Did ya? How did it feel? Did it hurt? We're you asleep? Did you took pain killers? How many days did you needed to stay in the hospital?

I'm taking my first surgery on January 4 for my chest, my chest is sinked in So there gunna put a bar inside my chest (Nuss procedure)

Then I'm gunna have to take a spinal surgery after a year of recovery, There gunna put a brace inside my back

So what about ya?

Bah, never.
And I never want to have surgery in the future. I'm one of those people who never want to have any pain.

I've had two surgeries in my life, both occurring before I was one year old. One was a hernia operation and the other was for my neck. Obviously I don't remember them, and I didn't even know about the operations until I was in my teen's, but yes I was put under for both of them. I don't really know much else about them.

I had surgery of sorts, though it was... minor.

Some years ago, my younger brother and me were outside for the hell of it while home alone. After talking to my mother on the phone, my brother decides to throw some things, such as picture frame parts, something like javelins. He manages to strike me in the arm from quite a distance. It was obviously a complete accident. I had to go in for several surgeries to get the splinters OUT of my arm, and each time it did little to no good. (I hated it, I hated the feeling of being numbed AND worked on, it brought me to tears the sensation was so weird and annoying)

The amazing thing is that one big splinter, the main issue, came out of my arm when I was in the shower some time after all that business. I was surprised, because I legitimately believed it was several small splinters and thusly not THAT much of an issue. You know, considering it was a part of a picture frame, and not very splinter-y to begin with.

mrfe : You would think that, but none of it was as bad as I would have expected.

Looking back, I'm just amazed I didn't need surgery for things like a broken wrist I'd received during high school.

Oh yes. In fact, I just had minor surgery the other day. In one day and out the next. Because of problems at birth (first surgery was at two months old) I have had surgery almost a dozen times. Some of them major, a few of them minor. I will likely have another dozen in my lifetime assuming I live a decent length.

I have to be put to sleep for all of mine, and sometimes I wake up with pain from where I was cut even though I was given drugs. When I was younger they would give me morphine for pain. They have moved to a different standard, I think, but I haven't taken anything the past few times in the hospital except for a Tylonol or two. My tolerance for pain has gone way up.

Best of luck with yours, DwarvenKnuckleBuster!

I haven't yet, but I"m probably going to have to go in for back and hip surgery. I have a deformed hip bone that causes me tremendous pain and limited mobility, and my back is killing me but they haven't found out what the problem is yet. *SIGH* It sucks to be poor in the USA-no health coverage, tons of medical bills, and still no diagnosis. Gotta love it.

Nope, and I don't plan to. I'm one of those rare people who hasn't broken or sprained a bone, even though I occasionally do dangerous things.

I had surgery at the dentist. (think this counts) They had to pull some of my teeth out.
I hurt a little bit, and I was awake. I took pain killers for the first day.
After the first day it didn't really hurt.

earthwarrior: Oh, you're right, that does count and thus makes my earlier post a lie. I too have had dental surgery; I have had to have all my teeth removed due to a degenerative enamel disease and they had to put me under and cut open my gums to get to the roots because they were twisted. No way they were doing that while I was awake. And pain pills were my friend, for serious.

I have only had one surgical procedure in my life, but I imagine there will be more in my future.

When I was 11 or 12, my heart was racing for hours. Really pounding too; even through my shirt you could see it pound. After a night time trip to the hospital, I was diagnosed with Ventricular Tachycardia, and later, a glycogen storage disease (Pompeii's form). After getting sent to a rather nice children's hospital, they put me out and snaked some sort of contraption through the inside of my upper leg up to my heart.

When I woke up, I felt a dull pain, but pain medicine covered me for the most part. I do not recall what medication it was, but it left me groggier than what they used to knock me out for the procedure.

Before that, they had knocked me out to put the paddles on me to slow my heart down, and I remember before I fell asleep I felt REALLY good. I think it was morphine or something similar. Not really surgery, but since it was asked about the medications taken, figured I would throw in my little morphine experience.

DwarvenKnuckleBuster : I have had ten surgeries so far in life. It isn’t something I would recommend to anyone but that’s how it is. Most of them were very painful and I’d be laid up for a couple of months at minimum recovering from surgery and doing physical therapy and such. There were other surgeries though where I was released the same day and such but more often than not I was in the hospital or in and out of the hospital for anywhere from a few weeks to a few months after surgeries.

Although it wasn’t enjoyable the odd thing is whenever one of my family members or close friends goes in for surgery and or is dealing with some kind of illness I will often say that I wish it were me going through it instead of them because I’m use to it and would rather be the one going though it than those I'm close to. Most of my surgeries have been for orthopedic reasons.

I wish you the best. Keep your head up and don’t worry. Best of luck to you.

I have once to take my tonsils out, I was about 8-9 at the time, I remeber the hospital running on time for once. When I got called in and the opperation was explained and I was asked which hand I write with and I said right and he said "I will count from five down to one and when I say one I will give you he needle to send you to sleep" I figured he was going to do it early when I didn't expect it and I was right he put the needle in my arm somewhere between 2-3 , the doctor moved so fast I didn't even see his hand although this may just be my memory since it was 7-8 years ago.

I remember waking up feeling very tired and quite ill, I wanted to be sick but I couldn't and a nurse came along and told me to keep my hand straight because the needle used was a bit too long, and it might catch something it shouldn't, but to compensate me they let me pick from 300 movies and three game console but it was really hard yo play them because of my right hand so I settled on a movie.

It was three hours since I woke up from the surgery and I still felt sick and I noticed other children been alowed to leave who had similar operations, so when a nurse went past I asked why this was she said that I may have had a reaction to the general anesthetic or there may have been an error in the dosage since I still felt sick. After another two hours I started feeling better I figured it was probably just a cold or nerves and I went home.

It was hard to speak (not that anybody else could tell) for about a month after I am guessing the doctor will advise you on activities you should and shouldn't do for a while after surgery.
