Ah...it's 2002, I'm just waiting for my show to come back on, then upon waiting, I happened to see this commercial for a new yoshi title for GBA, and it happened to be Yoshi's island! Yes, my all time favorite SNES platformer is finally on the small screen, but is this port better then the original thing? Let's see!
Story-8/10 A stork hurries across the dusky, pre-dawn sky, In his bill, he supports a pair of tiwns, Suddenly, a shadow appears in a gap between the clouds and races towards the stork with blinding speed. Snatching only one baby, this creature vanishes into the darkness from whence it came. The second baby falls undetected towards the open sea....Meanwhile, back at yoshi's island, yoshi is taking a walk, Suddenly a baby drops in onto his back. The baby seems to be fine. This is very fortunate! Wha-? Something else fell with the baby...It looks like a map. Maybe the stork was using it? But not even yoshi can figure it out, Yoshi decides to talk to his friends, AAAKK! Kamek, the evil magikoopa, and kidnapper of the baby, quickly dispatches his toadies, when he discovers he missed the other baby! Will these two children ever reach their parents safely?
Gameplay-10/10 Like previous entries, Super Mario world 2: Yoshi's island is a 2D, side scrolling platformer game. Unlike it's predecessors however, the game involves a radically different moveset and approach to mortality. In addition to the typical run and jump controls, yoshi can ingest enemies and manipulate objects using his tounge, after ingesting an enemy, yoshi can either eject or swallow them. Swallowing them allows the yoshi to lay a yoshi egg, which he can carry up to six of. Yoshi can then aim and throw the eggs. These projectiles damage enemies, riochet off solid surfaces, and skim across water. If the yoshi comes into contact with a super star, Baby Mario will transform into superstar Mario, granting him temporary invincibility. This game also introduces time based health, When yoshi is hurt, Baby Mario will be trapped in a bubble and float. Then a timer will appear, you can collect star thingies to increase the timer, but be careful! if the timer reaches 0, the toadies will come to kidnap baby Mario, then you will lose a life.
Graphics-10/10 Ah the graphics, i absolutely love the art style of this game! It's so bright, cute, and colorful! This almost feels like a Kirby game! All the sprites look very detailed indeed, Same goes to all the locales you will be exploring. Nintendo has REALLY outdone themselves with this game! All the yoshi titles are supposed bright, colorful, and cute! I really wanna visit this world now!
Sound-10/10 Oh yes...the soundtrack, all of the tracks are bright, cheerful, and happy, like a yoshi title should be! Rarely are there any dark unhappy songs, except for the final boss theme, which sounds REALLY epic! All the SFX are pretty slick too! Especially the sound that plays when you kill a boss!
Addictiveness-10/10 Ask me, how can this game not be fun? Heck! I managed to get 100% all in 1 week! How amazing is that? Beside all of that....like all other Super Mario advance titles, you can play the original Mario bros in case you get tired of Yoshi's quest. But it is really the same thing in every SMA game!
Depth-9/10 This is one of those games that will last you longer then a month, HECK, 3 months! I just don't see how you can hate this game! I mean sure it may be too cute for it's own good, but still, it's an awesome title!
Difficulty-8/10 Ah the difficulty...some parts in this game are actually pretty difficult! For example, it took me quite a while to figure out how to beat the final boss....But otherwise, the game is still a cakewalk in most other levels....And besides....when I see the word "Nintendo" on the package of a game, I know it's going to be hard!
Overall-10/10 Overall! This game is MY personal favorite of the 4 SMA titles. I dunno why though....SMA2 is pretty good too, but I guess I'm just going to go with this one. Anyways, if I were you, I would just buy this one! You will not regret it!
