Okay, back to the question. What role does honor play in (today's) society?
I personally think there is a lot of honor in society today, and even in the past too. High respected members of certain cultures, kingdoms, etc. always have high honor, since they have the highest role in their establishment. Nowadays, the President is the high respected authority in many countries, but we do not necessarily think about honor then. We think more about power...the President of the United States is one of the most powerful men in the world...he controls our army, and he is trying his best to lead this country (with or without the help of Congress, who seem to always be fighting against one another).
As for honor's role, I would say being bestowed a high honorable job makes people more criticizing...his he/she fit for the job? I bet I can do better. But honor is a great reward among people, being able to earn it will most definitely boost your morale, and really make you happy and sometimes respected due to how you may have received such prestige and high accolades in the first place. Take Leonidas and his band of 300 Spartans. They vowed to give the Athenians enough time to muster up a counter-attack to the Persians...they fought with all their strength, and fought to the death. They fought valiantly, and if they had defeated the Persians that day (which would have probably never had happened due to the Persians' immense numbers), the 300 would most definitely have had extremely high prestige and honor due to their selfless acts of bravery on the battlefield.
Anyway, what do you think?
