Just like Mickey Mania, World of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, every Sonic the Hedgehog game on the Genesis, and a few others, this game...took me years to finish...this is a little hard to believe but every, I repeat, EVERY Sega Genesis (or Mega Drive) game either gave me so much trouble for years and I recently finished it for the first time or I haven't finished it...why? well, maybe because old games tend to be harder, in any case, this game may be very frustrating, but is also a fun game, that's for sure, this game originally made it's debut as an arcade game, but after a while, it was eventually ported to other systems, and one of those systems is the Genesis, is this game worth playing? well, the answer is a big yes.
Story: I can't say too much because the story of this game is told purely by cut scenes, but apparently you are a snowman whose girlfriend (maybe not but it would still make sense) gets kidnapped and you have to save her, you can go by yourself or can be helped by another snowman (which is your brother or friend, I don't know), the story isn't original, is the classic ''princess in distress'' story but hey, the original arcade game doesn't even have some kind of story, so, I guess we have to be thankful, the story is actually a little BIT more than just this, but you have to find out that part of the story by yourself.
Graphics: The sprites of the game look colorful and are well animated (this includes the bosses), I have to mention that the game runs very smoothly, and that it never suffers from slowdown, those things are also welcome.
Addictiveness: The arcade style gameplay of this game is awesome, but it lacks variety, you control a snowman (apparently named Nick or Tom) that can jump and move left and right, to defeat enemies, you have to shoot some...shiny snow at them...doing so will ,eventually cover them completely and ''turn'' them into a snowball that's the same size as you, then, you must push the snowball and make it crash into a wall, if the snowball is very close to a wall, it will bounce two or more times until it explodes, and that is how you defeat enemies, you can also use another enemy (on snowball form) to defeat two or more enemies at the same time, the enemies that get hit with the snowball will drop items (food) that give you points and items that upgrade your abilities, for example, you start running and move faster, there are only 3 upgrades, well, actually 4, but 1 doesn't count because it makes you invincible for a short period of time, sure the gameplay of this game is unique and playing this game is fun, but the game is lacking on variety (a little).
Sound: The effect sounds tend to sound unique and are also fitting, when you die, you get to hear an unique effect sound that almost sounds comical, and when you hit most of the bosses with snow, it sounds like fireworks, as for the music...well, I like it, but it's still not the catchiest music on a Genesis game, the music also lacks variety, you only find catchy music in this game, not more, oh, and this game has only 1 boss theme by the way, is one of those games where all the bosses use the same theme.
Difficulty: I don't know if it's just me but this game is just so hard, the first stage is very easy, but when you get to the second boss in the game, that's when things start to get hard, I don't know how this could happen, but the third stage in this game took me more than 8 years to finish, and to make things worse, the boss of the third stage is easy, I said to myself: ''Too much frustration and pain just for...that?!'', anyway, that's another story, back on how hard this game is, there are two bosses in this game that are SO unfair, and they will defeat you a lot of times (if you are playing the game, you probably already guessed a spoiler, but whatever) and lastly, the game uses a password system, but not like the password system from, for example, Spongebob Squarepants: SuperSponge, where every password is four letters long, here you can't memorize the passwords...the fact that this game uses passwords and that I didn't played this game everyday for all these years is probably why this game took me years to finish, I was lazy to play...and this game is hard and has a password system...yeah, those must be the reasons...
Depth: I felt so much rage, when I found that this game is VERY short, ''too much frustration...and this is a short game?!'' those are the words that when through my head when that happened, apparently, this is the longest version of the game, but it's still not long enough...
This is a game that is definitely worth playing, but the gameplay of this game lacks variety and, of course, this isn't the most entertaining Genesis game ever, other flaws are the fact that this game is short and that the game can be very frustrating at times, still, Snowbros is a good game to pass the time and have fun for a short period of time. |
