Zero and Mega Man X are back to save the Earth in this adventure.

Story: 7
The story is nothing really new to the X series but here we go. Sigma is back, were you really suspecting somebody else? Sigma has hired a new reploid called Dynamo. Sigma tells Dynamo to activate a lifeless space colony and flood it with the Sigma Virus. Sigma than reveals his plan. Sigma causes the colony to change course due to the virus to crash into earth. It is hinted in the plot and manual that Sigma talked to the ghost of Dr. Wily. Sigma makes the statement after talking to an old professor I know how to awaken Zero. Sigma has another plan. Sigma plans to infect Zero by spreading the virus so Zero will become a maverick, which we know in future games he failed on that plan. Anyway, Sigma than goes to Earth to challenge X and Zero to a duel. Sigma loses on purpose as his main goal was to spread the virus. He then tells Dynamo to attack X and Zero when he tells him too. X and Zero must race the clock to destroy the space colony and to save the earth from Sigma. Okay nothing wrong with this plot. The plot does have some action to it. However, if anybody has played other X games this is pretty much the same plot used all over again. In X1 Sigma spread his Virus, X2 he spreads the Virus, and even in X3 he uses Doppler to spread the virus. Also the plot of him using Zero is nothing new either. In Mega Man X2 he tried to use Zero to spread the virus but he failed. As X was able to get all of Zero's Parts in X2. Zero in X2 attacks Sigma and helps X stop the spread of the virus. So yeah reusing the same plot over again kind of hurts the rating. It would have been nice had they used some creativity. I have to wonder were they rushing to get this game out.

Graphics: 8
The graphics in this game were decent. The backgrounds were nicely done. I really like the Jungle (Axel Rose's) stage it was very colorful. Volt Kraken's stage was nicely done too the way the sparks and lightening shine on the floor was nicely done. The Skiver's stage was also good with the clouds moving in the background. So Capcom was making sure the backgrounds were awesome in this game. Okay the controls in this game were good but not as good as other games. Zero plays real smooth and he is the one I mostly use in this game. X feels sluggish at times compared to Zero. I really do not know why that is. I also found in the Sigma stage there was a little Lag and that stage just seemed really sluggish. This game had good graphics but not as good as X2's X3's and X4's. In fact X6 had decent graphics. Because of that I still give the graphics on X5 a good rating but it could have been better especially when it comes to the controls.

Sound: 8
X5 also had a good sound but there were a few problems. The themes in this stage were for the most part pretty good. Axel Rose's Jungle Stage, the Skiver's theme and Volt Kraken's theme are my favorites in this game. Sometimes when I am playing those stages I will just pause the game and listen to the music. The enemies also have good sounds to let players know they mean business. X's buster sounds great. Zero's Saber also sounds good. In X4 I wrote how hearing He and Ha got annoying, in this game they toned the volume of that down. The fortress stages do have a tingle to them. I do not like tingles and it also sounds like there is a lot of static. In Sigma's first stage there is lots of static. I do not know if that was on purpose or what? If it was on purpose it was very annoying. If it wasn't on purpose than it confirms what I said this game was rushed. So the static kind of hurt the rating on this one. I still give it a good score but it is only because of the stage themes.

Addicteveness and Depth: 7
Okay this game does have some replay value. Sometimes it is fun just to pick a character either X or Zero and play the game through just using that character. You do not have to do that like you did back in X4 but it just makes the game more fun. Also Zero can talk to Dr. Light in this game unlike previous Mega Man X games. But I found this game did not have as much replay value for me like X2, 3, 6 and 4. It just seemed like a few things were missing in this game. As for depth, well the depth is pretty much standard but nothing really new. Now they are two types of Armor to get in this game so that adds something you have the Falcon armor and the Gae armor to collect parts for. They are a few reploids to rescue in this game but not like X6. The sub tanks, Light Capsules, and health bar increases are carry overs from previous games. So that was really nothing new there. However, you do have to search for all of those items. Sometimes you have to bring a different character to get an item. This game does take a while to beat. But it is mainly because of the long stages (more on that below)

Difficulty: 9
This game was a nightmare at times oh how it had its bad spots. The difficulty in this game is about the same not matter who you use. Zero is a close range fighter, and X is a long range fighter. This game had lots of traps galore. The floors are covered a lot with spikes, sometimes you have to use a cycle to get across and hope you do not crash into a wall. Also they even brought the death lasers back from the classical series ugh. The bosses were also hard especially in Sigma's fortress. Now the biggest thing that makes this game difficulty besides traps is enemy placement. So many times enemies will swamp you, corner you and hit you from behind. Unlike other X games when they hit you they do a lot of damage so that is a problem. So often I have found myself getting trapped and just hit so many times. Another thing that is a huge problem is when the Sigma Virus appears. Often times they appear in groups of 3 or more not just one. X if he gets infected he will lose health. If Zero gets infected he can turn more powerful for a while. Item placement was hard in this game as it requires a lot of effort to get to the items. In addition, sometimes it is hard to hear when enemies are sneaking up on you due to the static in the fortress stages. When I rated the difficulty of this game I compared it the game it reminded me the most of. That game was Mega Man X6. X6 was difficult in a special way because it required skill, creativity and just a lot of luck. This one tests your skills too but the static in the fortress stages makes it more irritating because you can't hear enemy shots that well. Still, this was a tough game and it really shines on difficulty.

Overall: 8.1
Mega Man X5 is a good game but it does have a few issues with it. What makes X5 good is the awesome soundtrack of the Mavericks. I really liked the music. The backgrounds were good, and getting to alternate characters was also nice. However, I will be honest, I do not play this one as much as some of the other X games. My favorites were 2,3, 6 and 4. I felt like 5 had so much potential. But it would have been better had they used a different or more creative plot. The plot in this game was the same as in other games. Also the static in this game in the fortress stages could get annoying. I mentioned I wondered if this game was rushed. Here is were I was going with that thought. Mega Man X5 came out in 2001 I believe. The first Play Station was slowly loosing its status as top game system. In 2001 the Second Play Station came out. Games started being made for it instead of  Plat Station One. I really think Capcom was trying to get this game out quick  Thus that is why it was good but not as sharp as some of the other games. Now is this a good game, yes it is a good game it just has a few issues. Thus I give it a good rating of 8.1 but it could have been better. If you have no problems with the negatives than you will find this game to be okay. If you play as Zero than you really do not have to worry about the controls. So would I recommend this game here is my advice. If you haven't played X games before than by all means play this game it is fun and a good game. If you have played X games then this game can still be fun even though it is nothing new. I liked how in the 6th game how they tried to offer something new they just kind of messed the plot up in that one, which I talk about in that game's review. I hope if you play this game that you will enjoy it.
