Hello, Pokémon community!  I wanted to let everyone know about a bit of Pokémon that few people I've talked to seem to truly know about.  Effort Values.  Effort Values are points given to a Pokémon after defeating another Pokémon in battle.  Effort Values are converted to skill point upon leveling up.  So I've taken the liberty to devise a series of points on EVs.  To get EVs, your Pokémon must battle; high level, low level, legendaries, Rattatas, and anything in between.  The level of a Pokémon does not affect how many effort points are distributed.  However, different KINDS of Pokémon award different amounts of EV to different skills.  So a Poochyena will award two EVs to Attack, while a Salamence will award three.  So why not battle indefinitely and get all of your stats to 999?  This; one stat may not accumulate more than 252 EV to one stat, or more than 510 EV in total.  Vitamins also give EV.  They attribute 10 EV to whichever stat they improve upon.  But, they will not raise a pokemon's stats above 100, or raise the EV total to more that 252 (per stat) or 510 (total).  Another part to think about is Pokerus.  Pokerus is a disease that can latch onto your Pokémon.  I'd explain that, but it'd take forever, and that's for a different thread.  Pokerus doubles the amount of EV a Pokémon obtains while battling.  So if you'd normally receive one EV, it'd be two.  Two will be four.  Three would be six.  So if you want your medium level Pokémon to get stronger without leveling them up too much, then take them to battle weak Pokémon, thirty battles or so, then level them up and your stats will increase more than they would normally.  Before Generation III, you could also use the "Box Trick" to get your Pokémon stronger even after they reached level 100.  Battle your Pokémon against other Pokémon and then place them in the PC and remove them again.  Their skill points will have increased.  However, in Generation III, it was removed.

I hope this helped, and if you have any questions or comments, then please post them and I will do my best to answer them.

I feel like there is a pretty big reason that effort values are a lesser known part of training Pokemon. It's important for people to realize that EV training is mostly useful when trying to battle against other players. That's not to say that it doesn't feel pretty cool to have all EV trained Pokemon on a team though!

I would also like to know how many people do this and if they feel that it was worth all the time that they spent on it. I think the developers may want to consider changing the way Effort Values work if they want more everyday players to get some enjoyment out of it.

draconiskitty : What you say ids very true; most of the time, EV training is for mostly pvp, rather than against NPCs, but in Emerald, (my favorite Pokémon game ever) there is also the Battle Frontier to think about, where strategy is an integral part of winning.  In fact, because the opponents get stronger as you go in the Battle Frontier, I looked this up to find.

Oh interesting, I completely forgot the Battle Frontier since I don't think I even got a chance to go there in the game before my advance broke. I had no idea that it got to that level of difficulty. Well there's one more thing to check out playing emerald again on the site. I wonder why they haven't continued to put something as challenging as that into the more recent games (can't speak for BW2 though since I have yet to play it).

Another thing, similar to effort values that needs to be touched upon is individual values.
Each Pokemon, when either found or born, has it's own unique stats which are random. They are affected by both their gender, and also their nature. (and possibly something else) This is the reason for breeding pokemon to get one with optimum starting stats. Combine this with effort values, and you can get one kick-arse Pokemon.

Tails the Fox: Kick arse? Really haha just kidding that is pretty funny, I try to EV train my Pokémon to get the best stats for both the elite 4 and battle frontier, I usually aim for a Pokémon starter that has a nature that it can benefit from, so basically when it comes time for me to choose a starter I keep going back from my save until it has a good nature and stats that it can benefit from, so I try to get a Pokémon with good IV values and a good nature and then I train it in its highest stat and earn EVs for that stat and go from there, I have some Pokémon that are really close to their full potential at level 100!
