Hey, long time no see eh?

I've been busy with college and what not, won't bore you with the details.

ANYWAY, I'm here to offer my thoughts on DmC: Devil May Cry. I just recently played through and beat the game and thought I'd offer my honest thoughts.

I'd like to preface by saying I am a DMC fan...well of 1-3 at least, 4 just didn't do it for me.

Characters :

Dante : First off, Dante's new look has grown on me. I hated it at first, but I got used to it. Moving on. His characterization in the first half of the game is completely unlikable and his personality is unbearable, but in the later half of the game he gets his s*** straight and actually becomes somewhat likable....somewhat. No, he's not like the classic Dante, nor is he intended to be. This characterization has potential, now if Ninja Theory capitalizes on that potential is yet to be seen,

Kat : I actually liked this character a lot. No, she's not Trish, hell, she's not even Lady, but that's why I like her. She's her own entity and I can respect that. Also, she actually HELPS Dante in the game, something that most side characters nowadays barely do. She IS the the love interest for Dante...it only fails because the writing is sub par in this regard. But for the most part she is very likable.

Mundus : The main antagonist. He's okay. I never really felt like he was a huge threat. He basically controlled the world and you had to stop him. Oh, and He's a demon. I guess that's bad.

Endgame Spoiler :

Spoiler:

virgil : My favorite character in this game. I REALLY liked the characterization here. NT really excelled with this character. When you first meet him he  is calm and says he wants to save humanity, then out of the blue does an incredibly cruel act by killing Lilith and Mundus' unborn (unbirthed?) child. Then He just stays cool and collected till the very end, then you find out his true motive. He did it to rule humanity. He wanted to kill Mundus so he could take his place and rule humanity or "free" them has he puts it. It's an unbelievably well done plot twist that NT pulled off masterfully. Although in hindsight, I could see it coming since I've played DMC3 to death

Overall, The characters are radically different, but if you go in with an open mind you can look past the stranger parts.

Story

Yes, this game has VERY political/ anti-conservative/anti-fox news undertones, that may turn off a few. I for one didn't mind it, I actually found the media's corruption of society actually really interesting, unoriginal, but interesting. The story drags a bit in the middle, but picks up towards the end. Overall I found the story enjoyable albeit even with the weird characterizations of the main cast.

Spoiler:
The Bill O'Reily spoof character in the game I found hilarious, His boss fight is pretty cool as well. Oh, and He's a demon, nice.

Gameplay

I enjoyed it very much. The whole 30fps controversy is just plain stupid...it doesn't hurt the game at all, if it does it's very insignificant. Yes, it's dumbed down from previous games to make it more accessible and yes it's very easy to achieve an S, SS, or SSS rank without much difficulty, but the combo system is great, This game has the best combing system I've seen in a long while. The amount of variety in chaining hits is almost endless. Plus, it makes you feel like a badass and isn't that the most important thing?

Spoiler:
The devil trigger SUCKS. Instead of turning into an awesome devil-thingy like previous DMCs, Dante just gains white hair and a red coat...poor taste Ninja Theory. Also, it suspends the enemies in midair and allows you to wale on them with airel combos, I used it twice in regular gameplay, and that was just to refill my health. It's only useful in the last boss fight, as you need it to deal the final blow. It also last for like 4 seconds. Not even kidding.

Lasting appeal :

The default difficulties are unlocked from the start with Son of Sparda, Dante must Die, Heaven or Hell, and even Hell and Hell being unlocked after beating the game on higher difficulties. Meaning, you'll be replaying the story frequently.

There is DLC, another story chapter and a costume pack that includes classic Dante.

Overall, You'll replay the game time after time. Oh, and achievements and Trophies are plentiful. If your into that sorta thing.....

I really liked this game, blacksheep of the franchise for sure, but don't let all the hate and fan backlash detract from an overall stellar game. At least give it a rental.

Oh a rating? I don't rate games in my reviews, I just let the review speak for itself.

Peace.

P.S. The name is really, really stupid....DmC: Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry: Devil May Cry....really? Also, the wig joke in the opening level? Poor taste Ninja Theory, poor taste.
