So I have a question, What are your thoughts on video games now ?

What I've come to realise is that games now a days have no thought into it or it's a rare site you will find a game that actually fun and made to your liking. Like back in the days most games couldn't look fancy and nice with the limitations on each console so all the time was put into the game play and the story, now people worry about graphic and not enough on the way the game plays or the story so there is always something left out or on a rare occasion we have it were it has both but not really. I wish games today had the same passion as back in the day.

Actually, even back then when games were 2D, developers put a lot of time into graphics, and even back then, people obsessed over graphics. I agree that recently, a lot of games started to feel more like interactive movies than actual games, and a lot of genres lack innovation, but you can't say that games in general lack depth. A lot of developers still put a lot of work in their games, and it really shows every now and then. What you can't deny is that good games of today are much better compared to old games, simply because the overall package is better. Graphics matter, but we're (or will be soon) reaching a point where ingame graphics almost resemble reality, so future developers will definitely have more time to spend on gameplay.

I live in a country where everybody plays either Call of Duty or Fifa. You can cross an entire state, you will not find a single child playing a Nintendo console. It's just like Nintendo consoles don't exist in Brazil.Either that,or they are way too costly. The Wii U has been recently released here in Brazil, but it costs R$2000,which is so costly, you would have to kill someone to get that kind of money. The games in the past weren't so costly, but,at the same time, they were very precious. In the past, people literally cared about gameplay, story and soundtrack, but now we are in a era where developers are wasting their time on graphics. We don't want better graphics,at least,i believe graphics have reached an optimum point.Since there is no need for better graphics, developers should put their time into creative, innovative games, just like the ones that have been released on the Wii.My problem with graphics,is that the developer that started it all was Nintendo.I'm going to tell you a little curiosity...did you know that the team that worked on the Playstation was originally the same team that worked on the SNES Playstation? They wanted to make consoles themselves, and they wanted to make them particularly different from the actual Nintendo consoles, and,of course,Nintendo didn't agree with their ideas. So,Nintendo dismissed the SNES Playstation team, and then they started to work alone on a new project...the Playstation System. And the rest, well,it's history. The result of such rivalry between those two comes from the fact that Nintendo didn't agree with Sony's ideas. It's almost like the apprentice rebelied agaisn't the master. Now,Nintendo has to suffer day after day, struggling to overcome Sony's tecnology and graphical advancements.Poor Nintendo...they were just starting to get on track, but then they got assailed by Sony and Sega. And later,Microsoft entered the fray too, which was somenthing not nice for Nintendo.Nowadays, even Sega has submitted themselves to Sony's mighty power. The PS1 didn't had any Sonic games, but the PS2...oh boy. That's another story. That's just when Sega got desperate, and when they were dismissed by Sony,Nintendo offered help.It makes-me feel like Sony is an evil overlord, and Nintendo is a divine goddess. All we can hope,is that in the future,Nintendo and Sony can co-exist in harmony.
When the world is in a state of peace, then that means somenthing is amiss. The world's default state is a state of war. -Me.

Right now, I think that games are mainly about graphics and online play. I mean, I buy and play games for the story, bot really for online play. About the online time I get online, it's for racing games, because I know I am good at those, and those are always new, and hard to hack.

Games nowadays are garbage.  They're all button-mashers with pretty graphics and no storyline and development.  They're either (a) military shooters, (b) sports games or (c) RPGs.  There's nothing else out there.  No creativity, no excellence in originality.... games are boring.  I play my PS2 still because I like it.  Today's stuff is all the same.

Games are also built for kids with no attention span.  There's no grinding out levels, there are always super-easy buttons to make things simple and games walk you through every little part and nuance with letting you discover and explore on your own.  FAQs are everywhere and save points are everywhere and games don't make you EARN it.

Old games made you earn it.  They meant something when you beat them.  Now you can beat a game in no time, move on to another game, and be done with it.

I feel bad for today's kids who never experienced the thrill of victory after frustrating loss after countless frustrating loss.  That was glorious back then.

Now?  Meh.

@warmaker: This is exactly what I was rejecting with my first post in this thread.
Yes, a lot of new games are garbage, probably even most of them. But it's kind of silly to call all of them bad, because there clearly are exceptions to this. Want an example? Play Rayman Origins.
Yeah, it has checkpoints so you don't have to redo the whole level again, but it definitely has a refreshing level of difficulty, and, while it may be a bit short, it's FUN. Especially if you play together with one or more people. Furthermore, it has, it its own way, absolutely beautiful graphics while still being a 2D game. So stop complaining about all contemporary games being bad as that simply isn't the case.

If you want games that aren't trash, you need to look more into niche titles. People get their attention caught by mainstream titles so much because they're mainstream. Whether you're just playing what's popular are disgusted by it, people really need to look beyond that to actually find the heart of gaming.

How can you expect to find the best the industry has to offer if you're looking only at the big names? Of course the next Final Fantasy game is going to be lackluster... but does that represent ALL RPGs? Of course not. Remember that Mass Effect is also a type of RPG, just a Western one and much different. Even among the Japanese-made RPGs, you can find things that are unique and innovative among the non-mainstream titles. You just need to look.

And let's not forget all the other genres and games so unique they can't properly be classified in a genre. There is more than just Sports, FPS, and RPG out there. You just need to actually open your eyes to it. There are simulation games, platformers, beat-em-ups, adventure games, fighting games, puzzle games...

If anything, there are MORE genres now than there were in the 2D days because people are inventing new ones all the time.

I actually find the culture more or less the same. I play all kinds of games. Some suck like call of duty, and some take my breath awayllike the indie game, Journey.

A lot of the more fun games today are Indie games.

But you still have strong companies. Studios like Rockstar, Naughty Dog, and Bethesda are responsible for some of the better games in this generation, followed by Nintendo, BioWare, and Obsidian.

A lot of people only look skin deep at gaming and miss a lot of the real gems out there.

Graphically there is no argument. Games will always look nicer as time goes on.

What HAS changed is that gamers have gotten too proud. Most of the ones I know here refuse to play indie games at all, insisting that "while games suck now, there is no way games made by a lesser known company can be any good".

That behavior pisses me off and is why I no longer talk about gaming around most friends. We just have different opinions on what a game is.

The good news is it takes all kinds in this world. That includes games as well as gamers.

What Do I Think Of Video Games Today?
Modern Games?
I hate to over use a phrase but its simple. ... "Attack Of The Clones."
Once you give someone the idea to make a ton of cash there are a dozen "Clones", and Very few Original Ideas floating around. Nearly all racing games are identical clones of one another. For Example.
Thanks to the Grand Theft Auto Series its now a Part of a Whole game as opposed to the entire game. Brilliance like this catches on I Love what happens next in Games. Mercenaries, Saints Row, You get the Idea.
Other times Its a bad thing. Like Golden-eye for the N.64 is great. Several "BAD" Bond Games Later and a few Million spent and Only one "Egghead" decides to look at the fact that its a "First Person Shooter" that was allot of peoples first.
Loads of great "F.P.S." games launch and the year 2001 Marks the Beginning of a Virtual War that will never end for many players. I love F.P.S. games but every now and again I groan at the sound of another sequel.
My favourite part about modern games is the music has evolved to not destroy our brains if we listen to the tracks too long. My biggest concern is, like many have stated before, is the lack of challenge in many of them. If it were not for games like "Ninja Gaiden Black" or "Devil May Cry", or "Porthole", Some of these games would only be better if you played them after a "kegger." (One of my favourite past times.) But thankfully those games are easy to spot and have been reported to and by the masses so effectively that very few have wasted too much time or cash for it to be a problem.
Though there is the big question that remains to be unanswered. Why are the easy ones apart of the franchises we Love and Respect?
I don't spend money on Final Fantasy any more. (Not since number 8.) But when I caught a Video on "Youtube" stating that the game plays itself?(One of the recent releases.) I would get unhinged to no end if I had spent money or waited for the thing to be released.
Its one thing to be underestimated. Its another matter to be outright insulted. The whole point of a game is to test and challenge skill or prowess. If you take that out of the equation there's no point in using the title "GAME" on your product.
Thankfully The Masses Again Prevailed With that issue. But every now and again there seems to be something that pops up and has no edge that's attached to one of our most beloved of series. This phenomenon is startling. I hope its a dying trend. It would really annoy me to no end to have to be Going to "keggers" regularly to get my game on. Or to be turned off from video games altogether. (I'm into saving my bucks. So witch option do you think I'd go with.)
Anyway I think there's allot of wonderful potential that will be realized.
With High Speed Internet and Games being apart of, at least half the known world. I think there's going to be great things going on for the coming years.
I hope.
Any Way that's me.
Good Luck to All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

I find most modern games to be very disappointing.  Almost all games seem to be clones of whatever is popular, and while that might be a good marketing technique, it also limits the types of games one can find.  For example, I LOVE rpg's, but it seems that ALL -true- rpg's have to have magic in them.  I refuse to play games with magic in them as a personal and religious choice, so it's a shame that there aren't any other options.  There are people who just.... don't like magic in their games, and they don't have a choice either.

Then too, all FPS's seem exactly the same.  The only difference from one to the next is that the bad guys are different, or you can used different guns.  And as a rule of thumb, ALL FPS's must be littered with cursing.  Most modern games don't even have a cuss or gore filter any more.

I just don't find any appeal in modern games. They're almost all the same.  I like variety, and older games had that at least.  Besides that, most modern games are WAY too easy.  Where's the challenge?  I like to feel like I've accomplished something when I win a game.

Hello Community,

Video games are pure fun, as long as they are played that way. Nowadays, I think only children's play video games, but it gives lots of learning.

Thanks and Regards,

With video games I don't want to play a game that looks fancy but has no story line or a story line that comes up very short, see I like a game  E.X. Nier it's game play sucks but what really makes me love that game is it's story, I find a lot of games are lacking in the story area or the ending of the game doesn't live up to the hype the beginning of the game and the middle drives it to be like the developers were like, OK time to end the game what's the most stupidest way we can end it guys? Well this is just my opinion and I really loved reading what you guys had to think about it and thanks.

The modern games, lets face it, are not as good as they used to be. Like for instance, practically all new games on Nintendo systems are too easy, and every other game is a FPS. There aren't enough good RPG games anymore, either. And the new games don't have much originality anymore. They all seem to be based off of a game that is almost exactly the same. There are still good games out there, but nobody nowadays can even experience having to try a level more than five times to be able to beat it. And if you do die that much, a cheat becomes available, and you can just skip the level.

The industry is going downhill if mobile games keep dominance. Angry Birds Star Wars? Lemme repeat, FREAKING STAR WARS!?!?!?! Same goes for if CoD keeps dominance. Black Ops II? Black Ops....II. And it has nothing to do with Black Ops One.

This generation's best console is PC. That's saying something.

See I feel like I was born to early, I was growing up with the n64 and by the time I was a teen I had the gamecube but I wish I was born earlier so when I was in my teens I was growing up with the nes and the snes and my teen years would of been the n64, So when I was a adult I would have all these games now and not really care. It sucks knowing the kids of this generation are going to grow up with CoD and s*** and not get the chance to experience classics like most of us did unless they are one of those kids that was born into classic games.

Games nowadays are still fun, but they lack ORIGINALITY.
A majority of games that you see on ANY system other than maybe the DS are first person shooters.
This was acceptable back in the days of the 64, when each game had something different to offer, but now they are all the same.
The designers are simply jumping onto the bandwagon, and this is NOT a good thing.
The games of today could be so much better...

Thing is we are hitting the same thing that happen before the nes, were going to have another video game depression where if we keep going at this rate we will see it in a few years unless we have that game changing experience like what super Mario brothers did. Lets just pray that video games don't hit the fan. Also I think they should bring back the nes, snes and games systems like that like what they are doing with the neo geo, hell start making games again for the nes and other consoles that might make most developers remember what passion was and what happen to it you never know.
