I remember getting this game. I had just finished with breakout, and I figured that this would be something like it. I was wrong! This game is so much longer than breakout! Oh my word, is it long! So long, that I do not believe that I have yet completed it! There are so many different types of challenges in this game. Soccer, fishing, hockey, tilt-n-tumble, sheep herding, egg collecting, maneuvering the ball on a maze like raft, even pinball can be found in here! The graphics are pretty good, but I cannot tell you how many times I've failed because of a goofy glitch with the paddle. But let's dive in and take a look at this game.
Graphics: 8
I give the graphics an because while it's pretty good for its system, there is one glitch that happens now and again where the ball goes through your paddle. Not fun at all! The graphics are blocky, by today's standards, but pretty good for its own time and decent on its system. The graphics are so creative and varied throughout this game, that it is virtually impossible for me to give the graphics a low rating. You will see probably more variety in this game than you will see in even a lot of today's games. The only game that I can think of having this much variety right now is super Mario galaxy. But that's about it. I'm no professional critic, but I am sure that has to be worth something for the games graphic department, right?
Sound: 9
The sound is very good in this game, with different tunes and sounds for every area in the game. The sounds are about as varied as the graphics and levels themselves are. The sounds are all of pretty good quality, and I am so happy that they did not just use the same tune for every level. I was really impressed with the sound here. I would not say the soundtracks are super cool or anything like that, but they are all good and fit the levels and environments quite nicely. Every animal that you will come across in this game sounds the way I feel it should. The sounds are clear and not glitchy...what else can I say? The sound guy gets a 9!
Addictiveness: 6
If you are not deterred by the game's difficulty, this game is very addicting and could get a 9. However, even I was constantly frustrated with this game. The first challenge in each world was tough enough on it's own but everything after that kept getting harder and harder. It gives the game a feeling of impossible almost, but I know it's not. It does have enough to keep you busy and has a lot of challenges and ideas that are just fun. And if anything, the graphics and sound are always pretty appealing to me. For the ps that is.
Story: .....
Sadly, this game does not have a story, your goal is just to finish the challenges and get to the end. There really is no reason to fight this game tooth and nail. They really should have put some sort of story in here. It might have spurred me on to finish, if I had something to accomplish. But sadly, I didn't.
Depth: 10
For the play station, this game is extremely long. I cannot remember how many different worlds this game had, but if I had to guess, I would say close to twenty. That's a lot of worlds, that is a ton of challenges. And with so much variety in each one, it makes the game that much deeper. I think there really is no way that they could make the game play itself deeper. but the game might have been deeper if there was a story. It really could have added something to the game. But the game play (which is what I am rating) is impossible to make any bigger in my opinion.
Difficulty: 9
If there was a 9.9 in the list of choices, I would have so put that down. This game is extremely tough and practically unforgiving. The first levels are not so atrocious (but even these are tough), but then they keep making every level after that trickier by adding extra things into it. For instance, one of the levels is a fun house area. You have to move the paddle to tilt the platform and get the colored balls in the right slot. It's tricky enough when you are doing it one at a time. But then they start giving you. More colors to deal with. Then you start getting more balls at the same time to deal with. After a couple levels, it gets to the point of being a horrific challenge. It's still not impossible, but close enough to it in my opinion. I would really say that this game goes over the edge of impossible at times, but then falls back into the doable area. It can be fun, unless you do not have a memory card, and you take all day trying to get somewhere, and your mom calls you down in the middle of a heated hockey battle (and she could never understand why I couldn't just pause it. I mean, really!) Anyways, it probably will not be as frustrating with a memory card, because you can shut it off, take a break and go back to it. But unfortunately, I did not own a memory card for the Ps1, and by the time i finally got one, I never really felt like playing pong!
Overall: 8.5
This game really has a lot to offer, even if did not have the greatest of experiences with this game, there is just so much to it. There is a four player multiplayer mode, so I'm guessing that this would be a great game to play with friends. There is so many different kinds of puzzles in this game, they are sure to keep you entertained for a while, and the graphics and sound are sure to keep you going because you want to see what the next level feels like. The challenges never end, and there's always something you can do here. So I still think that it is a great game, even if it was not my top favorite.
