The Scribblenauts series is a beloved one to many.  Want to make a flying sheep?  Type it in the notebook, and you’ve got it.  Want to blow stuff up with a bazooka?  Type it in the notebook.  Want to make a pink zombie shark?  Well...you get the picture.

Each entry has expanded on the progress made in the last.  Scribblenauts featured only objects.  Super Scribblenauts allowed adjectives to be used, in a limited way.  Scribblenauts Unlimited did away with much of the limits.  It not only allowed you to make multiple adjectives per item/person, etc., but allowed you to apply adjectives to the things that already existed.  It truly was a masterpiece of fun.

Finally, we have this.  Much of the innovation of the series has led up to this.  However, I am sad to say that this game’s innovation...is very limited.  More on that later.
______________________________________________________________________________
The game has a basic story: The hero Maxwell’s doppelganger is causing chaos throughout worlds in an attempt to gain starites.  Why does he want starites?  Who is he working for?  All these questions and more are answered...soon.

Sadly, it is too soon.  Only twelve worlds exist in the game, and each is significantly small, albeit bigger than most levels in Unlimited.  Each world has only one starite to find.  That’s it.  However, there are tasks to complete in each level.  This is where the innovation kicks in.

You start off with only three worlds unlocked.  Complete tasks in a certain level to gain reputation corresponding to one of three paths, each path’s levels unlocked using reputation.  These tasks are random, and there is a significant variety to keep you coming back for more.  However, this is Scribblenauts UNMASKED, so much (but not too much) of the variety requires a knowledge of the DC Universe.

Fortunately, that’s where the Batcomputer comes in.  It’s loaded with data on all the items and people of the DC Universe stored in the game.  You can search for a specific item, person or suit and use it from there.  However, the search feature is largely limited to word-specific searches.  You can’t type in a hint given by a person to find an item related to it.

There are also a number of suits that can be unlocked via Streetpass or with reputation.  These will give Maxwell the powers of a specific superhero.  They are all done well, and are a nifty shortcut to success often.

The backpack from Unlimited also returns.  This time, it’s called the “Utility Belt”.  You can store items, suits and even people there for later use.  If you no longer want something stored there, simply drag it to the trash can to make room for other items.

In addition, tasks can give further rep every so often.  This is accomplished through specific limitations imposed by Mister Mxyzptlk.  You can choose to accept them or not, but if you do, each task you complete will give twice the rep.  However, sometimes the limitations are much too limiting.  He might have you only build stuff starting with the letter G, but you need something starting with C to solve a task.  There is no way around this.  If you restart the level, the same task will not be there.  This is disappointing, to say the least.  When almost all of the game’s replayability centers around these tasks, having one broken mechanic relating to it can dampen the game a bit.  It is fortunate that the Mxyzptlk limitations are optional.

As for the graphics, they do the job.  The graphics of the Scribblenauts series have never been the most eye-popping or amazing out there.  It is difficult to make it so, considering the thousands upon thousands of options you can make or do.  The game has a simple, almost hand-drawn aesthetic.  It looks as if a child has drawn all the characters and items.  This works to sell the style of the game, but also may fail to impress most people.

The music isn’t much.  Once again, it works to sell the game, but is very basic and bland.  There are no stand-outs in the music track.  However, nothing in particular will jar your senses or irritate you.  It helps to keep the focus of the game on the gameplay.

Once you’ve completed the main game, there are six origin stories to go to.  These are simple, with simple solutions and short length.  They require rep to unlock.

Ultimately, the difficulty of this game depends largely on how good you are with words and DC.  I didn't find it very difficult most of the time, but younger people with little knowledge of Batman, Green Lantern, etc. will likely find this game very difficult at times.  Those that struggle with words will find this difficult, but rewarding; however, not quite to the same extent as
Scribblenauts Unlimited.

One last note: On one specific mission (The Fortress of Solitude), there is a glitch for the Starite mission: One solution that worked in the console/PC versions will not work here.  You’ll likely need to look up the fix on Youtube in order to pass the mission.

THE VERDICT:

A disappointment coming from Unlimited, but a good game nonetheless.  I recommend DC fans and hardcore Scribblenauts fans check this out; others should probably pass.  If you’re debating between picking this up and Unlimited, consider grabbing Unlimited first.

supernerd117 : I really don't know why you didn't apply for review writer.

This was a fabulous review, you judged it on the game overall as a whole, rather than taking certain part out of it and making a mess out of it!

Very well done : 9.5/10

realplayer109 : hehe, I did!  And I got the job!  Thank you for the compliment!  :-)  I'm doing my best.

It was mentioned to me by Eirinn that I didn't mention the difficulty in detail, so I added something near the bottom to address that.

Nice review supernerd! I've played the original Scribblenauts myself and I have Super Scribblenauts on my phone, together with Scribblenauts Remix and both are great! I liked your review and you were clear and straight to the point, although I found it hard to understand some things though as you constantly compared to Scribblenauts Unlimited, and I've never played that game. Still, good job
