If you guys don't know, that Zelda game I reviewed a while ago called Ocarina of time has been critically acclaimed as THE greatest game of all time, The game scored perfect 10's and A's from just about every gaming review site ever made! But then 2 years later in 2000, we then got a sequel to the sleeper hit! The only thing though is, Will this sequel hold the same awesomeness and benefits that ocarina of time held? Well we are about to find out! This is the legend of Zelda majora's mask for the Nintendo 64! Alright let's do this.
Story-7/10
Like the last game, the game opens up in a very epic fashion telling us what has been going on for our hero in the past few years, The game tells us "After saving hyrule from ganon and saving Zelda, Link is off searching for a long lost friend of his" Yeah. Pretty much, So then we get young link riding on his horse in the calm and deep forest, and just then! A wicked imp like creature bumps into him and takes his ocarina! He then gives chase to the troublemaker and if you thought that was going too far, This guy then turns link into a deku like creature! It seems this guy is none other then the skull kid, a huge troublemaker in hyrule, so link then ends up in clock town, a huge downright different place then hyrule, He then meets the happy mask salesman who needs him to get back all these kooky masks of his! So anyways, I guess that is pretty much the story for now!
Gameplay-8/10
When I say that majora's mask is a Zelda adventure like no other, I really mean it! The first thing that makes this game way different from the last installments is that there is now a unique time and day feature new to the game! Because the world is called "CLOCK town" But anyways, the game plays like ocarina of time, I mean look at the freaking HUD and whatnot! When playing the game normally, link will only have such an amount of time to do things before time runs out and, the moon crashes on the earth! Link still controls like he did in Ocarina of time, You use the control stick to move, the A button to roll, The B button to attack, and you press the C buttons to launch attacks from your inventory. Another unique thing about this game is that you will now be collecting all these crazy masks, they turn you into such things like gorons, a tall hip and strict version of link with a sword to match, and Zora, which lets you swim and use these cool boomerangs. Around clock town, there is alot to do, Including cool bonus games, hidden passageways, and so on. These games are a good way to earn rupees, and I know you will agree. The game offers plenty of bosses to go around as well, Including majora's mask, a goron, and so on! Another thing about this new day and time feature is that the game will go daytime, and then once alot of time has passed, the game will turn nighttime, much like jak and daxter! Don't worry, the game is still an actual adventure game like the previous installment! Anyways, I guess that Is what I can say for the gameplay!
Graphics-8/10
As I have addressed before, the game still has the same old Ocarina of time feel, the engine, the HUD, and just about everything else! But is it a really bad thing? Well no, the game still looks pretty good and really holds up after 13 or so years, and I think that is a plus! Despite the game having a really spooky and eerie feel to it, it is no prob! All the worlds and locales you will be exploring in the game are big, vast, and bursting with things to do and collect! Now as for the characters, they still look good, but one thing though, this game does not have ganon, Zelda, or Old link! Only young link, skull kid, and a whole big cast, Kind of how the first ever sonic game for genesis only had sonic, robotnik, and the creatures of the forest! Such a simple concept, The in-game HUD is pretty self explanatory, It displays how much health you have, your magic power meter, and all the attacks you have equipped in your C-stick inventory. I really like the feel of this game! It is nice to have a change of pace again!
Sound-7/10
After 2 or so years, the soundtrack in this game is still doing pretty good like the last installment! Now because the game has an eerie feel to it, the music in some of the game's segments can get really spooky and chill, but it is no prob! But mostly that darn song that plays when you get hunted by those darn wolves in the nighttime! First time they came at me, I just passed the controller to my bro until they were gone! Now as for the sound effects, they are pretty good as well! You get some pretty typical ones like your sword slashing, but some have really gotten in my head like the one when you uncover an item, or when you do quite about anything else! It is always a plus when a game retires from something that It always and I say ALWAYS does! But it is no problem here! Not even once has the music ever gotten too repetitive for me!
Addictiveness-8/10
The game was pretty fun back then, and It still is today! You know, the thing that makes Zelda really really fun is the overall mood and feel of the adventures! The Zelda series has a very spooky and adventurous feel to it that never gets hold for me or anybody else I know! It is also really addicting collecting everything like those heart containers, the masks, and just about everything else! You see, those are a few reasons why I love Zelda in a nutshell!
Depth-9/10
This game is slightly longer and bigger then ocarina of time and here is why, Well first, the amount of stuff to collect and do has really stepped up since the last game! This game still has tons of stuff and things to do, don't get me wrong, And here they are, there are the heart containers which will give you more health, there are those kooky masks which will grant you special powers, and last but not least, the game is about 8-9 worlds long, so You have a big 8-16 hour quest waiting right in front of you! Oh yeah, the clock town itself also has a bunch of bonus games and hidden passages to find, so be prepared!
Difficulty-8/10
This game got pretty confusing and challenging for me way later on, and here are some reasons why! The first reason is that the game rarely gives you any save points or whatnot! Which means, if you collected a tons of heart containers and masks, and you then need to take a rest, well too bad! You will have to search really hard for these things! Well actually, if you are killed, then the game will ask you "Would you like to save?" But so problem solved, and another thing that makes the game harder are the bosses, and finding your way around clock town and the entire world! So be prepared!
Overall-8.3/10
I know you guys would get mad at me if I said this game is better then Ocarina of time, but to be honest, both games are really fun, challenging, and offer tons of depth! So yeah, this game is still pretty good and here you go, I gave this game a 8.3 because it is different, it offers fun, challenge, and ALOT of charm! So yeah, you guys know why the game is rated as it is! So, this has been RedHotToddy's 107th review, and see you guys later!
