Philosophy everywhere!

Okay, back to the question. What role does honor play in (today's) society?

I personally think there is a lot of honor in society today, and even in the past too. High respected members of certain cultures, kingdoms, etc. always have high honor, since they have the highest role in their establishment. Nowadays, the President is the high respected authority in many countries, but we do not necessarily think about honor then. We think more about power...the President of the United States is one of the most powerful men in the world...he controls our army, and he is trying his best to lead this country (with or without the help of Congress, who seem to always be fighting against one another).
As for honor's role, I would say being bestowed a high honorable job makes people more criticizing...his he/she fit for the job? I bet I can do better. But honor is a great reward among people, being able to earn it will most definitely boost your morale, and really make you happy and sometimes respected due to how you may have received such prestige and high accolades in the first place. Take Leonidas and his band of 300 Spartans. They vowed to give the Athenians enough time to muster up a counter-attack to the Persians...they fought with all their strength, and fought to the death. They fought valiantly, and if they had defeated the Persians that day (which would have probably never had happened due to the Persians' immense numbers), the 300 would most definitely have had extremely high prestige and honor due to their selfless acts of bravery on the battlefield.

Anyway, what do you think?

First thing that comes into my mind is that honor has nothing to do with politics. I think it is something more personal. And historical figures and their honor, well... history is always written by those who have been the conquerors. One mans freedom fighter is another mans terrorists. A harsh dishonorable dictator is a freedom fighter to somebody else. So who ever really had honor and who did not? It is too vague for me to really tell in a  general scale. I have my set of codes and I know when I have and have not transgressed against them.

Honour? It is a trait of the individual. Armys dont win wars by fighting with honour. Do you think they tell you they are about to start shooting? They shoot you in the back, element of surprise.
Politicians? Very few of them have honour worth a mention. They are in it for money and power.
Corporations? Usually none, look at oil companys, they kill people if it earns them more money.
People? At best estimates maybe 50% of people have honour. As soon as they get any power that soon dissapears though.

Are you aware that the film 300 is complete bull?
They were guarding a steep pass with only one route for the enemy to take. They had training, and metal armour and weapons. The persians were poorly trained, had wicker shields, and were attacking uphill.
On top of that the greeks had several thousand additional troops, not just 300.
Add to that the greeks had the bigger navy which obliterated the persian fleet, and cut off relief for the persians.

Honor is important so people can respect your views on what you really take seriously and then they could understand you as a person more deeply also Honor could be important when it comes to life decisions on some important matter and people could respect your choice
