TITLE: SONIC CD                  SYSTEM: SEGA CD                                        REVIEW BY: GOLGO 14

                 SONIC'S FINEST HOUR

Owning a Sega CD back in the day at first, seemed really cool."Hey look motion video" people would say as you rocket down a tunnel in Sewer Shark. But for the most part, upon closer inspection of these full motion videogames you quickly became aware they offered ZERO gameplay and became the cancer that would eventually infect the Sega CD's library. In fact most of the games were just Sega Genesis games with better music/sound interlaced with cinemas in between boards. Then it happened...Sonic CD happened and offered what I consider to be the King of all Sonic games...
LET'S GET TO IT, TIME TO REVIEW!

GRAPHICS: 10  The visual design has exactly what you're eyeballs love. Flamboyant, abstract plant life that spin and animate with life that spread over the checkered landscapes brimming with lush waterfalls, adorable mechanical creatures like ladybugs with wheels and tiny piranhas that attack you from underneath log bridges.True 3-D scaling pixels that define each bonus stage are also present and every stage has layers upon layers of parallax scrolling giving a real sense of depth in every stage. The real star though is the variety the developers implemented into each stage due to the time travelling mechanic(more on that later)that gives each stage actually 3 variations in total. It's just amazing when you travel back in time(or in the future)on the stage you were just on to notice what the stage looked like in the prehistoric time or in the distant future. Everything will either be changed or altered in a new creative way giving more meaning and character to all the stages that whiz by in the blink of an eye.
GOOD JOB TEAM SONIC!!!!!

SOUND/MUSIC: 10 The soundtrack(s)is incredible! You can actually select the original Japanese music or the new American recording and away you go! I actually really enjoy BOTH.The first time I booted up the game it was the American one so I will speak of this one only. After the game loads a really cool Anime cut scene begins with Sonic flying across the ground then the music starts..then this surprising female vocalist starts to sing:" Sonic Boom, Sonic Boom, trouble keeps you running faster...save the planet from disaster" At the time i was just a wee boy and it kinda pumped me up,but now I really think it is very cheesy in the best way(Like a Bruce Campbell flick). As for the rest of the soundtrack..it's like Christmas for my ears! Much like the game design itself, the soundtrack will ALWAYS change depending if you are in the future or past. The composer went the distance here and when you are in the Prehistoric era there is a lot of tribal instruments utilized like bongos and such, when you are in the future there is more of an upbeat vibe goin' down, with electronic synth and guitar riffs throughout. The sound effects are equally as polished and thoughtful, such as when you time travel ahead, a really cool female robot voice announces 'future" the second you appear. The sound of Sonic jumping, bopping and that dreaded "ring loss" noise is all here and better than ever!

ADDICTIVENESS: 10 Sonic CD screams replayability even just to see all the variations each stage offers.By far, (as mentioned earlier)the most unique feature is the Time Travelling aspect of the game.It is such a blast to launch Sonic ( just like 'The Delorian' from Back to The Future) into time and EXPORE!.The play control is the best it has ever been , with Sonic accurately reacting to my spin dash prompt or stopping on a dime after a huge loop to loop, everything feels tight, responsive and most importantly FUN.The stages themselves are the best they've ever been, designed with that perfect balance of lightening quick speed and careful, precise, platforming that has been a staple of the Sonic franchise since inception.

STORY:1 I feel when Sega started Characterizing Sonic and Tails with really bad voice acting and trying to add sooo many unappealing characters(minus KnucKles of course) and story the Sonic games started to take a nose dive. Just give us what we want Sega...gameplay!

CONCLUSION: This is how I will always remember Sonic. To me,the many Sonic games that came after, while highly ambitious, never matched the drive, the focus and creativity the developers
pumped into Sonic CD which is something I will have to live with.I will always hold a special place for Sonic CD AND THANK YOU Sonic Team for all of the great memories!

OVERALL 10/1O SONIC BOOM, SONIC BOOOM!!!
