Renegade! For the NES. It was about time for another review, wasn't it? Yes, it was. And what better game to review than one of my all time favorite games, Renegade. Now I understand that this is a clone of a game released in Japan. But that's not how I'm going to look at this. (the other game was Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun.) Lets just start out with this. I really love this game. And I mean that. I am emotionally effected by this game. Now Renegade doesn't exactly get all the credit it deserves. It's rival beat em up being Double Dragon it's easy to compare the two and say Billy and Jimmy beat Mr K out. But hold up there, Princess Pattycakes. You have no idea the fun you're missing here. If Double Dragon is like the Grateful Dead of the NES, you know classic. Then Renegade is The Ramones of NES beat em ups. Oh yeah! It's not as pretty. It's not as well put together. But it's grungy. It's raw. It's edgy.. It's PUNK! Enough of that pandering to the game. Lets get down to business and talk about what this game really has to offer. Graphically speaking, Renegade isn't exactly a diamond, but it is a gem nonetheless. Everything is clear or well almost. But when things get questionable it's NOT because of the graphics as much as it just gets weird. Throughout the game you'll have to take Mr. K through 4 levels of NES brawling. Yes you read right, 4 levels. But that's not a bad thing. See instead of having a scrolling level, Renegade replaces that with scenes. Most levels have at least 3 - 4 scenes. And some of the options in later level scenes will be level warping your butt back to previous levels. (I'll touch on that later) Each scene is fairly simply done, but that works. It's not all cluttered with stuff to distract you, yet there is enough so that the mood is there. For instance when you're fighting in the subway train in scene 2 level 1. It really feels like it, and it's awesome. Some of the scenes can get old though like when you're battling through the bad guy's hideout. The sprites aren't exactly perfect either, but they get the job done perfectly. The level one baddies all look like hoodlum gang members. Then of course there is Mr. K himself. Is that a milk mustache on him or does he just have one extraordinary overbite? The world may never know. I give the graphics 7 milk mustaches out of 10. So how's the sound? What? You mean the music? Or do you mean the sound effects? Because there is a big difference here. The sound effects are all bland and pretty simple. "psh" sounds for punches and kicks alike. A weird "vewp" sound when you do a jump kick. Yeah average nes sound bites I guess... Now on to the music! This game just rocks my socks off. Seriously, and it's so unique. It sort of reminds me of the rock and roll sound from the 50's. Which fits in just great when you look at your character. What with his Elvis like inspired pompadour. On second thought maybe it's James Dean with an overbite or a milk mustache, I'm not sure. Either way the music just plain rocks. I give the music in Renegade 8 pompadours out of 10 because albeit great music after a while it all starts to sound the same. But hey, it's still amazingly done. You wanna know how addictive this game is for me? Just go look at the holder of the vizzed highest score for Renegade on the NES. You'll see. And I'm still playing. I probably play this game more than any other NES game out there outside of World Championship Wrestling and maybe Willow, both on the NES. I really really love me some Renegade. The controls are tight and responsive, the music is amazing, and the trash talking after every scene is just classic. You'll be telling these punks and hoodlums they're not tough enough for you every time you mop up the side walks with their face. And by chance if they do sweep the streets with your greasy wig it'll be followed with a "Beat it, Scum" taunt. I really love the cheesy classic taunts of this game. And if you thought that Mr K was just some mean street brawler, guess again. This guy races hogs too! Well to be honest it looks more like a classic Honda 350. That's right, not only does Mr. K bash baddies he does it while one a classic bike. Mr K's one rough and tough pompadour wearing bad mother(shut yo mouth). I give this game's addictive game play 9 giant and violent Kim's out of 10 There is some things you just don't do in this world. You don't urinate into the wind. You don't tug on Superman's cape, and you don't look for a story in Renegade for the NES. Seriously. What were you expecting here? To rescue your wimpy sibling? Or maybe your school yard sweetheart? Well if you were you could be on to something there. See, in the Japanese version (Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun) you're fighting your way through a bunch of hoodlums and gang members to rescue your little brother who was abducted by them. Why did they kidnap your little brother? I haven't a clue. While in the American version you're trying to rescue your girlfriend. When you read the descr Renegade doesn't have a whole lot of depth to it either. It's basically just a beat em up though, what'd you expect? It has one player and two player mode. But the two player mode isn't co-op either. It's done in the same fashion as Mario Bros. But you're both the same character. There is also different difficulties which is selected by playing the one or two player B modes. And the motorcycle scene is pretty awesome for a change up in game play but it's a one time thing. I give it 3 subway muggings out of 10. Renegade isn't that difficult, but it's not a piece of cake either. The controls are tight and very responsive as I've stated before. You do have to get used to the way you fight though. While you're alone in this game you'll often be double teamed by these putrid goons in almost every scene. The problem here with new comers is that you sometimes punch with A and sometimes with B. If you're facing right you're punching with B if you're facing left you're punching with A and visa versa for kicks. But the jump kick is always the same A plus B together. Just play it for a bit and you'll get used to it I promise. I give the difficulty 5 "vewp" kicks out of 10 I thought I'd just add in here that I'll be writing a walk through for this game as well on here. So if you've enjoyed this and you're a Renegade fan for the NES be looking out for that too. As always this is SystemOfLies and I do hope you've enjoyed this review. Have a nice day!
