Earthbound Zero. What comes to mind when you hear somebody speak of this game. Silly? Childish?? Parodying??? I think of a typical JRPG that tells of a regular twelve year old trying to make his way in a big world. But what exactly does this all mean??? So hey, I'm dopeydonald362 and welcome to the Mother/Earthbound Zero review.
Story
Now, one thing to take note of when playing this game is the deep story. It follows Ninten, a twelve year old who is growing up outside of a big town named Mother's Day/Podunk. Now, Ninten's house is mysteriously thrown into peril one evening, when lamps and dolls begin to attack the residents. Ninten heroically destroys all of these items and learns a curious melody from his sister, Mimmie's doll. Ninten discovers over the phone with his father that his great grandfather, George, studied PK, a strange psychic power that Ninten possessed. PK allows the user to perform a series of tasks, such as: Levitate objects, heal one's self, or warp away from danger. Ninten enters the basement, finding the key on his dog's collar, and obtains a map of the overworld. Travelling from home, Ninten encounters a several few enemies, such as his neighbour, Wally, hippies who try to con him, and rabid stray dogs. This is just chapter one, however, and the quest has just begun. The story deserves a rating of 7.
Sound
Mother's sounds are the best I've EVER heard from the NES. It combines a lot of different environments, such as shopping malls, zoos and cemetaries, and gives them plenty of unique songs that play, perfectly fitting each respective area. The sound deserves at LEAST 9.
Graphics
Now, when Nintendo began development on Mother, they were certainly going for an approach that would look much like the cartoon Peanuts, Ninten looking like Charlie Brown, and so on. The characters and enemies you will meet along the way are very uniquely drawn, with a few recycled sprites here and there, but overall, they're all pretty much different, giving the overworld a lot of variety. However, to be fair, the graphics do look like they were drawn by eight-year-olds. Sorry, Nintendo, but the graphics weren't too good this time. 5.
Difficulty In video games, to save the company from their downfall graphically, I always say gameplay over graphics. Mother holds no exception. The battles in this game are challenging enough, making for an exciting, thrilling and in some cases intense experience. This game can have some very difficult points, like the Cream Puff Zoo, the third dungeon of the game. This was rescued by an exceptionally easy boss fight, though. This game is pretty hard. 7.
Depth
So, the game is pretty long, if you include the grinding, all the melodies, and the final boss, not to mention the end credits. I'd give this game's depth about a 7.
Addictive
If you add up everything to do in the game, including all the items to buy and collect, the bosses to fight, the game is rather replayable, but sometimes you might just want to put it down for a while. This happens with all games, and therefore is completely understandable, but if you play this game a thousand times over, good for you! This game's finald rank is... 7! And the overall is..... 10 OUT OF 10!!!!! MOTHER 1 IS THE BEST NES GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED! I encourage you to pick it up and play it. Do yourself some good, will you????
