Here is a review by The IB, This time; it’s on the 2nd game in the Oddworld series called “Abe’s Exoddus”. Abe’s Exoddus was released for the PlayStation 1 in November 1998; this game as well with the last game was created by the independent gaming company known as “Oddworld Inhabitants” This game, you play as Abe who just saved 99 Mudokons from Rupture Farms, until you realize that that was just the beginning, your quest it to save an additional 300 Mudokons (3 time as many than last time) and you have to avoid the same enemies with a lot more added into this game. And like last time, the storyline can be affected depending on how many Mudokons you save, if you save a lot, you get a good ending or if you don’t save hardly any, then you get a bad ending, but like what’s said, best to keep it good. This is as epic as the last game, why it’s so epic, I will say in this review.

Graphics..

I think with the graphics in this game, nothing really a whole lot has changed from Oddysee, but with the new land, I think the graphics look quite different. The way the mines look at the beginning in the game, but the desert land of Necrum with the Mudanchee and Mudomo Vaults, they make it really look, well, interesting, and I like the more industrial areas of FeeCo, Slig Barracks, Bonewerkz, and the Brewery, those environments looks really outstanding, I think they all look picture perfect, even on the PlayStation 1, so I think they quite nailed with that. As being a really big platformer guy, I look at on how great the graphics look and I think the graphics in this game looks so unique in their own way. For the sprites, they all haven’t changed, so I won’t say a whole lot, but to the new characters added into this game, I still got to say that the sprites still look quite amazing like last time. So, for the graphics, they brought the graphics from the first game and built a new environment into it.

So, for the graphics in this game, I will give it a 9 out of 10, I think on a personal standpoint, even know that the graphics hasn’t much changed over the course of a year, I still think the graphics in this game is still an interesting piece of the PlayStation 1’s history, and this is what really got me interested into this game (well, this and the storyline)

----------

Sound/Music..

I think we have seen quite an upgrade in both the music and the sound effect department in this game, let’s first start with the sound effects. I like the sounds in these games, they have upgraded the sounds that the environment makes, like in the last game, we had a few of them, and I think they added a whole lot more including a lot of background noises that can quite confuse you, although it’s so quietly, it goes unnoticed, but it’s not about the background noises, but a lot of other items got a lot more clearer noises, and with more things, that means more noises. I also think with Game Speak getting a major update, this has also affected the sound effects as well, like giving everyone a lot more voices to they all can communicate with each other, so that can be a lot more helpful.

As for the music, in the Oddysee review, I did mention a couple flaws that the music had in that game, but I don’t really see any issues in the music in this game, I think the music seem a little more better, but that might be my opinion though. I think I really like the music in the Mines, for some reason, it sounds quite, well, interesting. And it’s weird that my most favorite tune is at the very beginning of the game, but there are a few locations I do like the music, like the FeeCo Depot, Slig Barracks, and the SoulStorm Brewery. So, all and all, I think the music in this game is a little bit of an improvement to this game than on Oddysee, although it is different locations, so that may have a factor on the different music, maybe my favorites are on this game.

For the Sound and the Music, I will give it a perfect 10 out of 10, the reason it got it’s 10, well, I think with the upgrade from Oddysee, I see that both the music and the sound effects in both games are quite an improvement, so hey, that’s goes to know, that if a mistake is made, Oddworld Inhabitants see it and they make their new game a lot more interesting updates, and remember, in the late 1990’s we had no such thing as games being updated for bug fixes, we have to play on what we got. But hey, I like the music and the sound effects, that’s why it’s got a 10 out of 10

--------------------

Addiction Level..

I think with the amount of Addiction this game offers, well, let’s see. This game happen to be part of my 4th most favorite series, and on how much stuff is in this game, this game can be quite addicting. I think what got me into this game, I seen all the cool and interesting things you can do in this game, and I think with the graphics and the sound and music, they somehow also quite entertain me, because I am quite interested into those things in this game, and the gameplay also wants me to keep playing this game. I think with the added content into this game which I think built up the addiction level in this game and it will make you play this game over and over, despite that once you complete the game, it stops right there and you have to reset the system, that’s the only flaw I have though, if it goes back to the main menu, it wouldn’t be much of a problem, but personally, this is no big deal, because I can just reset it. But all and all, it’s quite addicting though and I think you’ll be addicted to this game as well.

For the Addiction Level in this game, I got to give it a perfect 10 out of 10, I think with the amount of stuff you can do and with the interesting contents in this game, this game alone can bring a lot of gamers to play this game, at least to me, I got hooked into this game because it just contains a whole lot of interesting stuff. So, that’s why the Addiction Level gets a big score.

--------------------

The Storyline..

The Storyline in Abe’s Exoddus, it all starts where the main protagonist known as Abe has just completed his quest of shutting down Rupture Farms and saving 99 Mukokons and his quest was all over, but that was only just the beginning, what Abe didn’t realized after he was knocked out, 3 spiritual Mudokons (known as the 3 Weirdos) showed up and told Abe that that they are in trouble that the Glukkons are back once again and digging up all the ancient Mudokon bones for them (the Glukkons) to make a brand new beverage known and SoulStorm Brew. After Abe regained consciousness, he as well some of his Mudokon friends does out and walk across the Necrumian desert in search of the ancient mine, but after walking all day, the Mudokons starting to give up hope until the gang spotted a train racing on by and seen on where that train was heading and what they found, it was the mineshaft that the gang was looking for. After entering (of corse that Abe slipped and fell down, but after climbing back up, his friends discovered the new drink (SoulStorm) and drink it despite Abe’s warning, but then the guys got sick and Abe made a terrible discovery that the bones that were dug up was made for the beverage. Trying to figure out on what to do, he keeps going through the mine (and soon blow it up), he realize that needs to go through both the Mudanchee and Mudomo Vaults and get those two Vaults taken care of and after that, Abe goes to the Weirdoes and told them that the bones are used for making the brew and the Weirdoes want Abe to do the same thing to the brewery like he did to Rupture Farms, by destroying it. So, after that, he travels to FeeCo (which is a train station) and travel to two places and shut them both down (Bonewerkz and Slig Barracks) and then shut the train station down as well, and then soon, shut the brewery down as well by turning the vault off. Depending on how many Mudokons you save (let’s go with at least 150+ of 300), at the ending, The Brewmaster (because Glukkons don’t have arms), he can’t turn the vault and thus, the brewery blows up, and your adventure is once and for all, completed (Well, after a news interruption of Abe now destroyed the brewery, blah blah blah).

For the storyline, I have to give it a perfect 10 out of 10. I think the story is quite amazing, and to my opinion, I think Exoddus has a whole lot more storyline than Oddysee had, but it might just be my opinion though. I think combining the Oddysee’s storyline and this storyline, I think we got one amazing storyline over the course of two games.

--------------------

Depth..

I think what makes this game different from Oddysee, this game to my opinion has a whole lot more stuff in it, like if you look at it, you have a lot more items to gain, a lot more hazards, a lot more enemies, and a whole lot more levels. Plus not just that, but you have to save another 300 Mudokons, which makes a grand total of Mudokons save is 399 Mudokons over the course of 2 games. Also, the storyline (like the last game) also can be quite affected depending on the amount of Mudokons you save, like if you save more than 150, then you’ll have a good ending, but if you save less than 150, then you’ll get a bad ending. I also think that Oddworld Inhabitants has improved this game a whole lot more than in the last game like the Quick save (which I’ll go into detail more below in the Difficulty / Gameplay), plus a lot more improvement to the Game Speak, so that way, you can talk to multiple Mudokons at the same time, which is quite a time saver, because it can be quite time consuming when you have to move them around one at a time, and that is the only disadvantage I had with it, but I don’t think it’s that bad. Also, like in Oddysee, the layout in this game is also unique in their own way because they all can affect the pathway to the end. But for all of that, I think this game in a personal standpoint, it has a lot and to my point of view, I think Exoddus has a tiny bit more stuff than Oddysee has have, maybe Oddworld Inhabitants seen the few mistakes they made in Oddysee, and wanted to make some of those improvements in Exoddus, and I think it’s a nice move on their behave.

For the Depth in this game, I have to give this game a perfect 10 out of 10, I think with the amount of content in this game, it have a whole lot, and with 8 different locations with a lot of stages in each of them (Both the Mines and the Soulstorm Brewery has a bunch of stages, I mean a bunch). And all the updates we seen, that’s mostly on why I gave this game a “10”.

--------------------

Difficulty / Gameplay..

Although with the difficulty hasn’t really much changed from Oddysee, but I think it’s a little easier than the past game, although that is just my point of view though. Even with the slightly easier difficulty, it still can be tough at times and with the introduction of new enemies and having returning enemies from Oddysee, that might have jumped the difficulty a little higher, but I personally don’t think this isn’t really much of an issue, I think both games provide a good amount of difficulty, and I think if the game has a right amount of difficulty, I think it will make for a pretty good game, that’s why I think to my point of view on why this game is a great game to my point of view, it’s not too easy or too hard, and that’s what gamers go for, a challenging game, but not too hard that it’s impossible to beat because people don’t like playing impossible games. So that’s why I like these kinds of games.

As for the Gameplay itself, I think it has nearly the same controls as from Oddysee, but with a lot more interesting updates. The one update I have to talk about is the Quick Save, this feature is quite a lifesaver, it replaced the checkpoints in Oddysee, and you can like create your own checkpoint, like mostly if you normally stand to think if what you’re about to do is a good idea or not, you can Quick Save it, and you have nothing to worry about, when you Quick Save, you can go back to that same spot at that same moment when you saved, so when you die, you go to that same spot. So I think this is a lifesaving feature that Oddoworld Inhabitants has invented. Plus also the Game Speak has also seen quite an upgrade as well, like instead of having two characters to control, you can now have a total of 5 to control (Abe (of course), Slig, Glukkon, Scrabs, and Paramites), so yeah, between Oddysee and Exoddus, we have seen quite an improvement.

For the Difficulty and the Gameplay, I will give it an 8 out of 10, even know this is the same score I gave Oddysee, but I still think this game right here has done a lot more as of improvements with the Game Speak and the Quick Save feature and the difficulty is slightly easier than Oddysee. And that’s what I like about the game.

--------------------

Overall..

Overall, I got to say with Abe’s Exoddus, this is an amazing game in the series, this game as with Oddysee, they both brought an interesting new element in the gaming world, at least to my point of view, and both games end up making Oddworld my 4th favorite game series in video games to my point of view. I think with the graphics in this game is at least enough to make it say so, I think with this game (and Oddysee), the graphics in this game are quite amazing, and it’s that amazing, I think I would also give it an 11 if I can, but it can only go up to 10, so that’s fair enough. As for the sound effects, sure, the sound effects hasn’t really much changed (other than the voice difference), although the updated Game Speak to go from 2 to 5 different characters, so, I think the sound effects have a little bit more improvements. As for the music, the music has got a great update as well, I think to my opinion, I think the music in this game is a little better than the music in Oddysee, but that’s my point of view though. As for the Addiction Level and Depth, they both offer the player a lot of interesting features in the game, with more items added in and a lot more locations and stages, I think people are more glued to this game more than Oddysee (but it might be the other way around, but it’s my opinion though). The difficulty and the gameplay isn’t so bad either, I think if your used to the game and/or you played Oddysee, I don’t think you will have any problem, especially if you’re coming out from Oddysee and figuring out the new controls for the game, but the controls do run a little bit more smoothly though. But the thing that caught me more is the storyline, just like in Oddysee, Exoddus also provide an interesting storyline as well, Especially you coming from one game and merged into another game, it’s like a contentious storyline, you just saved 99 Mudokons and turn around, you got to save 300 more, and realize that Rupture Farms was a part of a bigger place known as SoulStorm Brewery. So, the story already sees a twist at the beginning of the game and I think this is what makes this game really unique in its own way.

For my final thoughts on the game, this game provides a lot of enjoyment and entertainment for you, and if you combine Oddysee and Exoddus, I think you will be in for a fun amount of time playing both games, although you dot to switch the game 1 times (1 for Oddysee and 2 for Exoddus (1st half and 2nd half of the game). I think you should try this game out.

For the final score, I will give this game a 9.5 out of 10, the reason I gave it this number, like in Oddysee, this game also have a lot of interesting material and it has so much stuff, they split the game in two disks, have the 1st half of the game in the 1st disk and the 2nd half of the game in the 2nd disk). When I played this on the PS1 and on the PlayStation Store on the PS3, this is quite a fun and entertaining game and I think you will like it.

Anyways, that’s it for this review.
