Before I start this is the PlayStation port of Doom, my Saturn review can be found here. https://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=86985Overall: 9 When doom was released in 1993, it was fun and some people found it scary. When the PlayStation port can out, the game took a 180 from action pack, fun game play, to scary, hunted house. The game was not change in levels but some of the bigger levels where removed, due to console limitations, but its not all doom and gloom, there are levels that are only on the PlayStation and Saturn ports, which are still big and easy to get lost in them. All the fun you had on Doom on other systems is here, but more scary. But how dose this port stand to the others? Well lets find out. Graphics: 8 For the time Doom was good for frame rate but now, its very choppy Its not as bad as the Saturn, but it can be annoying from time to time. With that aside, its time for the good part. The look of the game is a lot darker and gloomy than Doom was and has the spooky feel to it. The game also as lighting effects with certain coloured rooms to give a different feel to the game. The monsters look a bit wired when they move and look like robots, but they look much better than they did.
Sound: 9 Give credit to Aubrey Hodges who work on the music. Its really scary and much better than it was. When I was young I had to put the light on as some of the levels music scared the life out of me and freaked me out. There was a few levels that I was scared of as the music scared me so much. The weapons sound a lot better and double barrel shotgun sounds like a powerhouse and makes you feel like you are the best.
Addictiveness: 7 This port of Doom is very addictive. The frame rate can be annoying at times, but an old saying little bit of dirt never hurt anyone. My point is that it's a little problem. This will not stop the game in any form in anyway. The replay value on a different setting is high. So if you beat the game on I am a wimp (easy) to ultra violence (hard) its worth it. Story: 6 The story has taken a more action packed story.
You area solder, one of Earth's toughest: hardened in combat and trained for action. Three years ago you assaulted a superior officer for ordering to shoot upon civilian's. While he was sent to Pearl Harbor, you where sent to Mars. The U.A.C (Union Aerospace Corporation) has made a mute-planetary portal between Mars 2 moons, Phobos and Deimos. The gateway opens a portal to hell and the moons and Mars become battlegrounds and Deimos as disappeared from space. You and your buddies are sent to the Hanger on Phobos and you are put on watch and you here you buddies get killed.
Its up to you to save Mars, Earth and become the only hope for humankind.
Doom 1 & 2 are put into one story.
Depth: 6 The levels are watered down from the PC and many of the secret levels have been removed. With 59 levels to play there is a lot to do and a lot to kill. If you play on easy, the game can't be beaten in one sitting, unless you do a run game where you just go to the exit. On hard, unless your a pro it will take a few days to beat.
Difficulty: 7 This game is not a walk in the park. If you go in guns blazing you will die. The first few level are running and gunning but in other levels if you do that, you will be into a corner and killed in a few seconds. One level is hard has you only got one shot and beating the level, Why? You open a door and there about 7 platforms and the exit door. When you stand on the first platform it starts going down and you need to run. With the PS1 D pad, not easy. On Hard mode The monsters in Doom 2 are in Doom 1 and my nightmare the Arch Vile is gone, YAY!!.
Now Doom was on every system you could get, some it was good, others bad. I would say Get this port if you can or the PC 2nd.
