“You are imprisoned, Goat, for the crime of witchcraft. Now dwell here with the others for all eternity!”
Awakening to these words, you start off in a dungeon of six rooms, wherein you will learn the basics of gameplay and meet your friend, a magical mouse that can be called and recalled upon command. He will be the key to solving many a puzzle needed to be solved to escape from this dungeon.
The dungeon consists of 8 sub-dungeons, plus the tutorial sub-dungeon and a final sub-dungeon unlocked upon beating 6 of the 8 sub-dungeons. These are all accessed (with the exception of the tutorial sub-dungeon) in a main hub. You simply have to press the up button near an unlocked entrance to begin that dungeon. Two sub-dungeons are available initially, and more sub-dungeons are unlocked as more are completed. There is a degree of flexibility to the order they are tackled, however. Clearing any sub-dungeon will unlock two more, until all 8 are unlocked. Upon clearing a dungeon, you are rewarded with the awakening of a sheep. Why they were put to
sleep we don’t know. It has to do with some magic-y mumbo jumbo that isn’t fully explained, but like a good Mario game, is charming and wonderful in its simplicity. Also, progress is saved after each level. So you can play through a certain level of a dungeon, leave, then come back later from where you left off or try a different dungeon entirely without losing your progress.
Each dungeon is largely a process of trial, error, and reflex. You will need to experiment around, pressing buttons, activating switches, and quickly dashing out of the way or to a destination when needed. Also, an item called the Magic Hat will allow you to teleport Sometimes, however, there may be more than one way to solve a level. For example, in one level, there’s a room full of saws that go in and out once you open up the way to it. You can jump in and quickly dodge out, or you can leave the mouse with the Magic Hat somewhere outside the room and teleport out quickly. Fortunately, there is no penalty when the mouse “dies”: He merely returns to you for use again.
The music is nothing spectacular: It consists of MIDI beats that really set the tense mood of the game. It will keep you moving and excited to proceed, but is ultimately forgettable.
The graphics, too, are nothing spectacular; they are only there to get the job done. They are simple, 8-bit graphics that are beautiful in their simplicity, but hardly rank among the greatest 8-bit art around.
The main focus is the gameplay, and wonderful it is. Every puzzle is brilliantly designed, and range from simple to dastardly. Solving the puzzles should take no major effort from most players. But thinking about what switches to press in a particular order while trying to dodge enemy fire can prove even veterans of the puzzle/platformer genre. The game is almost always challenging, and is always fun to those who love the genre.
It’s short, but features 36 more rooms over 4 sub-dungeons after you complete the main game. Those who played through the whole game are likely to return to beat their best times.
To conclude, this game is a breath of fresh air for the puzzle/platformer genre. It takes a concept and executes it quite well. It’s not likely to win over those who hate the puzzle/platformer genre, but should be gotten by anyone who loves a good game and a challenge.
