I think Starfox is Nintendo's unluckiest franchise due to all the dumb decisions made through the series' history. The rushed transformation of Rare's N64 game Dinosaur Planet into Starfox Adventures by Shigeru Miyamoto's request is (in)famous nowadays, but nobody talks about Starfox 2's cancellation - which was, IMO, one of the worst decisions in the history of videogaming!
I'm not a big fan of the SNES, but I have to admit this game is seriously awesome. The gameplay is fast and fluid with an amazing blend of completely different genres (who ever thought that a real-time-three-dimensional-strategic-shoot 'em up would work so well?), the graphics are truly a sight to behold thanks to Argonaut's Super-FX 2/M.A.R.I.O. 2 chip and the soundtrack (which is what I tend to dislike the most in SNES games) is amazing, with some fantastic compositions and instruments. There's also other small details I love about the game: the sprite-art/character design (which is infinitely superior to SF64's blocky polygonal/digitized Muppets), the darker/edgier tone (also present in it's predecessor, A.K.A. the original timeline) and the epic enemy design (the dragons, man! THE DRAGONS!). The first Starfox was revolutionary for it's time, but if SF2 was released back in 1995, it would put it's prequel (and even SF64) to shame in every aspect and would become one of the best-selling and most well-known games of all time, instead of just a curiosity and an insight into a different future for the franchise.
Oh, and that pre-titlescreen intro with the Mirage Dragon attacking the Cornerian armada is PURE CONCENTRATED AWESOME.
P.S.: I've heard Starfox Command for the DS can almost be considered a re-make of this game, since it shares the multiple-character system and the RTS elements. Is that true? If so, is it any good?
