As you guys probably know, I have reviewed a tiny bit of hacked pirate games throughout my time being on vizzed! I have reviewed some good ones, I have reviewed some bads ones! And I have reviewed some mediocre ones! But the one I am reviewing today is just like the somari game I have reviewed for NES, except for one small little thing, the plumber and hedgehog have switched worlds an- Oh well! You Get the point, This is sonic jam IV for the Sega genesis.
Story-N/A No story to the game! Alright, this is time for me to work my magic, so the main plot of this game is most presumably that sonic and Mario are in a huge feud over who is better, and while fighting they manage to stumble this warp machine! This machine has now caused them to switch worlds! It is now up to you to help sonic escape the mushroom kingdom!
Gameplay-7/10 Like always, sonic jam IV is a platforming game in where you control the titular character sonic the hedgehog as you run and jump through Mario inspired levels, I mean really, all the levels are ripped from Mario all-stars! As sonic, you will be jumping on goombas and koopas, eating mushrooms to gain more power, and collecting coins to increase your score and earn more lives throughout the game, the controls are pretty simple! You use the D-pad to move, you press the A button to jump, you press the B button to throw your fireballs (If you have the needed power) and the C button does not do anything at all. Each world in the game is about 4 levels long, with the 4th level being a boss fight, the bosses are fun, but a little on the easy side. It would've been funny if we actually got enemies from sonic here, but what we got was actually OK considering this is sonic in Mario's world! Anyways, that is it for the gameplay!
Graphics-7/10 For a pirated game, the graphics are self explanatory, nothing to really to write home about, The game isn't the besting looking pirate game on genesis, But at least it is better looking then all the other bad ones that I have played! But anyways, all of the worlds and locales you will be exploring are big, long, and bursting with color, even though they are taken from Mario! And as for the actual sprites, they look just fine, Sonic looks good, all the enemies look fine, and the bosses are just eh, By the way, sonic's color will change depending on if he has eaten a super mushroom, if he has not eaten one, he will be red, But if he has eaten one, then he will be blue like he always is. The HUD in the game is pretty self explanatory, It shows you your score, how many coins you have, and your amount of lives left, collecting 100 coins in the game will allow you to get more lives, if you run out of lives it is game over and you will be taken to the continue screen. Anyways, that is it for the graphics!
Sound-7/10 The music in this game is your typical genesis fare, but is that a bad thing? No! Because all of the music in this game actually sounds really good and shows that the developers put tons of work and effort into making the game, Each level you will be exploring has a bunch of bright and happy music that really fits the mood of each level and helps you prepare for the next one, as for the sound effects, they are OK, you just get some basic low-MIDI sound effects taken from Mario (Like his classic little jump sound effect) and what am I saying? All the sound effects are taken from Mario! But it is not that much to complain about.
Addictiveness-8/10 The game is actually pretty fun to be honest! And here are a couple of reasons why, first is that it actually feels like Mario, sounds like Mario, looks like Mario, and yeah, the game is just Mario but with sonic in it and I think they did really good with this one! I still play the game a couple of times in case I am in a bad mood, and that is a perfect time to play an awesome game like this! The game has alot of things to suck you back in and I personally think that is a huge plus when it comes to these kind of games!
Depth-7/10 This game is actually pretty long to be honest! The game is about 8 worlds (The normal length of a mario game) and there are 4 levels each per world with the 4th level being a boss, so the game will most likely take you about 1-2 hours to finish in all. I still come back to the game to even break my personal high score! I currently have 456,789 as my current high score for the whole game!
Difficulty-6/10 In my very very honest opinion, the game is actually pretty easy and won't offer any much challenge even for the most experinced gamer. I personally thought the game was a breeze to play through, heck, I even got through the whole thing with about 20 extra lives left! Now that is alot! And you won't be wasting them anytime sooner, even the bosses are pathetically easy!? They only take like what? 2-5 hits? Then they are done! Heck even mario had much more longer and challenging bosses then this!
Overall-7.3/10 This one wasn't too?bad, I mean sure it had some gripes with it, but in the end, It is still a pretty enjoyable hack while the way! I gave the game a 7.3 because how much fun it offered and the good amount of length in the adventure. So anyways, this has been my 98th review guys! Just two more! I can't wait! See you guys tommorow!
