~Mini Introduction for Parents
and Little Gamers~
Hello Parents and Little Gamers!
When I made the decision to start playing Resident Evil for
the first time I was about ten years old and my brothers had rented it from
Hollywood Video and I briefly played it. At that time I found the game
terrifying and found myself unable to play it without having nightmares for a
week so firstly I must say that this game may not be appropriate for young
children who are sensitive to the horror genre. I am pointing this out
because of the very valuable and elusive sleep that comes with being a parent.
For the younger audience that may be reading this... be brave! It is a
good game. HOWEVER, sometimes courage comes with saying "No" to
something that might not be right for you. So if you get nightmares after
watching a horror movie or going to a haunted house you should probably just
skip this game for now and come back to it in a couple of years.
But! If you decide that your courage is best placed in a survival horror
game, GOOD LUCK TO YOU! Also thank
you for being the next generation of gamers!
You rock! Enjoy the game! :-D
Anyways, I wish everyone the best of luck with this game for all brave enough
to hit "New Game".
I hope everyone enjoys the review and the game!
~Review
Introduction~.
After playing the original Resident Evil game for a brief time and making the
decision to discontinue playing the game as a child, I ended up making the
decision to play the first game as an adult and ended up buying Resident Evil:
Director's Cut from the PlayStation Store a few years back.
I can be a bit jumpy myself so I still had a bit of a fright as I got used to
the pace of the game. So if you have never played a Survivor Horror Game
you can expect to jump and possibly screech as various monsters jump out of
every expected and unexpected corner.
Silly Tip 1:
Remember... if your significant other is sleeping while you are playing know
your escape route! I yelled in surprise a couple of times and my husband
came out like an angry grizzly bear... having a pre planned escape route just
might save your life... or you could try not to scream. Ha ha!
In comparison to other PlayStation games that I have played Resident Evil
Director's Cut is a fairly brief and easy game, even on its normal difficultly
level. If you know what you are doing the game can be beaten in a snap
but if this is your first play through and you are not using a walk through it
could take a quite a few hours. (I recommend only using walkthroughs when you
are simply stuck, have tried everything, and are ready to scream. Give
yourself a fair chance to solve the puzzles without help.) Now my comparison is
mostly RPG games like Final Fantasy 1-9, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Lagoon,
Wild Arms 1 & 2, and similar games that have many disks or a very lengthy
storyline.
In comparison to games like Final Fantasy 7 & 8, Resident Evil: Director's
Cut is quite short. This is especially true if you only play through one
character and do not do the plus game. I recommend playing through both
characters and then through the plus game just to see the unlock that you can
access the second time around.
~The
Game Controls~
If you are used to the smooth
controls from more recent games on the newer systems like Xbox 1, PlayStation
4, PlayStation 3, or Xbox 360 than the controls for Resident Evil: Director's
Cut may feel foreign to your fingers and you may find them to be fairly
frustration. This may be especially true if you are used to playing some
of the more recent Resident Evil games as the controls are, in my opinion, much
much much different than in Resident Evil: Director's Cut.
The front room of the mansion is safe, you will not be attacked there at any
point during the game so run around the entire room for a bit and get used to
the controls before you proceed in any other direction, including up the
stairs. Knowing your controls early in the game might save you time and
frustration!
~Storyline~
Without giving the game away I can
tell you that I personally loved the storyline and continued to love it into
Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil: Code
Veronica, Resident 5, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Resident 6. I will
continue to love the games through future games and even the movies and
books.
Resident Evil: Directors Cut has many different possible outcomes or
endings. The endings all depend on how you play the game. The
decisions you make can drastically affect the way your game turns out so be
careful and choose wisely. This repeats itself over into your
second character's ending as well. Both Jill and Chris both have their
own endings and the plus game allows for an additional level of play as well.
In addition, to getting some fun additions to your game the plus game allows
you the opportunity to explore these additional endings which for the
completionist soul is worth noting.
Overall the storyline is there but
it is not overwhelming so you do not have to worry about cut scenes every time
you turn a corner or open a door.
However, there is enough story in the various books and notes you find
to fill the void that you may feel if you are used to modern games with a bit
more scenes.
There is a lot of reading involved
in the game and if you really want to follow the storyline you should definitely
read all of the notes, journals, pictures, and the like that you come across in
game along with the character dialog. It
will open up a good story for you to follow into the rest of the game series,
the movie series, and the movies that are based on the games that have come out
as well. Additionally, there is a also a
Resident Evil book series you might choose to follow for additional storyline.
I hope everyone enjoys the storyline
as much as I have and that you end up hooked on the series.
“One
of us! One of us!”
~New Scenes and Voices~
The new addition of the voices into
the game and the opening scene also add to the story some but at first they
really just made me laugh and I personally felt that it took away from the
horror feel of the game for that reason.
I did like that it was a bit campy but the voices in the cut scenes are
choppy and do not flow very well.
I personally appreciate the efforts
that they put into the opening scene but the voices really just come off to me
as being quite silly sounding and not very realistic. I am not sure if that is because of the voice
actors that play Chris and Jill or just because of the technology level of the
game when it was originally made or a desire to match up the technology level
but it is not my favorite aspect of the game for certain.
However, I have the outlook that you
should take what you get and just go with it and enjoy the game. The game itself is really very good despite
the silly voices they added to the scenes.
~That
Horror Feel~
Overall the game is not that terrifying but I did
still jump and occasionally squeak (like the little girl I am when playing
survivor horror games) when the monsters suddenly pop out of the darkness and
quickly target you with the exclusive intent of destroying you. And
they are good at it. The Cerberus and
Hunters are great at this. They can be real
pains in the butt sometimes.
If that is not enough the entire game is very quiet
for the most part with eerie music to add that suspense. Most of the game is spent walking around
through the creepy atmosphere trying to find pieces of various puzzles that you
will need to utilize through the game to advance and eventually beat the
game.
Sometimes the puzzles themselves are terrifying to
complete, especially during that first play though when you have no idea what
to expect. You can be sitting there
trying to do a puzzle and then something terrifying happens and you never want
to go into that room again. Or when you
complete a puzzle something horrible might happen or there are just monsters in
the room with the puzzle and you are out of ammo because you decided not to run
past an enemy and are playing on a higher difficulty level.
I will not tell you how or where these things happen
or even if they happen exactly how I have stated but I can tell you that they can
be surprising and certainly adrenalizing.
Good luck.
Another aspect of the game that certainly adds to
the horror is the survival aspect of the game.
You really have to try and conserve your ammo and health items in this
game because if you do not do so you might find yourself stuck with only your
survival knife and monsters that do not go down easily without ammo straight through
their…everything. I did not notice a
difference in aiming up, down , or center…. Except that you probably should add
up if the enemy is up and down if the enemy is down or risk missing all
together.
Depending on the difficulty level you will have more or less ammo and healing
items spawn. So my advice is that when
you are able just ignore the enemies, duck into the next room, and do not get
hit. Be careful though, this tactic can
screw you later if you are not careful.
Too many enemies in an area can make running back and forth through the
mansion a bit of a pain.
~The
Game Overall~
Overall I really enjoyed Resident Evil: Director’s
Cut and as I mentioned earlier Resident Evil: Director’s Cut is the game that got
me hooked on the entire series of Resident Evil games. I simply cannot get enough of the series and I
of course recommend this game to anyone who likes a good story, puzzles, and a
challenge.
Resident Evil: Director’s Cut has a lot of really
interesting puzzles that does make you think about what you are doing and in
some cases not only adds to your game play but to the overarching storyline as
well. There are points in the game that
may cause you to jump, scream, and if you are like me you may need to keep the
lights on while you play.
The voice additions really where a bit of a downside
for me but I would say that it really did not take too much away from the game
play and was fairly easy to ignore. So
if you watch the campy opening scene from before starting a new game and think “What
the heck is this?” I really recommend giving it a fair shot. I hope you really end up enjoying the game
despite that factor and let yourself enjoy the rest of the game.
~Conclusion~
I really hope you guys enjoyed my ramblings about
the game and I hope you find the game itself to be as addictive and suspenseful
as I did during my first play through.
Hopefully I find the time to write some more reviews for games hosted on
Vizzed and I encourage everyone to put up their own reviews as well. It really could make a difference to whether
or not someone makes the decision to play a video game.
Thank you all again for reading the review!
