Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green Chapter Five: The Pewter City Gym “Wow!” I said with fascination. “Neat story, Yellow!” Yellow smiled. “Thank you.” He got up and stretched his arms. “Pika and I are going to walk around the city for a little while. See you guys later!” We waved. Blue and Leaf said they were going to pick up a few items at the PokéMart. After they left, I decided that I was going to challenge the Pewter City Gym Leader – and win. “Let’s go Charmy!” I said to my Charmander, who was more enthusiastic than ever. I dashed into a building with a red roof, which I assumed was the Pokémon Gym. “I’m here to challenge the Gym Leader!” I screamed. Everyone stared at me as if I was a mad person. Some people next to what appeared to be injured Pokémon frowned at me. I just made a “what?” face. Then it hit me. I was in the Pokémon Center! “Oops!” I apologized, embarrassed. “I’m awfully sorry!” I side-stepped my way over to the door, and was about leave until I heard a woman’s voice call out to me from behind. “Hey!” I stopped. Had I caused that much trouble? I turned around slowly. “Y-yes?” Then she smiled. “Would you like to rest your Pokémon? They look tired.” I sighed in relief. Then I looked at Charmy and Pidgey. They widened their eyes and made a “pwease?” look. “Yes. Yes please!” She took my Pokémon and put them in the machine. She looked happy. “Alright then! And don’t worry, because it’s completely free!” Well, that sure helps. “Thank you, miss.” She nodded. “You’re welcome! And you can call my cousins and I Nurse Joy! We hope to see you again!” I got my Pokémon back and walked out of the automatic door. “Time to challenge the local Gym Leader!” With Charmy at my side, and Pidgey on my shoulder, I ran to another building. I was really hoping it was the Gym. This time, just in case, I made a more subtle entrance. “Hello? Is this the Pokémon Gym?” I was greeted by a friendly brunette in a white top and a short blue skirt. She smiled. “You got that right! If you wish to battle the Gym Leader, Brock, I’m afraid you’ll have to wait a while. He already has a challenger right now. I’m sure they’re almost done, though.” With that, I sat down in the waiting room until the fluorescent light above the locked door turned from red to green. About five minutes later, I almost fell out my seat when I heard what was probably the loudest “YES!” ever. The fluorescent light was now a bright green, and I began walking towards the now unlocked door. As I was about to walk through, I was knocked down by the person who had apparently defeated Brock. I rubbed my aching head and looked up to find a familiar face. “Blue? I thought you were going with Leaf to pick up some stuff at the local PokéMart!” Blue laughed. “Psych! That’s a funny lie I told you. Even more hilarious that you fell for it, Red – literally!” Then, he waved the Boulder Badge he had won in my face and walked away, laughing. “Grrr…” I got up and went through the door. “Brock!” I said with anticipation. “I challenge you to a battle!” I firmly tightened my grip on the Pokéball with Pidgey in it. Brock turned around. “Alright, kid! I accept your challenge! Be warned, though, I won’t go easy on you.” I smirked. “Good.” Brock called out his Onix. Then I sent out Pidgey; Charmy would have been at a huge disadvantage, as Fire Types’ weaknesses include Rock Types. “Pidgey!” it cried, turning around, facing the towering Onix in front of it. “C’mon, Pidgey, let’s get him with a Peck attack!” Pidgey flew up high, circling Onix, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. “Now!” Pidgey dove down, its beak twisting like a drill. Then – Bam! Onix had lost nearly half of its hit points! “Wow!” I said with a huge grin. “Could you have learned Drill Peck? Awesome!” Pidgey looked happy, and that got it more enthusiastic than ever. Brock looked impressed. “Alright, Onix, use Iron Tail and don’t miss!” I signaled Pidgey to dodge it, making a waving gesture with my hands. Pidgey wasn’t quick enough, however, and Onix’s rock-hard tail slammed against it with force. “Pidgey!” It was okay, though, because it looked ready to use another move. “Okay, Pidgey, Drill Peck once more!” Pidgey flew up once again. “Do it!” Pidgey dove down. “Pid…” Onix made an “aw, snap…” face. “GEY!!!” Then another rattling explosion occurred, shaking the battlefield. I put my arm in front my face, sheltering my head from all the smoke and pebbles headed my way. Then, everything cleared up. Brock and I both stood there for a moment. Then, the referee held up his flag. “Onix is unable to battle! Therefore, Red is the winner!” “Alright!” I said running to Pidgey and holding it in my arms. “We did it buddy! And, looks like you grew a few levels! You caught up with Charmy! Great job!” Then I returned it to its Pokéball. Brock called back his Onix and walked over to me. He put his hand on my shoulder. “Good work, kid! It did take you longer to defeat me than that boy who showed up before you, but you and your Pokémon seem more synced. You deserve this.” Then, he handed the Boulder Badge to me. “Awesome!” I said. “My first badge! Thank you.” He waved goodbye, and I walked out of the Gym. A few blocks down, I saw Blue and Leaf sitting on a bench. “Pfft. Took you long enough.” scoffed Blue. “Oh, hey Red!” said Leaf. “Looks like you defeated Brock, too.” she said, pointing at the Boulder Badge I had temporarily pinned to my red vest. Then I put it in my Badge Case. “Yeah. Why don’t you go?” Leaf sat back down. “I’m just waiting for Yellow. He said he went to challenge Brock now.” I decided to go to the Pokémon Center in the meantime. Pidgey did take quite the hit back there. “We’re coming with you.” Blue and Leaf said in unison. I met up with Nurse Joy again, who, as always, patiently took my Pokémon and healed them. Then, the three of us sat in the lobby, waiting for Yellow.
