Velocibox is one heck of a challenging game, but at the same time, it does happen to be a lot of fun and it just so happens that I've been quite a fan of this game ever since its days as a small demo. It's really cool and its like a blend between the impossible game and race the sun and its in awesome 3D. I only knew about the game because of my favorite YouTuber Markiplier who did a video of the game back when it was just a little demo and I had been a fan of the game ever since then. I guess you could say I'm a pretty big fan of the game and it closely resembles an endless runner game to an extent and it looks a lot like what Race the Sun looked like only a lot more intense. I was already a huge fan of Race the Sun so I figured that this might not be too different and that I would like the full version when it came out.

Of course I did like the demo, but that was only about 15 percent of what the full game was like so after watching marks video I knew that the developers of this game had a lot in store for us. I love a good challenging game and that's just what this game is about, when I first saw it, and all the way up until now I think of games such as the Impossible Game and Geometry Dash. The game is fast paced and very energetic, which is something that I really like in a game, but maybe not something that mark liked because if I'm not mistaken, it took him dozens of tries just to get passed the 2nd level and many more to beat the demo.

When the game first came out for Steam and was out of the demo, I hadn't actually known about it for a few months after and I scrambled to try to get a copy of it. Once I was able to get a copy of the game, I was so happy to find out that I had more fun with the full game than watching the demo and that's saying a lot.

GRAPHICS 9/10

For an indie game, Velocibox has some of the best graphics that you can ask for. As a matter of fact, I would say that the developers took the 3d of this game to a whole new level. The way that everything comes up towards you as you guide your little box through the map looks like you're playing with the Oculus Rift even though you're not. Mark did mention that the game would look terrifying in OR, and I don't know if the game is capable with it but I think it has potential to look really cool, and yes, terrifying as well. Everything in the game is clean and simple and all has some sort of a futuristic look to it which makes it look really cool.

The game does start off quite bland and begins as a combination of black and white, or maybe just a very dark blue, but as you play the game, it gets more colorful and way more intense because EVERYTHING changes. There are no small changes when it comes to the graphics, each level comes and blows you away with its drastic change in both colors and animations. The 2nd level changes the obstacles from blackish to redish which is cool and then once the 3rd level comes up, the walls quickly change, the obstacles are different, and even the box that you are controlling is completely different.

As you play the game, the animations change as well. When you start you just have plain obstacles but as you play, you begin to get all sorts of different moving obstacles, and you even get paths that change and all different sorts of movements. All of these different pieces come together to make something electric that's really fun to look at and can also be quite challenging if you can't really react to all the different changed and movements. I personally really like the way the game looks and for that my grade for this aspect is going to be a 9 out of 7.

SOUND 9/10

In my opinion, the sound for Velocibox is really well done and it offers a unique and energetic spin to whoever plays it. I'm talking about both the sounds and the music, both of which make the game a lot more fun than if you were just playing the game without listening to anything because it does a great job at pumping you up and getting you ready to die in the game. First off you have the normal sounds which like the graphics give the game some sort of a futuristic feel to it. Whenever you collect one of the little objects scattered around the game you get a cool sound effect and you also get a little something when you crash into one of the walls or whatever. Then of course, you can't forget the lovely voice that repeats "Level One" over and over, and if you're lucky, someday you might actually hear "Level Two".

Those effects are all pretty cool to hear but I would have to say that the best part of the sound aspect is the music. This also gives off a futuristic feel and as you play it makes you feel energized. Of course, if you aren't good you wont be able to hear the full song because you would be dying ever couple of seconds, but as a whole, the music is very good and is the kind of music that you would hear by itself when you aren't playing the game. The music was composed by Laszlo "Vincenzo" Vincze and I feel that a great deal of effort had been put into this work. Laszlo has worked on the sound for a few big games such as the Crysis series, so it's kind of something that you would expect. Overall, the music was outstanding and the sound aspect is a huge part in why the game is so much fun and for a grade, this aspect is going to get a 9 out of 10.

ADDICTIVENESS 9/10

Why else wouldn't this game be addicting? Well aside for the fact that it can cause massive amounts of stress after just playing the tutorial? This game is a lot of fun and had so much potential for such a small game. Once you get past the difficulty, the game has an amazingly addictive nature that could allow you to play many many rounds in one sitting, and because of the difficult, it pretty much guarantees that you can get a couple of hours or so out of the game, if you can even beat the game at all that is. This is really one of those games that's addictive because of how challenging it is, kind of like how games such as Flappy Bird and Super Hexagon are addictive because of this. In the video, mark even said this game was like a blend between Super Hexagon and Temple Run, and that's really exactly what it is.

The game is so much fun that if you took out its challenging nature, which many people like, I would still be able to hook many players and be a lot of fun. The game would be more like Race the Sun and it would still be addicting, but by having such a high level of difficulty, it allows for the game to in a way offer more of a reason to play it and a huge incentive to actually beat it because who wants to be beaten by a game? This is a very unique game that offers a different experience each time you play, though with most of those experiences ending with death and overall the game can be as addicting as any other mainstream game if not more. For that, my grade for this aspect is going to be a 9 out of 10.

STORY N/A

There isn't really much of a major story since your only goal is to stay alive and beat the game. Unlike some other games that are like this, there aren't any coins or points that you need to pick up, powerups or even distance to mark how far you travelled aside for just levels. There's only one thing in the game that could even resemble a mission. The only thing you need to do is not die which is very hard for a variety of games, one of which is the fact that the game is always trying to kill you, on purpose. The other would be how many levels there are, because there's enough to make sure that you don't win, at least not for a while. There are 27 levels, with each one being different and randomly generated each time, yet it took mark dozens of tries just to beat the demo of 3 levels, so if you ask me, staying alive sounds like a pretty good goal.

There is one thing you should know that relates to completing the game because if you try to go as far as you can without hitting anything, then you will never complete a level. You don't beat a level by going to a certain distance, you beat it by collecting little objects lying around each level. This is what resembles the missions that I mentioned earlier because collecting these is the only way you can beat a level and once you collect enough of them you move onto the next level with no break in between. Through the use of these missions you could say that there's a bit of a story because of what you're doing, but there isn't enough for some sort of a plot so this category will be left without a grade.

DEPTH 9/10

The game has a fairly decent amount of depth and in my opinion, having the difficulty at such a high level adds even more to the depth, which usually isn't always the case. As I had mentioned earlier, there's no currency or stats, so there really isn't that much depth in aspects other than the amount of levels that there are, but when you think about the number of levels, you might not even believe that there would be so many. I would say that the amount of levels offers a good amount of depth for two reasons. The first would be the sheer number of levels which stands at 27. This number of levels might seem like a very small amount considering that most levels should be completed in under 30 seconds, but on its own, having that many levels in a game is a good sign.

The other reason would be the difficulty. Just because these levels can be completed in under 30 seconds doesn't mean that everybody will actually do that. Unless you have already played this game for many hours or are already good at similar games and can learn quickly, some of the later levels will be unobtainable for a while. Heck, I didn't even make it past level 6 until after I have played the game well over 100 times and I'm sure it will take me another thousand or so tries to beat the entire game. There's 27 quick levels but you more than likely will have to play each level plenty of times meaning that this short game could take many many hours to complete, and that's all you need for depth. If you have the courage to complete the game that is. Those points blend together nicely to offer a good amount of depth and for that, my grade for this aspect is going to be a 9 out of 10.

DIFFICULTY 10

Let me make this clear. This game is going to lead to a lot of rage. Just look at what had happened to Mark after beating just 3 levels, he was reduced to a smoldering wreck. If you are good at games, throw all of that out the window because this game doesn't go by normal rules or even logic and if the game gets the chance to kill you and shatter all your gaming dreams, it's not going to hesitate. I'm not sure if the developers made this with the intention of you punching your computer screen, but I'm pretty sure your computer is going to be broken long before you beat the game, or even before level 10. That's how hard this game is. Most of the games I played that I said where extremely hard were all mobile games, but this is honestly one of the hardest PC games that I have ever played. It's right up there with VVVVVV and Super Hexagon for one of the hardest PC games ever.

So what do you have to do to make sure the game doesn't make you look like a fool? Well first you have to make sure you have good eyes. It sounds silly but it's true, you need to make sure that you see every inch of the map at all times and that you know what you have to do when the time comes. For instance, if you need to jump, you need to make sure you have a clear path up on the roof and then comes the hardest part. When you jump, its like a mirror, right becomes left and vice versa so you always need to think 3 or 4 steps at a time. To make matters worse, that only works during each level. You can't go through a level and expect to memorize it and try to do the exact same thing over again because each time, the level will be randomized so you're going to think ahead differently each and every time. Thats really the only thing you need to do. It might sound simple, and you're still going to die hundreds of times but it will make a world of difference. So pretty much it's one of the hardest PC games you can play and for a grade, difficulty gets a 10.

OVERALL 9.3/10

Even though this is one hard game, there's nothing saying that you shouldn't play it. Just because you can't get past the 1st level doesn't mean that it's impossible and that you should give up. The game isn't fully impossible, its just going to need many many tries to beat it. Maybe you aren't the kind of person who wants to beat the game, and are just the kind of gamer who wants to get as far as you can and then keep trying to beat your high score. That's kind of what happened with Flappy Bird, so there's no reason to believe that this theory can't work here. If you are the kind of person who wants to beat it but play many hours with no progress, and you spend those hours screaming then maybe its best to put the game away, but hey, you would have wasted away hours playing a game at least, regardless of whether you beat it or not.

This game is worth a try though. It isn't free, but you will get a good amount of playtime out of it whether you win or don't make it past the 1st level and even if you fail miserably over and over, you'll at least have some kind of fun along the way. Heck, I barely made it through one third of the entire game but I still had a blast and I loved competing against myself trying to get further ahead each round. If you like a game where you he to challenge yourself then this is the kind of game that would fit you, and if you like games where you get to scream at the top of your lungs, then again, this is the game for you. Overall, Velocibox was really one great game and I had a blast playing it and I'm sure you will too if you give it a chance. My overall grade for this game is going to be a 9.3 out of 10.

zanderlex : I am downright terrible at this game.  I tried for like 10 minutes or so to get my feet off the ground, but I made barely any progress.  Even Super Hexagon's learning curve didn't seem so steep.  Perhaps I should try playing with keyboard instead of controller.  I frankly stink at this game.  But I love it.  I can tell it's a good game, even if I'm not good at it.  Those with sharper reflexes than me will probably be able to enjoy it more.  And maybe one day, when I'm so much better at twitch gaming (which I'm not accustomed to), I'll come back to this game, and say "This is a great game".
