Sonic Battle (GBA): ReviewBy: VizzedGuy111A Sonic fighting game that combined both elements of Super Smash Bros. and a beat em up game. Hm, interesting... Anyway I'm VizzedGuy111 and I'm going to review Sonic Battle for the Gameboy Advance. This game was released in 2003 and was published by Sega and THQ and it is the second fighting game of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The first fighting game was Sonic the Fighters, and it plays more like a fighting game in the other hand Sonic Battle is different.
- Different Fighting Mechanic
- Different Characters
- Different Story (In which I don't want to spoil the story to you.)
- Minigames
- Better Multiplayer Mechanic
- and more
Anyway like nearly always, this review will be consisted of 6 main topics, Graphics, Sound, Addictiveness, Story, Depth, and finally difficulty to support the overall. The overall will determine if the game is good or not. However, it is
my overall so don't fight over with comments like, "Oh, this game is bad." or " I think Sonic the Fighters is better!" I'm okay with those comments but please don't spam or have a quarrel. So, anyway let's battle to the review!
Graphics 6/10The graphics are okay, I guess? Anyway, let's talk about the sprites first. The sprites aren't too bad. You have the character sprites and they are quite detailed. You also have full character sprite's (you know from the story and the intro) and they are also quite detailed but a little different from the original sprites from Sonic Adventure.
Now, the landscape. The landscape isn't too bad. In my opinion, I think the landscape took some time to create and I think that's okay. First of all there is the story landscape, in which there are buildings, grasses, sand, roads, and more. There is also the battling landscape in which you get to see while battling opponents. You get to see them in a isometric perspective and I find it interesting for being it in a GBA. The landscape is a bit different because it's a little detailed than the story landscape. You have the ground and the rising of the landscape in which you could probably use them to your advantage.
Finally, let's talk about the animation. The animation is smooth and actually quite quick. The reason why it is quite quick is because of the battle gameplay. The gameplay is quite quick, like punches, walking, and things like that.
So, I give it a 6/10 rating.
Sound 7/10
The sound is actually quite good! Although it feels like a Sega Genesis or a Sega Mega Drive, it does at least have voice acting and that's kind of interesting and you would be kind of motivated. Also, the sound effects while battling opponents are quite good too. You have punching and kicking sounds, plus guarding effects and etc.
The music is quite addicting to hear. You have the story hub and you have Emerald Beach and they're pretty catchy for being on the GBA. However, sometimes you hear them most of the time and it can get quite annoying but at least it won't change my rating.
So I give the sound a 7/10 rating!
Addictiveness 8/10
I have to admit, I have to give the rating a good rating and here's why. The battling mechanic of Sonic Battle is quite interesting because it is different from most fighting games. Meaning that you could play it lots of times. Also, there is multiplayer so that you can play with people who has a GBA. I could explain more about the addictiveness, but I'll save it for the depth anyway.
Story 7/10
The story is quite interesting for a Sonic game. Although most Sonic games are like this- Dr. Robotnik or Dr. Eggman is going to take over the world while using the chaos emeralds so who's going to save the world? Sonic the Hedgehog! However this story is quite different so I'm going to tell the introduction of the story.
On the start of the story, Dr. Eggman sees a Gizoid (A Old Robot) who stole a chaos emerald, but Dr.Eggman uses it's data to create a robot that does what he says, so he throws the Gizoid in Emerald Beach. Soon, Sonic saw the Gizoid while he's being bored and the Gizoid suddenly moved. Unfortunately, the Gizoid but Sonic goes to Tail's to help the Gizoid. However, Sonic sees Shadow before he goes to Tail's so he defeated him and sees Tails.
Anyway I don't want to spoil the whole game so if you wan't to find out, play the game! So I give the story a 7/10.
Depth 7/10
Now let's talk about the depth. Some of the things for the depth section will be used for the addictiveness section okay. You basically have story mode, in which you experience the story of the game and get to play the fighting experience on the game. You also have battle mode in which you can battle with additional 3 players with computers or people who owns a GBA console. You have challenge mode in which you face challenges with the character you choose. You can train in order to hone your skills. Finally, you can try mini games if you don't wan't to battle. Anyway in the story mode, you can get battle points. Those battle points can be used in order to power up Emerl, the Gizoid. That way you can give him character skills.
So I give the depth a 7/10 rating.
Difficulty 8/10
*sigh* The difficulty. The difficulty is quite hard for a fighting game. So, the game starts easy, right? So, the game can get harder as you progress. Well not really. Sometimes, the game will put you to unfair fight like 1v2 or 1v3 and the game even puts you to a fair fight but the opponents can be hard! Also, sometimes there are fights that you have to face the same opponent(s) twice and it can be quite tedious. Sometimes, after that, the game is just quite easy.
So I give it a 8/10.
Overall 7.3/10I give the overall a 7.3/10 rating. This game is quite good for the GBA and you should probably too. Anyway if you haven't play the game, go play it!
