How do you prefer to keep track of recipes?

Digitally:  All recipes are stored via the cloud or on a storage device.
Printed:  All recipes are in books, or printed on paper and kept together through paper clips, binders, or boxes.
Hand-written:  All recipes are hand written by me or people I know.
In the mind:  Who needs to keep them stored anywhere? I'm so familiar with the recipes that I don't need to see them.

I feel a little conflicted about my own preference. I appreciate the convenience and space-saving attributes of digital storage.  Having them stored through technology also means that I can access them from anywhere.

However, much like my book preference, I prefer to have something physical in my hands.  I also like printed recipes because I can make notes on them if I want to adjust them, remember something that's not published on them, or rate them.

Hmm....I say digitally. So then when I am looking for something, that I previously looked at. I can find it saved somewhere. So then I can remember the picture with it. So I know what to cook or to bake. That is something I find easier to do, though I do have some books at home.its always been this way for me, as I do work on the Internet. So I get the recipes I want online. As you would say too, sometimes I like the use my books as well which I have got. But, I would mostly get my recipes from the Internet.

I store all of my recipes on the computer via a word document.
I have the Documented set up like a book with a table of contents and different categories for each item.
If I find a recipe that I like I add it to my collection.
I find that this method allows me to make changes to the recipes as needed and as I type them up I can have them all stick to the same format.
My hope is to one day print some copies out and give them to my friends. But I need to be satisfied with It first.

Eniitan :  I've been recently getting mine from the internet as well, though I still print them out and put them in a binder.  As for the picture thing... I actually take pictures of the process and post it in facebook so that I have visuals for what I did and what I used.  I don't know if you've seen them or not, but I like having that for my records as well.

Singelli : Yes I saw! You made me want to bake with those pictures! Please keep them coming! because....to me that encourages me to try and make those types, the next time I can bake.

I do a little of everything, to be honest, but I am more partial to handwritten recipes in a plain notebook or something like that. While I do get most of my recipes online, I usually won't bring my computer or phone in the kitchen with me (I'd probably drop it in the sink or something), so I just copy it down into a notebook first and then start actually making the food. And, well, call me old-fashioned, but I just really like the idea of a handwritten recipe book that I can maybe pass down to someone someday.

I write seriously every recipe down. Even if I get it from the internet and not from friends or family I'll copy it down because I would rather not be carrying around my phone/ laptop/ what have you while I'm cooking. Plus if I write it down I know I'll always have it and won't have to worry about losing a digital copy since I have a pretty bad streak when it comes to being careful with anything. Aside from that though I really do get most of my recipes from other people so it's usually wrote down anyway. There are a few I can just whip up from what I remember because I'd made them so much or they're so simple you can't forget but even those I have wrote down and stacked away somewhere just in case.

To be honest, unless I am making something for a group (say, buffalo chicken dip, or "chicken crack"), I store everything in my head. I just slow-cooked a healthy Italian pulled chicken dish, in which I made the sauce myself and then let the chicken simmer in it for several hours (prior to that, I boiled it for two hours so it practically fell off the bone). I actually prefer to create and tweak, and because I am so involved in the process that once I do it one time correctly (being the key word), I have practically mastered it and can recreate it on a moment's notice. I did the same thing with the fruit dreamscicle smoothie I made about an hour ago. Just took some ingredients I thought would go well together, tweaked as needed, and now I know exactly what I did to make it work. I can recreate the fajita marinade I made four months ago, too.

That's just me, though. I'm a trial-and-error type cooker. I think my involvement in the cooking process is what gets me to that point. When I make something like boxed mashed potatoes, I have to look at the ingredient list every time because it's not really a creation. But when I'm immersed in the process, tasting and adding as I go, it's easy to remember what I used to make it work. That being said, I should write some of my recipes down and share them with people.

pray75 :  oh my gosh... you're alive! And responding to MY thread!

And oh my gosh... you're amazing! I wish I could do that!

I was actually trying to decide how to create a thread (threads?) for recipe sharing, but I haven't come to a conclusion yet.  I also want to run more cooking competitions, but I'm worried about that not going well. The first time I did it, there was lots of GREAT participation, but my second genuine effort was poorly received.

That whole cooking the chicken and sauce is making me drool.... XD

rfjmoulton:  I accidentally ninja'd you earlier and didn't want to sandwich post, so I'm going to respond to you now.

I think the Word document idea is AWESOME!  It's so cool that you've given it a table of contents and everything.. wow! Do you really like cooking?

Most recipes that I have right now (for cookies, cakes, drinks and some savory dishes) have been passed down from my great grandmother and grandma and are the original copies that were written by them. They're stored in plastic sheets in binders separating them by dessert, diners, drinks, etc.

I kinda prefer keeping them stored that way, since it's a nice little connection to some of my relatives who are no longer here. It's comforting to pull out a cookie recipe that I made with my Grandma when I was really young and use the same paper now.

I prefer to keep my recipes digitally stored. It's way easier to access and it's uber-convenient.

However, i also have this giant red box of about 300 recipes i picked up from a church once. That's printed, but the recipes are amazing, and it's always a joy making dishes from it.
