To revise my old answer I posted a while ago...

I love the Classic sonic games, especially Sonic 1 and S3@K, these games had beautiful music including hidden palace, Green Hill and Labyrinth, oh and Sonic's 3's ending theme.

The chiptune feel to the music really pops out as the Megadrive had one of the best sound systems the YM2612 sound chip and the DAC for drums and beats, I love how it sounds a ton, it is imao, the best of the entire retro era.

The thing is SEGA has always *coughsonicboomcough* Has always strived for high quality sound, every tune from Sonic adventure, (twinkle park) to Sonic and the black knight (molten mine) had interesting and unique music Because starting waay back in Sonic 3 all the way to the black knight, Jun Senoue has been composing music for the major game titles, it's so distinct how he playes his gituar and makes it whine so smoothly to the music, (just take a listen to the song Prof.Omochao or wave ocean and you'll understand ).

The composition of the vocal tracks were also in no way lacking either. (well, SA2's Knuckles themes are debatable, but I personally find them guilty pleasures...) From Live and learn, to With me, even if you don't agree with Heavy rock on a personal level, you have to say that the composition is in no way lacking. I won't get to technical into the music's composition, but let's just say it's always colourful.

Speaking of colourful, Sonic Colours along with Unleashed was one of the first games to not have Jun Senoue do composition for it, it was done by Kenichi Tokoi, Fumie Kumatani and Tomoya Ohtani primarily, and the music was also very good, From the full symphonic parts of Unleashed cutscenes to the techy Colour themes it was all great and flowing smoothly. I especially enjoyed Gaia Gate from Unleashed as well as the into's Symphonic scene.

Aaaand then we have sonic boom and Sonic's lost causeworld, but let's not talk about that.

So basically Sonic has had a very rich library of colourful music that matches almost ever genre of music that helps enhance our experience with the Blue blur and his friends (and foes!)

I can't choose just one game, because they all cater to different emotions in one form or another, the are all great and I love them.

(Well that turned out to be a lot more like an article then I intended...)

To revise myself, I never placed the game I liked the music from the 2D side of Sonic. I love Sonic 3 and Knuckles' soundtrack, not just because it was made by Michael Jackson, but because it was just naturally catchy, especially Flying Battery and Ice Cap Zones. I still like Sonic 06's music more than it, but I listen to Sonic 3 and Knuckles' music more because Sonic 3 and Knuckles is a lot better than Sonic 06.

To me, Sonic 3 and Knuckles has the best music. Even though more modern systems can create more complex tracks, something about those classic 16 bit ones always stick to me. The music during the intro of Sonic 3 has always been my favorite, when Sonic runs into Knuckles the very first time in the franchise.

My choice is Adventure 2. I was about to pick Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, but then I remembered that Sonic Adventure 2 has a lot of great songs as well. Examples are Radical Highway, White Jungle, Live and Learn. Ah, so many good songs.

Sonic Adventure 2 because it has City Escape, the Chao Garden theme, and I think it may be where live and learn is from.
Also the theme they used for certain Eggman introduction scenes was just really nice, I loved it.

There was the whole knuckles Rap song thing though, you know "I feel it in my feet, the great emeralds power allows me to see."
That part wasn't so great.

My vote would go to Sonic 3 and Knuckles. I prefer the retro Sonic games in terms of the soundtrack and in general. If I had to pick just one game that would be it, both in terms of soundtrack and as a game overall. Some more Sonic modern games do have some amazing tracks (even sonic 06 had solaris phase 2) but as a package Sonic 3 & Knuckles takes the cake.

CD wins by a mile I think but only the JPN/PAL soundtrack because I hate the US one
The best song is Cosmic Eternity - Believe in Yourself.
