Finish him and feel the power of Shao Khan. No way feel the power of Mister Tornado. Okay in all seriousness today I am going to be reviewing Mortal Kombat Trilogy now Fight!.

Plot: 8
Okay I was debating on how I was going to analysis the plot of Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Trilogy is just basically a combination of the first three Mortal Kombat games. So I am going to start off with the basics. There is a dark world called the Outworld it is ruled by a vicious, mean, dictator emperor by the name of Shao Khan. Khan often travels to other realms taking souls. The elders warned that travel to the Outworld through Earth also known as Earthrealm would be possible if certain levels of energy were right. To help stabilize the forces the elders decided the fate of the Earth will be decided through an annual tournament. That is pretty much how Mortal Kombat came to be in the story lines. In the first Mortal Kombat the basic plot is that Khan's evil sorcerer Shang Tsung is trying to find a way to take over the Earthrealm (Earth) via the tournament. Tsung fails in his mission. In the second game Khan is enraged that his plan was foiled by the Earth Warriors. He decides to host another tournament with the fate of the Earth being decided. This time though Khan's goons enter hoping to foil the Earth Warriors plan of saving the Earth. In the third game Khan is even madder that his plans were foiled so he resurrects dead warriors. According to the game manual some of his warriors have been dead for over 10,000 years. Seriously, does Khan not age .He also finally invades Earth taking souls. Radian chooses Earth's best fighters to battle Khan. Now, I know that was long going into all of that. But as I stated Trilogy is a mix of all three games. So to understand that I felt like it was needed to revisit the plots that lead up to Trilogy occurring. For fighting games I think the plots on Mortal Kombat games were pretty decent. You have the forces of good versus evil in these games. Also what I like is each fighter good or bad has a story to their character. I will not post the story's here because well that would be playing spoiler and we cannot have that can we? I think the story lines have creativity that is for sure as well as a little bit of mystery to them. So they deserve a very good rating. On the other hand, had the player not played any past Mortal Kombat games they could get lost in the plot. Trilogy just tells about how that the elders knew travel between the Outworld and Earthrealm would be possible. Thus, that kind of brings the rating down somewhat. Still, at the end of the day I give this plot a solid 8 out of 10.

Graphics: 9
The graphics in Trilogy pretty much rocked in this game. The backgrounds are very colorful. The ones that have a dark theme are used to represent the darkness of the Outworld. It kind of gives you a creepy feeling. I thought the stages to be remastered looked even better than they did when they were on 16 bit systems. The sprints are nicely done especially when a fighter gets knocked down into a pit. The way they move their legs when they are falling was a nice touch. Also the sprints of the fighters and their moves is done very well. These are fighting stages so it is also no surprise the game does not have any lags. In addition, the controls were nicely done. I have found that most of the players controls are very smooth even when they are doing their moves. However, a few of the fighters do seem a little bit sluggish at times. I do not know if that is because they are supposed to be slow or what? But some of them do just feel sluggish compared to others. Therefore, that brings the rating down just a hair. Still, I give the graphics of this game a solid 9 out of 10.

Sound: 9
The sound in this game was also nicely done. The sound the players make when they are getting hit is priceless. Some of the fighters will moan and groan when they are getting beat up. In addition, some will even scream when fatalities are being done. The makers of this game really wanted to make the player think the fighters are in pain. The music in this game is not to shabby either. Some of the stages have a dark creepy feeling to them to let the player know they are fighting in an evil place. Other fighting stages have an upbeat tempo that kind of lets the player know they are in the Earthrealm. Also, the fighters' moves some of them are very nicely done such as fireballs, super kicks, combos, and even lightening bolts. The only problem I have with the sound is there are a few times I thought the sound was getting static. I do not know if that is because the stages were converted from 16 bit to the 64 bit or more? The static though due to all the moaning and groaning is not really that noticeable. Thus, due to the static sounding I still give the sound a good rating. After, all it is a fighting game so I did not really expect very good sound as in other games I have played.

Addictiveness and Depth:7
This was hard for me to rate for this very reason. This is a fighting game, there are no items to collect, no secret stages and no mini quest to go on like they are in other games. Still I think Trilogy does have good replay value. They give you several fighters to chose from and each one has their own story. So it is often fun to pick a different fighter and to see that fighters story line. Also each fighter has all of their moves they even throw in a few new ones. The fighters after winning two fights against the same fighter can either do a fatality or turn into an animal. That was kind of funny in a way fighters turning into animals to defeat their opponents. The game depth is mostly due to all the choices you can chose while picking a fighter. Moreover, there are different difficulty stages the player can chose from. I often will pick different difficulty levels. Therefore, all of that adds some depth. However, as I stated this is a fighting game so the player does not have to go through stages or collect times. That in my opinion is what keeps me from rating this higher. On the other hand this is a mix of the first three games, and it is a fighting game. I give the replay value and depth rating a good 7 out of 10.

Difficulty: 6
I really had a hard time analyzing the difficulty level of this game and here is why. The player can chose their difficulty as with most fighting games. I want to think the difficulty levels are Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, and Expert. I am not sure but I want to think those are the 4 difficulty levels this game gives you. If you pick the beginner as difficulty, which I recommend if you are new to these types of games, than you do not have to face that many fighters. If you pick Novice it starts getting more difficult. Now, if you pick intermediate or Expert ugh be prepared for pain. Picking those two levels means you will have a difficult path. Fighters' attacks hurt more, they are more fighters to face, more endurance levels and then Khan himself. So yeah, you are choosing your own fate. I did find no matter what difficulty level you chose they are certain fighters that will spam you with attacks. Some of the fighters are difficulty that will make you frustrated. In fact, some require special techniques, creativity, skill and luck to beat. Another thing is even if you lose in a fight you can hit continue and the game gives you a chance to chose another fighter. Because the game still likes to put you against fighters that attack either way that bumps up the difficulty rating. On the other hand you can chose you difficulty level. In conclusion, I give this game a difficulty rating of 6 out of 10. But understand if you chose intermediate or expert than the difficulty can easily be a 10 out of 10. I also compared this game to other fighting games I have played mostly Street Fighter and even in Street Fighter you can adjust the difficulty. Streets of rage is a beat em up scroll along game and it has stages which are long so really couldn't compare this game to that.

Overall: 9
This game was hard to assign an overall rating for. First of all, to get the plot the player has to go with what the game gives you. If you have played MK games like me, you pretty much know that MK Trilogy is just a combination of the past 3 plots. Second, the game gives you the ability to chose your difficulty. Third, this is a fighting game so there are no stages like in a Mario or Donkey Kong game. What makes Trilogy a great game are these factors. The first factor is it is a combination of all of the first three MK games. The stages are random and can be any stage from I to III. Second, this game gives you every fighter that has appeared in the first 3 games to chose from. In addition, they also give you a few new fighters that made their being playable debut in this game. The sound and graphics in this game were nicely done despite the negatives I pointed out. So giving so many choices, and this being a combination of the first three MK games I gave this game a solid rating of 9.0. For the problems in this game they are minor problems so to most players it is not a big deal. I also considered that some of the problems could have been created by converting the games to new systems. What I mean is the first 3 MK games were for 16 bit systems the SNES and Sega systems. The Sony Playstation and Nintendo 64 use at least a 64 bit system. So I would suspect a few minor problems due to that fact. As far as recommending this game. If you liked MK games than by all means play this game and have fun. It is a fun game to play for reasons I mentioned in my analysis. Now, I do know some parents or even some players do not like a lot of blood and gore in their games. If you are one of them players, which I am not making fun of and I do not mean to offend, than this game is probably not for you. MK games were infamous for their blood and gore and were some of the first games to be known for that. If your that type of player I recommend playing street fighter instead because it is more family friendly. But if blood and gore do not bother you than play this game and enjoy.
