Darkwing Duck makes his presence known on the NES

Story: 8
For those that do know know Darkwing Duck is a crime fighter created by Disney. Okay on to the plot.. F.O.W.L CEO Steelbeak has hired a lot of Darkwing Duck enemies to use in a major crime scheme. Crime has run rampant in the city. S.H.U.S.H Director Hoover hires Darkwing Duck to bring these criminals into justice and restore order in the city. Darkwing Duck sets out to clean up crime. Okay, the plot is basic and it is short. However, I thought the plot was well written. If anybody knows anything about Darkwing Duck this is the type of plot what was shown in the cartoons. The player knows what the plot is and what they are going up against. In a way it feels like a Mega Man plot. Here is were I am going with this. In most Mega Man plots the player knows they are going against Dr. Wily. In this game the player knows who the main bad guy is just like Mega Man game.

Graphics: 8
The Graphics in this game play like a Mega Man game and it should. For those that do not know Capcom used the same graphics in Darkwing Duck as they did in the Mega Man games. How the lights flash on the bridge stage is nicely done. Also how the moon appears in the background is a nice touch. The Jungle stage is really good with the waterfalls and plant life. Darkwing Duck had very good graphics. The controls are not bad either. However there were a few times were I thought the controls were a little stiff and sluggish. I wonder if this game was rushed in some spots. There really isn't any lag in the game that I noticed. So, despite Capcom reusing Mega Man Graphics they turned out to be pretty good. The only thing that hurts the rating is the stiff controls that seem to appear in certain stages.

Sound: 8
The sound of this game is pretty good. A lot of the stages had nice music. The Bridge stage, Jungle Stage (Bushroot's Stage) Mega Volt's stage all had nice tunes to them. Darkwing's gun also has a nice sound to it. I also like how the thunder weapon sounds like a lighting bolt.  That was creative on Capcom's part. The only thing is sometimes in the stages there is a little bit of tingling going on. I again wonder if this game was rushed since it game out when the NES was past its peak.

Addictiveness; 7
I remember buying this game when it first came out. I thought it was a fun game. I felt like I was playing a Mega Man game. For me that is additive I really like Mega Man games. The games stages are also fun to play. This is a fun game. The only thing is it is a short game and only has 7 stages.

Depth: 5
Darkwing Duck really suffers on its depth. While this is a fun game it is a short game. The player only has 6 stages to go through and then the final boss stage for a total of 7 stages. The only items really to collect are the different special weapon, arrow, thunder, and heavy duty. The stages though are long so that is were the rating gets a middle rating. I feel like they could have added more stages or included more items. in this game.

Difficulty: 6
The game is moderately difficult. What makes this game have somewhat difficulty is the enemy placement. Just like Mega Man games you can get hit a lot in this game if you are not careful. Enemies just love it seems to gang up on you and send you into the pits. Also here is something else that adds a little bit of difficulty some of the enemies take quite a few shots to knock out. Now as for the bosses I thought with long stages the bosses would be tough. There is really only one boss here that is difficult and that is Bushroot. I remember from the cartoon how Mega Volt was a very tough bad guy to beat. So when I first played this I was expecting him and Bushroot to give me the most trouble. Mega Volt was pretty easy in this game and that was disappointing to me. The other bosses are not that hard to beat. The final boss Steal Beak was actually pretty easy. So while Darkwing Duck has a few trouble spots the best I felt like I could do was give it a middle of the road rating. The enemy placement is what makes this game moderate in difficulty.

Overall: 8
Darkwing Duck is a fun game. I had fun playing it since it plays like a Mega Man game. The graphics for the most part are good and so is the sound so that is what boosts this rating. However, the bad thing is thee are times were I wonder as I referred to if this game was not rushed. It seems like with only 7 stages, and the bosses not being difficult. I just wonder if they were trying to get it out for the NES quickly kind of like Mega Man 6. Mega Man 6 was a good game overall but it felt rushed in places. The NES was already past its peak when this game came out. A lot of games after 1991 were being made for the new and very popular SNES. The depth of this game was somewhat disappointing. I will be honest I expected the bosses to be more like the cartoon shows were Darkwing had to get creative or dangerous as he liked to have said to beat them. Bushroot was the only one that met my expectations. So this is a decent game despite its flaws. Would I recommend this game. I would say I would recommend it because it is a fun game despite the negatives. If you are familiar with Mega Man games you will notice this is similar.
