I remember the day when my Dad bought this for me. I unwrapped it and tossed the cartridge in. I was hooked instantly. The game does offer a lot for story or dialogue. Unless of course you count the sounds the NPCs make when you smash them with a blunt instrument. You start out choosing between 1 of 4 bikes. The idea is to race to the finish while avoiding obstacles like oncoming traffic, Police, pedestrians and of course the other players. As far as I know this is the last Road Rash that was ever made it is definitely the best. Compared to toady's graphics, its pretty primitive, but you gotta remember this was the awkward moment between the old and the new. For its time, it was more than decent. N64 is famous for its blocky hexagon characters. But who cares. It was the best they could do with the tech they had at the time. The game gets progressively better as you get faster bikes and better weapons. Nun chucks, a Pipe wrench, Pool cue, Mace...or is it paint. There are a number of different attacks that can be performed. Like smashing a spiked bat into the face of a police officer on a motorcycle. You can taz your enemy and kick them into an oncoming car while they are stunned, or even off a cliff. Jamming a weapon into the spokes of an enemies tire is also great fun if you can pull it off. It costs you a weapon but if you play through each level a few times you can collect a bunch, so don't be afraid to explore. You get asked to join gangs or Mac's when you purchase a new bike. But as far as I know it doesn't do anything but charge you one hundred dollars dues. It makes not difference because the idea is to win, so why limit who you can smash in the face with a tire iron. One thing that is irritating is the lack of music. I mean sure its old and they had limited space but really, after hearing "MEAN MACHINE MEAN MACHINE bla bu ba boom bla boo blee." six hundred times. It gets a little mind numbing. No problem there, just throw on some slayer and go to town. The two player games are also a great deal of fun. As I recall playing these is a great way to find some of the more rare weapons. One thing should mention is that weapons stack so you can have a bunch of the same kind. So if you spoke jam someone with a tire iron. You can do so and still have the same weapon to smash the next guy with. Near the end of the game you will come to the final stages and will have a choice between two super bikes. These bikes go retardedly fast and if you get on a decent straight way, you can jump cars and get wicked air time. As the stages progress you get more and more cash for wining races. Getting first is best and a good strategy to have is to replay all the stages but the last. This ensures that you have enough cash to buy the next bike, as this is required for you to move to the next heat of races. I don't recommend buying the bike early if you are seeking to physically assault your opponents, having a faster bike gets you to the end faster, but that's not what this game is about. Its about beating the living doody out of the other players and doing so in the most brutal fashion. You also earn extra cash for hitting players, knocking them off their bikes. Punching, kicking and smashing cars with weapons. Hitting pedestrians. Kitting cops. Knocking cops off their bikes. Landing crazy jumps. And by jumps I mean driving over the back or front of a car and doing back flips. Front flips or barrel rolls. And successfully landing them. Not much else to say other than I wish they would make a version of this for Xbox 360. It would rock. Anyway. happy smashing and if netplay is available i would love to play against anyone who has got it. See you soon.
