Hey, it's me! It has really been a while since I last did a review. Over 4 months, in fact! Here I am reviewing Crackers Revenge V, an amateur(?) game for the Commodore 64, apparently programmed by "Wrench" from a programming team called "The Rat Pack." [Note: I think "Crackers" may have been meant to say "Cracker's" in the game title, if the game's protagonist were to be someone named Cracker.] As usual I will be using the ratings scale found in my SMB(TG16/PCE pirate) review. Graphics: 6. I've seen much better than this on other C64 games. At the title screen, the game's name is just rendered in plain large text in the middle of the screen, with credits text scrolling by on different rows on the screen. The font is nice at least. The only "decoration" is how it's split up into rows in different moderately attractive colors, and some small animated crudely animated sprites on the top and bottom of the screen. When you get to the game, it's still not that great; Aliens are rendered with 2 colors and the life counter and alien sprites (although recolored) appear to be taken from Namco's Galaxian, with the ship being a simplified 3-color recolor of the Fighter from Galaga. Not impressive so far. Tl;dr: Lackluster. Sprites are totally copied. Sound: 9 nearing 10. MAN. This is a major step up from the graphics department. The title screen is a well-orchestrated ballad(correct word?) that sets the standard high for introducing an epic game. I could listen to that for while. In fact, I did for a very long time while writing this review(it can't be turned off, Vizzed's fake "pause" button doesn't work, and I kept the game window open for convenience), and I'm still not sick of it. But does it get better? Yes it does. Play the game for yourself. I don't care if other aspects of the game turn you off, you NEED to play this if only for the in-game music. Everyone does. I could get this stuck in my head. It's the kind of jam I want to hear playin on the radio 24-7 instead of the Frozen soundtrack. Everything is perfect, the little chuchu chuchu chu chu, chu; chu chuchu chuchu accompaniment, the peeoww peooww peeeooowww of the ray gun melody, the cc c c c c sound...and as it progresses, the oooonnhnhn, AAHHMHM oohhn ohhhhn, ohhhhhhn wave, the tototottiktiktiik at that one part, the awesome clooawww cloaww cloaw clooooaaaww unison part...it's amazing. The one downfall is that the game is always playing one of the musics when running, and in the game there are no sound effects, presumably to save tracks for the BGM. Otherwise this category would be 10/10. Tl;dr: Sound needs to be heard to be believed. No other sound effects though. Addictiveness: 8. This is addictive in both ways! I'll always think of it when pickin a game to play, and when I get a game over I'll start right back again. Multiple times. For a while. I don't know why this is...Tl;dr: Not really needed, it's like 2 sentences... Story: N/A. Just shoot aliens forever. If there was supposed to be a story it would get a pretty low score since there's like no exposition for it. Depth: 2. Nothing new. Except some listable things: Trying to listen through the entire BGM song(which is like impossible), alien attack patterns, and the messages on the title screen. That's literally it. All of the things. ALL of th8m. Seriously, why? Was it too much work to put in some powerups, or enemy convoy arrangement variations, or some neat mechanics, or anything?! This might be acceptable in the case that it's just a Galaxian pirate, which I do not consider impossible... Tl;dr: Like, nothing. The C64 can do more than this. Difficulty: 5. The controls are fine, it's just the game itself. Aliens move zigzaggedly, in stark contrast to the smooth twirl found in the Galaxian/Galaga series. They also can shoot you. This somehow messes me up. I think I probably just suck at the game...Tl;dr: It shouldn't be hard, but it somehow is. I think I just suck at it. I thought this was going to make this game look great, but now that I look back on it, it kinda sucks a little. I really just liked it for the music I think, I have a particular taste for good music. (Explaining my interest in Domino Man, Metro-Cross, etc.) I did give it a 6.9, it's pretty good if you give it a chance. Hope to do some more reviewin later!
