Um, haven't I reviewed this before? Like, a long time ago? Well, I never described stuff well, especially the main game itself. Well, I'm giving the game... another go. Because it is now in the VGR for info.

Pokémon Channel was a game created that allowed you to do special actions, and also watch different channels while playing and having fun with everyone's favorite pokemon, Pikachu. You could visit areas, talk to other Pokemon, earn some "nice cards" from either a shop channel or answering the Pokemon's questions correctly for the first time. The way you had to play the game was based on your game system clock, involving you to play for apparently 5 days total. The game is a sequel to the 1999 game, "Hey you, Pikachu!" where many similarities can be noticed when comparing.

This game was the reason why I hated Pikachu. Because of #sadPikaSFXplz and what gets worse is that he would ALWAYS face the screen and then get sad, literally attempting to annoy the player. It just disgusts me and annoys me to the point where I have to mute the TV and go full screen on the TV.

Ok, have I said enough? Now I'm ready.

Graphics - 7

Compared to "Hey you, Pikachu!" this game was on the GameCube which uses higher graphic resolution and power, so comparing is too easy. The pokemon look very nice and they move around decently. The backgrounds are nice and the stuff in the game look pleasant to take a gaze at. Well, Pikachu looks nice, with the signature tail and cheeks too.

Sounds - 5

You'll wonder why I rated this as a 5. The music is nice to listen and the sound effects from the Pokemon are pretty cool, but here's the real issue. The music and sound effects are TOO repetitive!!! The fact that you'll be watching about a dozen shows being bored constantly seeing the same thing can bore anyone who has played Pokemon or is very young. The music is composed well, but you'll be hearing it for generations to come, because nothing new will ever come on once you get everything. It's similar to how Melee is known for using the same characters again: Fox, Falco, Marth, Sheik, Jigglypuff, etc. AKA no unique stuff to find.

Addictiveness - 3

You'll have to play for 5 days in real time via game days using the system clock to get to the ending. Once you beat the game and get all the channels, nothing new comes on and nothing changes. You can get Poké money after beating the game to get other items but it is just about the same. There are some things you can do with Pikachu like go fishing on the beach, play with a beach ball, etc. but that's really all the unique things you can do. Well, there many different channels you can watch, like manipulating the weather with Slowpoke's Weather, seeing if Oddish is the Odd One Out, sleeping by counting sheep in Mareep Farm, even watching news from the mostly sleepy Psyduck on Pokemon Mews Flash, etc. It just doesn't have that much stuff to please the player outside the Pokemon Mini.

Story - 3

This game doesn't have a good story. It starts with some Magnemites carrying a TV and it comes to your house, and you introduce yourself like the other pokemon games. Then you hear a few pokemon outside. Once you open the door, you'll see Treecko and Torchic flee away fast, but Pikachu comes in and is pleased to see you. Then, you watch the first episode of the Pichu Bros anime with Pikachu, and then tune to other channels such as Pokemon News Flash and Shop n' Squirtle to collect items required to beat the game. This is where the game begins. It just doesn't feel like it goes well with the system clock time feature, mixed with the fact that all you do here is get more channels, get a few passes to get the others, bleh. Then again, this game was mostly made for kids and even some Pokemon fans. Disappointing that the story wasn't good at all.

Depth - 4

This is where the game gets interesting. Like said before, the game uses system clock for progress, so the game will take 5-8 days to complete. You get passes from Shop n' Squirtle to get to areas that are mandatory for game completion, you also need to get quite some Poké money so you can get everything, especially the special Pokemon Mini games. There are 6 that you can get, with "Snorlax's Lunchtime" being present with the console. Ways of getting Poké money in this game mainly involve getting questions answered correctly on the Wobbuffet Quiz show. Plus, what's after beating the game? You get, nothing! Good day sir! Nah, kidding. You can go and collect the rest of the nice cards and get all the TVs you can get off of Shop n' Squirtle while at the same time having to watch that quiz show featuring Wobbuffet. There's only 4 areas you can go to outside your house, Springleaf Field, Viradian Forest, Cobalt Coast, and Mt. Snowfall. The latter 3 except for Cobalt Coast has to be accessed to even finish the game.

Difficulty - Real rating is 3; 2 for main game, 4 for all 6 Pokemon Mini games combined.

The game itself is too easy. I was 6 when I first played and I beat the game all by myself and I was completely new to video games, so I am surprised. Even when I was 6, this was too easy. The controls are just the controller stick to move the cursor, and the A button to choose or do an action. You can also use the C-stick if you get lost in an area where you can't find Pikachu, you just tap it once in any direction, and it automatically targets him.

--------------------
Now for a different long section of the difficulty; the Pokemon Mini games.

Snorlax's Lunchtime - 4

In this game, you press the A button to eat food. You need to think fast or you'll accidently eat a Pichu. Try to eat a Pichu and you lose the game. Your high score is measured on your "yum" not your score. This is why sometimes you'll have 2 scores with the same yum either on purpose or what. In this case, it actually shows the higher score, and then the lower if a tie with Yum occur on your rankings. For example:

2. ANU 38 yum 745
3. KOD 38 yum 670

My record on this game is 70 yum. Try to beat it if you can. Also, the last 3 notes on the Game Over screen sound funny for me to make a song.

Slowking's Judge - 5

This game involves you judging if the soccer ball is in the box or out. You press B if it's in, and the A button if it's out. At 5 points, the game starts trying to mess the ball up in ways to trick you and test your reflexes. At 15 points, the ball starts disappearing sometimes until it hits the ground. At 20 and after, the game reaches max speed and difficulty. If you can reach that, it then becomes a test of how well you can do with the game trying to mess with you. If the ball doesn't touch the ground at all sometimes, you press the A button to call "out" on the ball. Once you mess up, you lose.
My record is 59. Can you beat that?

Chansey's Dribble - 3

How the game works is that you press + left or + right to move Chansey. To get the goal is 24 numbers away, you need to kick the ball to the goal many times. To get a quick time, you need to try to kick the ball as many times in the center as you can to get a very quick time. If you miss, you press the A button to regain control of the ball. Kicking it on the sides bounces it all over the field.

My record for this game is 18.641 seconds! You need to get every kick in the middle to even get close to this.

Pokemon Pinball mini - 8

In this game, you have to use Diglett's power to hit the ball to get it in all the holes on the board within a rather small unfair time limit. In this game, you press the Z button on the controller (C button on the console itself) to charge and then release. The thing that causes this to be so hard is that the controls and the precision needed to get the ball into the holes is flatout not even fair. Many levels are almost impossible to clear due to the difficulty for controlling the ball and even landing it into holes, including the very short time limits.

- The demo restricts you to the first 10 levels of quest mode. Progress can't be saved like any other demo.

Pokemon Puzzle Collection - 6

This game isn't that hard, but the controls vary between puzzles. The demo restricts you to 3 motion puzzles, 3 shadow puzzles, and 3 rescue missions. The motion puzzles involve you swapping a tile with literally ANY other tile on the board, making it a whole lot easier. The first puzzle is too easy, then the last 2 are very hard because there's only outlines. The shadow puzzles involve you putting tiles and rotating them with the B button to clear the puzzles. The second one is the only hard one. Then there are rescue missions. In these, you get a pokemon out of a maze by constantly moving tiles and moving the pokemon until you get into the hole to complete the stage. Level 2 might be hard, but level 3 is a nightmare. Reason why I rated it a 6.

- Like all other demos, the game won't allow you to save or make progress outside the restricted area.

Pikachu's Rocket Start - 10

Unfortunately the hardest one of all. In this game, you wait for the controller to rumble, and as soon as you can, press either the Z, A, or B button. This is like Samurai Kirby from Kirby Super Star and its remake, but with a catch. Here's the catch to this, if you go too early, you LOSE. If you don't start quick enough, you LOSE. The time you need to get past the first 2 opponents is 0.30 or faster and 0.27 or faster respectively. Then, you race Pikachu himself as Pikachu. Pikaceptionachu! Sorry. You need under 0.20 or faster to beat him and get a simple you win screen. The Game Over music will be stuck in your head for the rest of your life whenever you see this game.

My fastest time is 0.242! You need under 0.20 to win the game, and it's nigh impossible to get even close. Play the game yourself at full speed, and tell me that you can't beat Pikaman!

Overall - 5.3

This isn't one of the good games out there. Yes, it has outstanding visuals and nice sound effects and music that gets REPETITIVE too quickly, but the Pokemon Mini games are amazing along with the stuff you could do. The story wasn't good, the #SadPikachuSFX got so annoying and just too fast for me to have to mute the TV every time he's going to face the screen and get upset.

Do you want to play the game? I am not going to bite, but beware, you'll be remembering the stupid "not Nintendo 64" gimmick of him facing the screen and then getting upset at YOU.

Now for a list of fun facts:

Did you ever know that only 2 of the 6 Pokemon Mini games in Pokémon Channel were ever released in America?

The Chum Chum Rankings channel features a segment where it shows your secrets, mainly your game stats. Such as how many times you went to a certain place, how many times you did something, how many minutes you spent on TV, etc. Smoochum also shows your Pokemon Mini high scores, and even how much time you had watched a specific channel.

There's a Japanese language for the Pichu Bros anime. Collecting it will allow you to access the Japanese dialogue for the anime. No visuals are changed at all. I love the lyrics to the theme though! Pichu Pichu bokura wa kyoudai~ <3

There's a trick that's undocumented that allows you to skip segments of Quiz Wobbuffet to quickly get to the present quiz to earn money faster. As soon as the picture of the channel shows on the screen, AKA the channel resumes, switch a channel, and then right back quickly. Do this until you see questions 3 and 6 respectively. Skipping those questions ALSO skips the present quiz, so you have to sit through those.

In Pokemon Puzzle Collection, pressing Z on the main menu brings you to a clock that shows what time it is now. It uses your system clock to keep time.

For all Pokemon Mini games, pressing the start button turns off the Pokemon Mini. Press start again to turn it back on.

Mareep Farm can go up to as high as 5,000 sheep. 1 sheep jumps the fence every 3 seconds, so it's 15,000 seconds. That's 4 1/4 hours of sitting. About 255 minutes in total.

Now for something silly:

Jigglypuff obviously makes appearances, as a doll, a random pokemon silhouette, and even shows up herself. The silhouette, I got on camera on Quiz Wobbuffet when I saw the shape of the pokemon.

That's it. Now I can sleep without thinking of Pikachu.

Wow, I haven't played Pokemon Channel in years, and I kinda forgot about it until your review. Good job on it! You detailed the review pretty flawlessly. Good job, man. You still have the touch.
