For a hack to be recognized at all there needs to be a unique aspect (or aspects) with it. That aspect can constitute unique mechanics, unique stories, and even unique music will do. However, the amount of recognition an aspect gets it hacks depends. Total overhauls almost certainly will get your hack far, but other times only partial changes will suffice. This particular hack, however, is an exception to the latter. Despite a new playable character, a new story, and new stages, this hack was largely ignored. I mean, when was the last time you heard hacking forums rave with excitement about a hack called "Mega Man - Adventure of Bass 2"? I feel the lack of attention to this title wasn't exactly unwarranted, as it was hardly anything to call home about. Let's go deeper.

A new story? In a MEGA MAN HACK?!?!

Dr. Light (who has substituted eyebrow-waggling with blinking) has been defeated, his six greatest Robot Masters crushed and his castle pillaged. All of this was the work of Bass, the greatest creation of one Dr. Wily. However, Bass's decision to spare Light proved unwise, when the evil doctor steals the plans for eight of Dr. Wily's greatest Robot Masters and makes them his servants. Now, Bass must once again destroy Light's minions and defeat him, for the sake of his master.

What surprised me the most about this story is that...... it's
new? Sure, it's essentially Mega Man 2's story with Mega Man replaced with Bass and Light with Wily, but i still find it pretty cool to be playing a game as the coolest Mega Man character ever. At the end of the day, however, the lack of anything really new takes away from the score greatly.

Slightly above-average gameplay, but ultimately a great deal of missed potential.

Bass's abilities are limited to running, jumping and shooting/using items. That's it. Bass really controls exactly the same as Mega Man. There are so many things you can do with Bass that it feels like even more of a disappointment. He could have been given the ability to dash, rapid-fire, and directionally-fire, like he could in Mega Man & Bass. Instead, we are given what is essentially Mega Man if he skinned his foe and wore that suit. Don't get me wrong, these abilities alone are pretty fun in some cases, but you still feel disappointed throughout.

All of the levels have been redesigned, layout-wise. Being changed from the cakewalks that were the vanilla stages to something more challenging was done very well. You have more stages with more OHK spikes, larger bottomless pits, and generally more of (insert whatever obstacle/enemy you hated here). This hack manages to re-arrange the stages in a manner that they are difficult, but still rather enjoyable. For example, lengthy bottomless pits may be found frequently, but they are usually placed in just the right locations and are almost always exploited perfectly, with disappearing-reappearing blocks going over these pits serving as a nice challenge to anyone who doesn't feel like using item 2. Some stages even have unique obstacles, like false platforms in Light stage 4 (which are VERY heavily exploited). Regarding enemies, all of the vanilla foes have returned, but there's not much to say about them. They follow the same pattern as they did originally, but they are usually put in the perfect positions (which isn’t actually that hard). Now, the exception to well implemented gimmicks and challenges is Light stage 1. As soon as it starts off, you must use item 2 to get yourself across a lengthy pit, followed by immediately needing to pull out either item 1 or 3 to ascend about 20 million cliffs or high platforms. You'll be lucky if you have any energy for any item after that cesspool. Not only is that stage repetitive, but it gets unfairly difficult due to the armada of foes that are always trying to intercept your travel on an item. Should they hit, you'll likely fall into whatever obstacle you were trying to bypass and die. It's an ugly blemish on what is otherwise a nice aspect of the hack.

To accompany the stages are the bosses. They are exactly the same as vanilla. Same attacks, same patterns, same weakness chain, even the same boss room. It's terrible to know that there was so much potential for changed up bosses that simply went to waste here. Really, it's inexcusable.

To help you out with these challenges, you have your tradition weapon roster as well as the aid of E-tanks and extra lives. If you're unfamiliar with E-tanks, they basically fill up your entire health bar if you happen to get hit one too many times. You can carry a maximum of four, which is about as many as you'll need in this hack. The weapons act exactly the same as they did in vanilla. That means that about 75% of all the special weapons are utterly useless outside of boss battles. Those weapons that are useful you will find yourself using quite frequently, typically as a way to mow down droves of enemies but also just for fun, really. Those weapons have so much energy and power that it's impossible not to goof around with them every once in a while. In short, the weapons are interesting and pretty fun, but you'll only REALLY use a few.

A graphical overhaul to go with........a non-existent musical overhaul.

One of the major things this hack changed from vanilla were the graphics. Pretty much everything has been given a new texture, pallet, tone, whatever (i.E. Sprites, backgrounds (especially)). I guess the aim was to make the game look sleeker and/or cooler. In that regard, it IS pretty cool and sleek. The graphics overall have darker hues to them, look more fluid, and fit their stages better than vanilla. It's difficult to do that, but this hack pulled that off. I'd commend the hack in that regard piously, if it wasn't for the countless graphical bugs. Many bugs were carried over from vanilla, such as seeing a layer of trash for a split-second upon entering a stage, edges of sprites flicker, and weapon textures freaking out and not being rendered.  It's not too often you come across these bugs, but i can't let it slide. -1 point for those bugs.

The music is the same as vanilla. This is my greatest upset with the hack. Even some of the most primitive, least original hacks at least alter the existing track. Here, it's all the same. That's quite a lot of missed potential - there could have been some energy-driven tracks to match Bass's coolness. It's not all downhill, however. The vanilla soundtrack is rather exceptional, and it has some of the best tunes on the NES. It's good to hear them again, but it gets a little repetitive after a while.

Final Statement:

Mega Man - Adventures of Bass 2 is a hack with a lot of missed potential. A lot of work could have gone into the soundtrack, the bosses, and your character. However, there are some redeeming features, like the graphics and the stages. In the end, though, this is only a hack you should play if you're interested in playing Mega Man II as Bass, which i know many are.

Final Score: 7.3/10

Boxia : Nice job on that review I really liked it and it was a nice long review which adds points. You described the story very well and the game does seem pretty fun but does lack a sense of greatness in your words.
