Move over, Mario. There’s a new Sheriff in town. It started with Rayman Origins, and continues in Rayman Legends, and it’s official: Rayman is the new king of the 2D Platformer.

Rayman Origins revolutionized the genre with its lush, hand-drawn graphics and backgrounds, brilliantly designed levels and concepts, and near perfect difficulty (there were many checkpoints, and more experienced players could aid less experienced players well). This latter point was achieved with the “bubble” system, similar but not identical to the one found in New Super Mario Bros. When a player is damaged, he/she “bubblizes”, and can be popped by other players. He/she can also move to where other players are, and has complete control over where he/she is in the air, unlike in New Super Mario Bros. These things and more make their return in Legends.

Legends’ story is basic: The Glade of Dreams is attacked, and Rayman and Co. must save it. Pretty basic stuff, but is aided by no absence of style. Fortunately, like in many good platformers, the story isn’t the main focus. Instead, the gameplay reigns front-and-center.

Rayman and friends can perform a variety of actions, and all the characters control similarly. Many basic conventions of the platforming genre are here: You can move, run, jump, wall-jump, swim, and slide. However, Legends goes above and beyond these conventions in various ways.

For example, there is the unique glide ability. After jumping, by pressing and holding jump again, you can glide through the air and descend gradually. This ability can be used to reach new places, and can even be used to ride wind currents upwards. Mastery of this command is necessary to succeed in the game.

In addition, you can run up certain walls. After doing so, by springing off the wall, you can get an extra-fast and springy jump that can launch you quickly to new places. You can even run upside down sometimes! This ability is often necessary in levels that involve outrunning something to reach a goal.

Lastly, there is the ability to attack while in the water. This is nothing new, but it is implemented so well that it feels fresh and new. The attack is similar to your running dash attack while above ground; it propels you through the water quickly and can be used to defeat most enemies in the water.

Murfy will also appear to assist players from time to time. He assists the player in many different ways. For example, he can cut ropes, move platforms, turn wheels, and even help defeat certain enemies. He is controlled with a specific button.

This mechanic really helps to set the game apart. Since Murfy always goes to where he is needed, and it’s clear where he appears, the mechanic never feels intrusive, although it can take some getting used to, especially in levels that require you to use Murfy’s help and move quickly at the same time. Also, it is baffling that it never manages to feel intrusive when you consider the context: Rayman Legends was meant to be a Wii U exclusive!

Throughout the game, two things must be collected: Lums and Teensies. Lums are much more abundant in the game, and are found throughout the levels. They can be found in the air, in the water, in some items in the ground or in the air, from certain medals found in levels, and even by defeating enemies. They can even be gotten by collecting extra hearts, items that prevent you once from bubblizing when hit before consumption.

Also, the system by which Lums are obtained is different than in Rayman Origins. Often, Lums will be part of a chain. The first Lum of this chain is colored purple, and is worth double. The chain will continue as long as the player does not collect a yellow-colored (normal) Lum, or until the player collects the last Lum in the chain. In Origins, you had a time limit to gather certain red Lums that were worth double after collecting a large Lum. Legends’ system generally allows the player to proceed at a much more leisurely pace than in Origins.

Teensies can be found throughout levels, either strapped to poles or in cages. Their high-pitched “help me!” is a hint that one is nearby. Hitting one with an attack will free it and reward the player with 25 Lums. In regular levels, there are two Teensies hidden in secret areas, that require you to complete a challenge before reaching the trapped Teensie.

The Lums unlock new characters and various items at the end of the level. As you collect more Lums, new characters will unlock, many of which are variants of previous characters. For example, there are several forms of Globox, Rayman, and Teensies to be unlocked. The items at the end of the level depend on how many Lums you got, in the order bronze trophy, silver trophy, lucky ticket, gold trophy. The trophies are mostly for show, but the lucky tickets can unlock Lums, pets that give some Lums every day, or even remixed levels from Rayman Origins!

The Teensies unlock new levels. As you collect more Teensies, more levels and worlds will unlock. There are 700 in all to find!

Another thing that sets the game apart are the various types of levels:
1. Regular: These levels have your character(s) simply trying to get to the end of the level.
2. Character Unlock: It’s a mad dash to get to the finish! Something is after you; it could be a wall of flames or even a rising pile of sand! If you get caught, it’s back to the last checkpoint with you! If you successfully complete the level, you’ll be rewarded with a new character.
3. Music: These levels are a fantastic diversion from the rest of the game. They’ll have you madly dashing to the finish line to the beat of original songs or remixed versions of songs, including Black Betty, Woo Hoo, and Eye of the Tiger. One level has you dashing from one collapsing rooftop to another while hitting enemies to the beat. Another has you quickly switching between on-land and underwater sections to the beat. All in all, they serve to further distinctify Legends from its predecessor and add a lot of flair in the process.
4. Boss Fights: As the title implies, you’ll have to fight bosses. However, these are not the final levels of each world (those are the Music levels). This does not mean that they are without challenge. The bosses spread throughout the five main worlds are fairly difficult and diverse, but the learning curve between each boss is excellently planned. For example, the first boss is a simple fight against a dragon, wherein positioning is key. Little more than simple trial-and-error is necessary to beat this boss. However, the last boss is far more difficult. It features a mass of dark blobs that form shapes, and fairly difficult platforming sections in between. To simply get in a hit on the boss, you have to put forth some dextrous maneuvers. But by the time players reach the boss, they will have mastered everything they need to beat it.
5. Save the Teensies!: Three Teensies are strapped to rockets. Save them before time runs out! If you’re quicker than 40 seconds to complete the level, you’ll save all three. Between 40 and 50, and you’ll save two. Between 50 and 60, and you’ll save only one. Any more than that will result in failure. These are among the most difficult, tricky levels you’ll be faced with, largely because of the time limit. These levels award detailed plans, but only if you can carry them out quickly. You have to learn to think on your feet to succeed.
6. Distorted Music: In the final, extra world, there are distorted forms of the music levels encountered previously. These levels can be downright devilish. For example, in the first one, the screen splits into many smaller screens until at one point the screens are almost imperceptible, even on large TVs. In another level, the screen turns many different ways to try and throw you off. Knowing the layout of these levels is essential.
7. Back to Origins: Classic levels from Origins return, this time remixed with Legends’ flair. There are significant differences in the levels, none so much to remove the nostalgia associated with the levels, though. These levels range from riding giant mosquitos through the air to chasing a treasure chest to more normal levels, such as the regular levels in Legends’ five main worlds.

Checkpoints are scattered liberally, but not too liberally throughout the levels. Even the boss levels contain checkpoints. This helps to offset the difficulty of the game a bit, and allows the players to catch their breath in between sections.

The music in the game is fantastic, and helps to set the mood of the game. It is always zany, crazy, and fun, and like Origins’ music, can even lead to a good laugh. For example, in the Woo Hoo parody level “Gloo Gloo”, hearing the song reduced to goofy “gloo gloos” instead of “woo hoos” while bashing enemies and even your friends can lead to hysteria! While the music in the Music levels is the best of the game, the music in other levels shines too, and is fairly diverse and zany, much like the game.

Also, the art is brilliant! The game is built upon the Ubi Art Framework, and it shows. This is a game that was drawn beautifully before it was ever put upon a screen. While the graphics are noticeably more 3D-looking than in Origins, Ubisoft didn’t ditch the hand-drawn look. Instead, they built upon it, and the result is something just as beautiful, if not more gorgeous than Origins.

Of course, up to 3 friends can join in any level of the game. There’s also a soccer mode called Kung Foot added into the game. This game is a welcome diversion from the rest of the game, and has players on two sides scrambling to hit a ball into the opponents’ goal. This can get pretty wild with 4 players, as the players will be scrambling for the ball and hitting each other.

Also, there is a daily and a weekly challenge to help you keep your skills up. You can even earn trophies and Lums by competing against others worldwide! These challenges are tests of endurance, and have you scrambling to get as far as you can. Even to this day, challenges are updated.

Lastly, but sadly, I must cover the cons of this game. While there are practically no flaws in the game itself, there is in its DRM. Steam requires that you also have a Uplay account, and it is there that a separate game key is activated. Although Steam will register that you are playing the game, it is through Uplay and not Steam that the game is played.

Also, there are no cloud saves for this game. This means that your saved games are limited to the computer that you are playing the game on. You can’t resume your progress on another computer.

All in all, however; this game is the pinnacle of the 2D platformer. It doesn’t revolutionize everything, but what it does bring to the table is definitely revolutionary as a whole.

There's a ton of details here, definintly an A review once I put it in the directorty. I dont believe I ever played the game but this review makes it look like it's an amzing game that I shoudl check out. Great job.

I heard so many good things about this game and after so much procrastinating I finally went ahead and bought it ( PS4 ) , played it and I am glad I did!
Definitely one of the best platform games I have ever played and if you like Mario platform style games you will like Rayman Legends!
