I posted after 1 AM in my time zone so I wouldn't cheat Tour de Vizzed.
Back in the days of the 2000's coming along, people have thought of trying to see how fast games can be completed legitimately without any form of modifying once the Game Genie for the NES became well-known.
In 2001, there was a famous TAS of Super Mario Bros 3, being one of the first Tool Assisted Speedruns ever made! It was done by a Japanese TASer who later became well-known for the amazing speedrun. Many people who never heard of speedrunning thought that was done in real time, and others thought the person cheated.
Later on, once TAS started becoming a wide known form of speed running, we have found TASes and even real time runs that kept us going, "Whoa! That was ridiculous!"
Well, I have a question for you people.
What are your favorite non-TAS and TAS speedruns?
You can optionally link the runs. Give credit to the author of the run. Read the speedrun forum rules for more info.
Your favorite runs can be:
- Any game speedrun you've seen
- Any category run of your picking
- Cheated runs as long as those are not "skip to ending" runs
- Game crash or freeze runs
- April Fools runs
I'll share my favorite runs for you to see.
My favorite non-TAS run is this:
Super Mario Bros Speedrun in 4:57.69 (World Record)
Author - lordsaradoc
This is just flatout impressive. Never knew that this would be possible to do 4:57 in real time. This run can easily confuse some people who know the difference between TASes and non-TASes, mainly because of the video quality. It was done on an emulator, but it didn't use any frame advance or save states, as the descr
iption says.
This run also managed to get on the "Gaming" section of YouTube at the time of its upload, getting at least 2 million views in just a few days. It's been verified by timing from Speed Demos Archive, a real time speedrun community that has checked and verified countless runs that have broken times continuously over the years. Right now, the video has roughly 2.6 million views. Many comments say it's fake because they say the person was cheating, but the descr
iption reads that he used a emulator, but didn't actually use save states or frame advance. andrewg1990 has 4:58.09 but he will still try to get 4:57.xx also. He's been trying to reach the game's limit for at least 9 years now.
My favorite TASes are:
Super Mario World "Arbitrary Code Execution" in 2:25.19
Author: Masterjun3
I am not going to reveal anything that happened in this run. Click the link to see for yourself. This has also been verified at Awesome Games Done Quick 2014 at the end of the TAS block in the middle of the 5 day marathon of non-stop speedruns.
Pokemon Gold with Pi (in about 31:41.55)
Author: FractalFusion
Skip to 30:30 if you want to skip 30 minutes of literally nothing but getting to the code execution sequence, or watch from start to finish to see the entire setup. Right when the execution starts, he uses the coin case to start writing code from inputs to then make music after playing Bellsprout's cry to start the execution for the ever-famous math symbol, ?. (If your computer can't display it, it says "Pi")
See the link in the video's descr
iption to see his notes for how he did this.
