The USA's defence and especially their goalkeeper Tim Howard performed outstandingly
Tim Howard actually broke the record for the most amount of saves in a World Cup Finals match ever with 15 saves
(In fact the standard of goalkeeping has, on the whole, been very good with a few exceptions like Russia's Akinfeev)

So there wasn't much wrong with the USA's defence, it is just a shame the attack could not take their chances in front of goal because they created enough to win that match

The USA have nothing to be ashamed of with regards to their performance at the World Cup unlike, Spain, England, Bosnia, Italy and Portugal

I am looking forward to the USA hosting the Copa América Centenario in 2016 and hope Jurgen Klinsmann will continue to build on the USA's successful World Cup 2014 in preparation for  hosting this huge event

I'm a bit late with this but anyways:

Algeria-Germany: 1-2
The desert foxes fought very brave. They gave everything they had and they definitely didn't back down agains a strong force like Germany. They have earned everybody's respect by fighting so strong. Still, I'm not that surprised Germany won as they are a very strong team with good cooperation, great chances and with players like Özil it's hard to lose. I'm very excited about the upcoming Germany-France match.

Belgium-USA: 2-1
Another interesting match. Belgium had a ton of chances but it took them more than 97 minutes to make the first goal. Their second goal was very beautiful as well. But when Julian Green scored, things turned around. The USA became a lot more fit, started to attack aggresively and their free kick was incredible. They almost scored and the score almost became 2-2. I have to say, that was quite shocking to see. But still, I'm happy Belgium won, they deserve it.

So, the matches are as following:
Quarter finals:
Brazil-Colombia.
Netherlands-Costa Rica.
Germany-France.
Belgium-Argentina.

It will be four great matches I think, I'm very curious who will move on and who won't.

FunnyFurret :

Yeah, Tim Howard is the only player who played all 90 plus minutes with any effectiveness. Our defense was god awful (led to a bazillion shots on Howard, and a World Cup record in saves), and our midfield had their thumbs up their asses all day.

Our strikers were alright, but couldn't make things happen until Julian Green (I think he's 19) got a goal on his first touch.

I'm feeling excited about the future of US Soccer, as this tournament has brought big awareness to the states, and by escaping the Group of Death, we've done more than anyone thought possible. Even had we beaten Belgium, we'd have to face Argentina, who I'd say right now is the favorite to win the tournament, even though they had a rough first game.

Belgium may have played the States well, but they'll need to step up their game. The USA isn't known for prolific goal scoring, and yet, we had a lot of great shots in the 2nd half of extra time. Lionel Messi will pick apart that defense and set all kinds of plays up if Belgium doesn't close up their formation.

But I digress, we may have lost, but I would say we are the big winners of the World Cup, because we accomplished something many of us considered impossible. We survived a team that has haunted us the past 8 years. We survived a team with the best player in the world (Ronaldo) on it. We played Germany to a 1-0 loss, which really is impressive to me.

I just hope the officiating is better going forward. There were a lot of suspect calls in the first round, and the stoppage time thing is starting to bug me (I'm relatively new to soccer as a fan, and stoppage time already feels like something that needs improvement).

legacyme3 : Julian Green's goal had the whole world cheering for the USA (apart from the Belgian fans)
The Jermaine Jones chance a couple of minutes later and the inventive free kick which resulted in a very good save from Courtois to deny Clint Dempsey had everyone jumping from their seats, it was just so exciting

When you say the stoppage time thing is bugging you, do you mean the extra time when the match is level at full time (90 minutes) ?
If so, that ruling was brought into the game to replace the previous system which had the captains of each team tossing a coin to see which team progresses to the next stage
Which would be an extremely unsatisfying and frustrating way to end a team's tournament

If you meant the added time at the end of each half of play, indicated by the fourth official as a minimum of, for example, two , three or four minutes
That replaced the previous system which was that the amount of time added for injuries, substitutions, time wasting by the leading team etc. was just at the discretion of the referee so no-one knew how long they had
Unfortunately, this system is still subject to abuse from less scrupulous teams so I agree with you, it could do with some further improvements

Destifen :

I don't have a problem with the concept of stoppage time, nor do I have a problem with overtime in general.

My problem is that in the second half of extra time between the USA and Belgium, despite several time wasting practices by Belgium (taking their sweet time rolling on the ground and on substitutions) there was only a MINUTE (one) of stoppage time to end the game.

I don't want to sound like a USA homer, but there should have been 3 minutes. Would they have made a difference? Probably not. But it's the principle of the matter. We've been hurt by bizarre stoppage time decisions all world cup.

legacyme3 : Belgium's time wasting tactics are precisely the types of unscrupulous abuse I was referring to
According to the laws of the game, USA should definitely have had more stoppage time and, when there is any time wasting during stoppage time, that time is supposed to be added onto the end of the fourth official's estimation (Belgium wasted more than half of the stoppage time taking a goal kick and that time was not added on)
You don't sound like a USA homer, football fans from all over the world (apart from Belgium again) were very frustrated and disappointed that the USA's honesty and passion for the game seemed to lose out to Belgium's cynical and underhanded tactics

I believe those extra few minutes could have made all the difference as the Belgian midfield were absolutely exhausted and it was wave after wave of USA attack after Julian Green's goal
I also believe that if the USA had got to extra time, Tim Howard would have been the hero in the penalty shoot out

legacyme3 : That practically happens in every game. I lost it when Jürgen Klinsmann yelled at the ref for wasting time. But honestly what difference would it have made at that point? Jones kept getting the ball and then taking the shot. If it wasn't for him USA most likely could have been advancing instead of Belgium. Tim Howard played perfectly that game and was probably one of the best players of the game along with Yedlin. However USA only started playing the way they should have in extra time. If they played like that for even the whole of first half they would also probably be advancing.

My predictions for the quarter finals:

Brazil will beat Columbia

Netherlands will beat Costa Rica (Although Costa Rica may just pull an upset if they continue playing the way they are)

Germany will beat France

Aregentina will beat Beligum (Although Belgium has a chance seeing as how Argentina is just barely scraping by)

You called it right. Costa Rica almost did pull the upset as they lost in the shootout.

Having matched most of the "key" matches of the tournament, when I could, I've been really impressed by several countries who people wouldn't give a hoot about - Costa Rica, Belgium, Switzerland, USA to name a few.
Costa Rica have really impressed me, especially their goalkeeper who I believe is gonna make a name for himself in European football in the upcoming season; the whole team can bow-out of the World Cup as winners, getting out of a group that was seen as the group of death (with added bite).
Belgium have the quality to do well, they've proven themselves this year.
Switzerland, who on paper are usually written off, held themselves and could of snatched it all!
USA...what can I say? Tim Howard was the one-man show, like most of the goalkeepers in the tournament, proving why he was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson for Manchester United in the first place! (this comes from a Liverpool fan, too)

England though, being an Englishman, I can't say I'm not disappointed or surprised that we crashed out - too much hype on the team by the media and our own supporters; Wayne Rooney is over-rated, Steven Gerrard should focus on his club football, we need a big shake up!

Spain too, oh god they crashed and burned like a flapjack! The drubbing by the Netherlands in the opening match was the turning point!

As for the tournament? I'm looking forward to both semi-finals! I can't choose a winner yet, but I'd love to see the Netherlands take the final!

And the Neymar injury - Disgusting foul, the player should be banned for several matches because of it! Dangerous, reckless, and not needed - career-threatening injury too >.

I have to say that I really love living in London
especially now
I have to thank the mods for stopping me playing online games on an online game website
because real life is amazing (I should be old enough to know better)

(tried to find a definitive video of black Sabbath at Hyde park, in London, that I went to on Friday

the brazian women dancing in oxford street told me James Rodriguez might not have been on the winning side when I got my night bus home from the bus stop outside hamleys in regents street (only after a few of us visiting "ain't nothin' but"
the best live blues bar in London (not just because I have played there, the reason I played the is because it is the best

Saturday, I watched the predictable world cup (it now seems ok to break someone's back)

today, (where ever you are), my continuing curse of not being allowed to play online games means I had to spend my afternoon on Henman Hill and watch the Wimbledon men's Single's Final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokavic
Please let the ladies know that there is a match going on!
The Pimms and the wine can be controlled

the continuing curse of living in London while being yellow seems like an aspiration means I will have to go to north London tomorrow, on my bicycle (and I will not be wearing yellow, well maybe )
I will go to the fan park, I will not be able to keep up with the cyclists, they are amazing

I did manage to see them when I was on holiday in St tropez a few years ago, and they are just so fast, do not get in the way!
le magnifique!

See you in Finsbury Park!!!!

The only trophy parade London will see this season!!!

*Watches Brazil vs Germany game*

Well, that was the most atrocious thing I ever saw. I'm pretty sure Brazil has never been defeated quite so overwhelmingly. I'd expect that from some team who made it into the tournament just barely, but
Brazil? In the semi-finals, no less? It's stupid.

On a bonus note, other people are pissed by this as well. The second I stepped out of my house after watching the game I saw German fans harassing a guy waving a Brazilian flag on his car. Crazy stuff!

I watched the match hoping for some end-to-end action, I disappointed by 50% - It was all one-way traffic in the first half, especially in the six minutes of madness that topped the six minutes of madness that I last witnessed in 2005 (Liverpool v AC Milan, Champions League Final). I knew once the third goal went in that Brazil would have a tough fight to get anything, and I knew once half-time rolled around that it'd be the end of the massacre.
Oscar getting a consolation goal didn't do anything for the match itself, but credit to him for getting a goal instead of giving up - unlike the Brazilian defence, especially David Luiz and Maicon.

But I do wonder what the result would of been if Neymar and Thiago Silva was playing. Either way, Brazil will have a huge deconstruction and reconstruction of the squad - just like in 1950, after Brazil lost the final, in the World Cup they hosted, to Uruguay.

Really looking forward to the Netherlands v Argentina now, and hoping the Netherlands win!

Even though it was justice for them beating Chile, it was such a painful soccer match to watch. I have never seen Brazil or any team ever get such a good ol' fashion butt whoppin like that.

My thoughts of the world cup semi final:Brazil (hosts) vs Germany (cybermen in disguise)

Brazil: I was wondering how well they would do without their one and only star player Neymar and they were very poor. They are a one man team as they was no team play at all during the first half. Once Germany had scored their first goal it was over. They fell apart and gave up. There was no fight in them left. This was not the Brazil everyone knows them as. This was a team that relied way too much on Neymar to win matches. Very poor performance and there will be many players that will not be wearing a Brazil shirt again I reckon. Though to give them credit they started strong in the second half but by that time it was too late and eventually Germany took control again and scored two extra goals.

Germany:Masterclass! World Class! Anything of the sorts. This team is easily the best in the world and they not only proved that by their performance last night but they taught Brazil how to play football/soccer. They dominated in every inch of the field and have broken quite a few records along the way. Scored 5 goals in around 30 minutes which is quite impressive. The only team that has done that is Hungary. Also this is the heaviest defeat in a world cup ever and is the heaviest defeat to Brazil as well. Another thing to say is that well done to Klose who now has broken the record of world cup goals beating the Brazilian Ronaldo's record. So well done Germany and it is now over Argentina vs Netherlands. Come on NETHERLANDS!!!!

A boring anti-climax for a semi-final, compared to the first one, but another match goes to extra time and penalties. I wanted the Netherlands to win, but Argentina looked really strong at penalties but they'll have to do the job in 90 minutes against Germany, who look to prove why they're the best.

Argentina though; If they win the final, Brazil will never recover from this - One of their greatest rivals winning the World Cup in their country.

Brazil, on the other hand, still have "the Commiseration Cup" to play for - but I'd doubt it'll do them, or their fans, any satisfaction.

The only time I really watch futbol / soccer / football is when the World Cup is going on. I was into the whole #IBelieveThatWeWillWin thing. It was catchy. I was heart broken when we lost. Just ask this guy:

play4fun :

I might have to pick a MLS team to start watching because soccer is a lot more interesting that I had originally thought. If I do end up watching soccer, I might end up picking the Seattle Sounders, as they would be considered my home team.

So far, I've been right on the final 4 and the final 2 competitors for the World Cup, though, I was not expecting that slaughter by Germany against Brazil, goodness gracious. Anyways, my final prediction would be that Germany would beat out Argentina.

thing1 : Eh, MLS might not be the most interesting league to watch, as you might have notice, the US is kinda behind on the popularity of the sport as opposed to countries in Europe and South America. Some of the better American players (including Tim Howard) play in leagues outside of the US. If you want to be more into the sport, keeping up with those leagues outside of the country would be more exciting. You might even recognize some of the players' names from the World Cup itself.

play4fun : Well, the reason why I said I would follow the MLS is because I could actually watch their games on TV. And honestly, I am not really big on sports from other countries unless it it the Olympics or something like the World Cup.

Welp, that was a disappointing ending to the Brazilians. On their home field, they didn't even make the top 3 in the World Cup. Netherlands schooled them (not as bad as Germany) for third place. Not a surprise to me, really, they always seem like the weakest out of the final 4. Tomorrow is the Final! I am calling Germany to beat Argentina, but I am hoping for some serious battle with these two super powers.
