Mega Man is back for round 4

Story: 9
The story starts off with a nice intro. It starts off by telling us how Mega Man became the fighting robot he is. It goes on to say how Rock was a lab assistant robot to Dr. Light and Dr. Wily. Dr. Wily took the robots and the tried for world denomination. Rock having a sense of justice allowed Light to convert him into Mega Man. Okay that was a very nice intro. If anybody hasn't played Mega Man games the story gives you a background of how the series started. Okay, back to the story. Mega Man shattered Dr. Wily's plans for world domination three times in the past. However a new scientists named Dr. Cossack  has sent 8 new powerful robot masters. Mega Man heads for the battle again. Okay in the manual it says Dr. Cossack sent Dr. Light a letter. Saying he was tired of seeing Dr. Light get credit and wanted the world to know he was a top robot designer and to conquer the world he has invented 8 robots. Capcom was really getting creative in this story. Players who did not know any better would think that Mega Man is going up against a new enemy. Capcom only makes reference to Wily being in telling about his past plans.  However, the only thing is the manual gives away the spoiler. If anybody has played Mega Man games they know that Dr. Wily writes letters like that. So it was kind of obvious to the regulars who play Mega Man Dr. Wily is still around. However, if a player is new to the series and this is their first game the plot is well written they would not be able to pick up on that. So Mega Man 4 has a good plot.

Graphics: 8
The Graphics in Mega Man 4 are good. Ring Man's space background with planets in the back ground is a nice touch. Dive Man's underwater stage is very good and makes the player think they are in an ocean. Pharaoh man's stage is nice as it looks like a desert. Mega Man 4 introduced the ability for Mega Man to charge his buster shot into a powerful blast. Here is were I think the graphics suffered just a little bit. The charged up buster does not look like it would be powerful. It looks like a more powerful stream and it is green. Mega Man 5's buster was powerful and what you would expect for a charged shot. When the player fires a charged shot it kind of looks like the sprints get a little bit out of whack. Also the rush Jet controls were just a little sluggish. Mega Man 3 had the best Rush Jet controls. But they were still good so that was not too big of a deal.   The sprints of the characters are for the most part pretty solid. I also found that the controls in this game were smooth as they did not feel stiff or anything not including the use of the Rush Jet. There was really only one part were the game lagged and it was were I would suspect a lag to occur. The scrolling stage in the Cossack stage seems like it lagged just a little. However, this was an 8 bit game so I would suspect that. Thus, the graphics in this game were pretty solid overall.

Sound: 8
The sound in this game was pretty good. Pharaoh Man's music, Dive Man's music, The Cossack stages and even Dr. Wily's stages (yes did you expect somebody else) have very memorable music. Thus music in this game may not have been like Mega Man's 7, 5, IV, V or 3 but it is still very good music. I like how a lot of the tracks are upbeat. The way the enemies sound are nice too. Some of the enemies attacks explode when they shoot at you or even after you defeated them so that was a nice touch to the series. The only problem with the sound is the buster charging. When charging the buster it seems like there is a tingle. Some players that would not bother. However, after seeing Mega Man 5's buster and how smooth and powerful it sounded. Mega Man 4's does not sound smooth while charging. Mega Man 4's buster also does not really sound like a charged shot. The charged shot sounds just a little bit better than regular shots. Compared to Mega Man 5 were you had that powerful sound. However, this was the first game that you charge your shots so that probably has a lot to do with it right there. I give the sound in this game a good solid rating take away the buster sound and you have a very good sounding game to play.

Addictiveness and Depth: 9
Mega Man 4 is a fun game to play it is one of my favorites. I often enjoy playing this game. I really think what helps is the stages can be revisited. So if you do not have a special weapon needed to get an item do not worry. You can go back when you have the special weapon. Now I will be honest in other Mega Man games I do like Mega Man 7, 5, V and IV better. But for me this game is up there with Mega Man 3 which in my Mega Man 3 review I said it was a very good game and had  high replay value. Mega Man 4 does not really change. What makes Mega Man 4 so addictive is its depth. The depth in this game is big. You have the 8 robot master stages, the Cossack stages and Dr. Wily. So you have to earn your way to victory which I really like. But that adds depth. Unlike the first two Mega Man games this one is not shot like they were. Mega Man 4 also had new things. First of all there are two adapters in this stage to find and they are well hidden. The fake bad guy was new so that added more levels that were fun. So Mega Man 4 had a lot going on in it, which is what makes this game so fun to play. Mega Man 4 is not a game that one can finish in a short time. It takes time and patience to beat this game.

Difficulty: 8
Mega Man 4 is challenging there are 4 robot masters that are difficult in this game. Pharaoh Man, Dive Man, Bright Man, and Drill man are very difficult and hard to beat in this game. The stages are long and have several obstacles in them. The enemy placement in this game is huge. Mega Man 4 had a lot more enemies compared to the earlier Mega Man games. Enemies just love to shoot at you, knock you into the pits or spikes. Stages that have a lot of enemies that want to do this are: Dive Man and Ring Man's stage. Some of the enemies have small hit boxes on them which if your ridding rush or jumping from one platform to another that can be a problem. Dr. Wily's stages are also very difficult and very hard to beat. Dr. Wily's last boss battle can drive you crazy. However, here is why the difficulty does not get a 9 or a 10. Dr. Cossack's stages are pretty easy. The Cossack bosses are not to hard at all. Last time I played this game I did not in the Cossack levels until the scrolling one, but that was me just not paying attention. The scrolling Cossack stage is really the only hardest Cossack fortress stage. So the Cossack stages keep me from giving this game a 9 or a 10 in difficulty. However, players be warned if this is your first time playing this game be prepared to be challenged because this game is difficult. However, it is the type of difficulty that makes it fun. It really tests your skills unlike the first Mega Man game. The first Mega Man game was difficult because of the glitches in it. As I stated this one like Mega Man 3, 7, V and IV requires skills to master to beat this game.

Overall: 9.1
Okay I will be honest I do like Mega Man 7, 5, V, and IV a little bit better. Mega Man 4 is tied with Mega Man 3 for me. However, this was a great game and it is one of the all time great NES games in my opinion.  I really liked how Capcom was trying something new here by making players thing that they had a new bad guy. Yes, it was obvious Wily was behind it all. But just the thought of a new plot with a twist late in the game was something new. The graphics are very solid. The only problems I had with the graphics were the buster shot and Rush Jet.  However, as I mentioned those were very minor.  The sound of this game really rocked it is just that buster sound could have been better. Mega Man 4 has a lot to offer among gamers and Mega Man players. I also like how you can revisit stages as I mentioned that adds replay value. I remember getting this game a couple of years after it came out. It was on clearance on a store that I got it from. I really had fun with this game. Here it is 2014 and I still enjoy playing this great game. If you want a fun game in the Mega Man series look no further. Would I recommend this game. I can say that I would recommend this game it is a solid game.
