Death Note is rarely one of those great works of fiction where the majority of fans
actually end up loving the central antagonist more than the protagonist. All different
fans learn to sympathize with this character and empathize with that character.

In short, I've noticed that the general view of Light Yagami is that he's "pure evil" and
such. Just that he's "evil" doesn't cut it. But in addition to that general description, I
think it's important to take a more scientific standpoint, in terms of medicine and
psychology.

While the majority of us may "hate" Light for his immorality, he is the
protagonist after all and Death Note is really the story of his tragedy. It's more easy
to sympathize/empathize from this view.

Personally, I believe he has psychological (psychopathological) DISORDER(s), not a
disease of anything. From what I can tell, he may suffer from MEGALOMANIA and/or
a GOD COMPLEX. Maybe even an anti-social personality disorder (sociopathy or psychopathy).

I can't stress enough the importance to take in all accounts of his character when you
medically diagnose him. Remember, those with anti-social personality disorders do not
have a capacity for guilt or shame. And though they are considered "anti-social", they are
extremely charming in nature... It's all about the ego.

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."

I don't think light yagami had any disorders. He was given the power of a god, and in his mind that is what he was. His ego grew more and more as he gained more supporters and he started to feel like a god.

ender44 :

Sorry for being all technical, but we must be thorough and consider semantics in these
situations. What you describe may be a god complex, which must be considered a psycho-
logical disorder. Psychopathological, even.

It's like in Hamlet. I bet most people don't realize the scientific and medical aspect to the
titular character. After most classes, kids just call him "insane". Well, maybe he is... or isn't.
But Hamlet is generally perceived to have a god complex.

Again, it's really important to take a scientific standpoint and consider medicine, psychology,
and semantics.

In my view, though Light and Hamlet have such psychopathological disorders... it's neither a
disease or insanity. Therefore, it's just not semantically correct to call them "insane".

I found myself agreeing with Light for the most part in the series until he started to get arrogant and play games with L.

If anything, the only problem was that he was too arrogant and got the attention of people that he shouldn't have.

I think he just went crazy as soon as L got close to discovering his secrets and all of that Light was good without the Deathnote but with it he just went crazy for power.
