Final Fantasy is one of my favorite games. When I first played it I hated it because it was so hard. I took a second look and decided to take a strategic point of view. I rebooted my adventure with a Warrior, Monk, White Mage, and Black Mage. This time I completed the game, and I was pleased in doing so.

Graphics
This game has really good graphics, but they are generally only showed in the battles. The overworld is very colorful and interesting, but I feel that it sometimes lacks detail and there is A LOT of water. The enemy sprites however, are excellent. They are at top quality and look amazing. The design for the characters is clever and cool looking, and the spells have interesting effects. I rate this an 8.

Sound
Oh, my. This game has some of the best music any game can have. Who can forget the legendary Final Fantasy theme and Matoya's Cave? Being a fantasy game, you would expect fantasy and medieval like music. That is what you get, except you multiply it by 100. This game has beautiful themes like the castle theme, and the battle theme is upbeat and interesting. This deserves a complete 10.

Addictiveness
This game gets really addicting. I must say though, it gets really slow at times, especially in the beginning, as you will grind forever. Especially if you want that Mythril sword . The excess of grinding gets boring and the lengthy dungeons with the constant damage being put on your team makes the game tedious at times, but extremely rewarding at the end. There are many difficult enemies(like every boss), so you may be discouraged, but with determination and 3 hours of grinding you can do it! I give this a 7.

Story
Do I even need to say it? This game is the father of all RPGs in terms of story. Final Fantasy is just that, a fantasy, but an AMAZING ONE. I don't want to spoil anything in this game as it needs to be played all the way through to be understood. If you want a game with story, this is the game. If I could rate this a 20 I would, so this is a 10.

Depth
This game has a good level of depth, but most of the questing in this game is the story. Despite seeming to be random, all the quests are part of the main quest and there aren't any other options. At the beginning of the game, you have the option of choosing the class for 4 different characters. Each combinations calls for a different strategy and play style. With a total of 6 classes and only 4 slots, there are a total of 209 combinations. I rate this 9 just for that reason. Who needs side quests when you can replay the game 209 times?

Difficulty
This game as I stated before requires a lot of grinding, meaning enemies get much harder, and bosses are very difficult as well. In addition to this, the concept of magic points or mana points was pretty much amount of uses. Each level of spell has a certain amount of uses depending on you level and class. This made using spells very difficult throughout the game, until you fight a boss and just throw every spell at him until he melts. Have you ever tried beating final fantasy with 4 black mages? This gets a 10.

This game is my favorite out of all Final Fantasy games(yes, even FFVII). This game has great graphics, excellent music, and a story that will make you cry in the end. This is a game that I recommend to anyone with the time and determination of a legendary RPG.

A nice little review you made there
Thou I would agree that a few more details would have been nice, like a small plot for those new to the game just so they will have a general idea of the story events as a whole. None the less good job

mastersword2799 : Good review. You hit all the key points. I enjoyed reading it.

As far as the game goes, it's pretty much a given that RPG's especially from this era require a LOT of grinding to get through the game. It's just better to get it out of the way early.

It's really interesting to play through the game using different character combinations.

It's a testament to how good the game is when I can still go back and play it 25+ years since it came out and still enjoy it. It's funny how with this game, they not only saved the developers company it also spawned one of the greatest franchises in gaming history.

Good review, but I wouldn't really say it was the father of all RPG's in terms of story. The Ultima games, not to mention the Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, were around much, much earlier than Final Fantasy. FF took inspiration from Dragon Warrior, which in turn took inspiration from Ultima, and that took inspiration from D&D. But, like I said, good review anyway.

Nice review! It's a tiny bit short, but it still has a decent amount of detail in each section. I've never really thought that the original Final Fantasy looked that fun to play. Of course, I don't really like any of the games in the Final Fantasy main series except FFX.

Good review here. It was lengthy, and covered all of the categories well.
I started to play this, but got bored after a bit, however, I am may try this again now that I've read this. I didn't pick a very versatile team last time either, which didn't help any.

Anyway, keep up the good work.

ARedLetterDay : Well technically, Dragon Quest came out only a year prior to Final Fantasy, and there is no exact proof of Dragon Quest inspiring the creators. Final Fantasy was in development for sometime already. I take back the father of all RPGs part, but I meant to say that it was a huge stepping stone for later developments of JRPGs.

There doesn't have to be exact proof. Final Fantasy was arguably the more popular JRPG in the states of course, and especially in its local release it certainly blew up fast simply because Square, at the time, was an established name in computer gaming. Despite that popularity, Dragon Warrior is the inspiration for every JRPG that followed it. It introduced the basic concepts, while FF expanded on them. Regardless of whether or not FF is the father of all RPG's (which I know you said you take back), DW / DQ was the template for everything after.

Also, sorry if I come across as too firm or a bit mean, not my intention I can assure you.

ARedLetterDay : It's fine, I believe I kind of came in too strongly as well. I knew Final Fantasy was a hit in the states, but what i didn't know was that DQ was pretty much the original in the genre of JRPGs. Thanks for the info and sorry!

Well, to be fair, it's not exactly common knowledge. So, don't feel too bad!
