Neon Explosion

Hotline Miami - Playstation Vita / Playstation 3

Game id: 73470

Rare comes a game where you are not only frustrated with difficulty in a game, but you are also amused and intrigued with it. Rare comes an indie title with those 8 bit graphical designs that isn’t generic feeling, but rather a refreshing taste of artwork that only accentuates the style the game wants to give you. And rarest of all, it’s hard to come by a game that is not only intensely violent, but a game that’s not hindered by the edginess of having such tones. Hotline Miami is one of those games.

Hotline Miami is a top down action game made by Dennaton Games. The game sleekly yet
surely advertises a game filled with neon, blood, and action, and it pulls off just that. The game is riddled with enemies, weapons, and a lot of fast paced movements that make you think of the game as more of a puzzle than anything. This game is truly nothing to be messed with, and just every element of it contributes to its excellence.

Hotline Miami’s graphics are a throwback to the graphics of 80’s arcade games, mixed with the
silky neon colors and backgrounds that were lushly provided back in those days. The sprites all work perfectly, they look great, and it really pops when in 720p. The detail is great, and even though it’s an indie game, and almost every indie game has this 80’s 8 bit style to it, Hotline Miami stands out from them all and creates its own experience with the graphics, and really makes us feel part of what’s happening. The 8 bit graphics work perfectly in the game, and a lot of games should take influence from how well the style of the game works with how it looks. Hotline Miami looks perfect for the style of art and the decade it’s set in.

Hotline Miami’s Graphics – 10/10

The sound in this game is phenomenal. The sound effects are effective, the music is musical, and the guns are gunny. Every sound in this game is fitting to the neon style. The weapons in this game are all great sounding, but most of all, the soundtrack is beyond amazing. It has the best possible soundtrack for a neon game, songs that sound poppy, have that tremendously catchy sound, and they’re incredibly unique songs you’ll want to listen to even when not playing the game. Deep Cover, Crystals, and MOON are my personal favorites, and you’ll have to agree when you hear them.

Hotline Miami’s Sound – 10/10

When you first play Hotline Miami, you’ll really get into it. Everything about it makes you want more, and you’d rue the day when you have to put the controller down. The game is hooking, the game is beyond fun, and it’s all just replayable.

Hotline Miami’s Addictiveness – 10/10

This is a large game for something so simple and tiny looking. The 20 levels in the game are
large for what they are, there’s a big puzzle you have to solve by collecting one letter from every stage, you have to collect all of the animal masks hidden in high scores or in the maps themselves, you have to collect all of the weapons, and most of all, you have to get A+ on all of the missions, and you have to pull off some crazy combos to fully enjoy the game. The game itself should take 2-3 days to beat, and you are guaranteed to die a lot, so you’ll have to replay the sections over and over, and master the enemies patterns to make the best combos, to get the best score, and to strategize just right. The difficulty of the game not only accentuates the depth of the game, but it also adds a lot more thought and skill in order to get it right.

Hotline Miami’s Depth – 10/10

The story of Hotline Miami is smooth, cool, but weird. You move through the 80’s in a terrifying journey guided by strange phone calls, and the orders of men in masks forcing you through a bloodbath where you’re the only survivor. In a somewhat geopolitical nod to society, the game constantly reminds you of not only the themes of the game, but the purpose of what happens in the game. It’s a really cool take on the 80’s, and it’s something you’d imagine would be in an old action movie. The story has nothing holding it back from being purely interesting and simply cool to experience. The story also doesn’t get in the way of gameplay, with the cutscenes happening in between the stages, which is a great thing to have in a game where your movements have to be quick and smart. It’s a great tale, and it’s just perfect.

Hotline Miami’s Story – 10/10

I’ve said many times in this review already, this game is HARD. The enemies are placed in ways where you will need to think it through before passing, and you’ll need a lot of time to get through. You die after one bullet, one swipe, or one stab by an enemy, making it extra hard if you can’t kill one quick enough. You have to start at the beginning of the floor you’re on after you die, which isn’t really a big deal, but you’ll be going back a lot. You are no doubt going to die many, many times and it will take a ton of effort to not only beat the game, but to get good at it. The patterns are easy to learn, but the actions are hard to pull off. You’re going to be upset by it, but you’re going to feel just a ton of satisfaction when you finally get through that level, and you’re going to have fun while doing it, even if
you’re losing.

Hotline Miami’s Difficulty – 10/10

So, as you can see from this review, I loved this game, and everything about it. There isn’t a single flaw within it that I can find, and there’s not a problem with it. The game is good, great, and perfect. The difficulty is high but satisfying, the levels are big, the soundtrack is the best thing you’ll ever hear, the gameplay is perfect, and the graphics, overall style, and just everything about the game coincides with each other to not only provide a unique experience, but an unforgettable game that will easily appear on your top 10 list when you beat it.

Hotline Miami is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played, and I’m sure you’d feel the same.

I don't need to do the math. This game is a 10.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for helping with my procrastination in resume writing.

Local Mods : I accidentally posted this thread twice, so can you close one of these?

Also, I'd like this review to be considered for featured review for this game, so if you could revise it for applicability, I'd love it.
