Metal Gear Solid is considered an Interactive-Action-Espionage game,in which you must complete stages, defeat bosses, and save hostages, but most importantly, you must do all this without being spotted. If you are spotted, you will enter the alert phase, and then my friend, you will have to run,and find a way to hide. It may look like a shooting game, but believe-me,it is not.
This version of Metal Gear Solid on the GBC takes a lot of what made MGS on the PSX great, and implements it into portability. The story is that a group of bad guys have acquired a massive weapon of mass destruction : Metal Gear. They will use it for their purposes, and believe-me,this weapon is powerful enough to induce full-scale war between all the nations of the world. Your codename is Snake, and your job is to infiltrate their base, and destroy Metal Gear.
It is almost an impossible mission, but do not fear. There are people who will give you a lot of support and information, and you will meet other characters along the way;some of them are mortal enemies, but some will try to help you. You will have to use all your weapons and items in order to traverse dangereous places, and remember, don't get spotted! If you do,your time is on the clock. The amount of extra life you can find in stages is pretty scarce, and fighting the enemy head-on is reckless and pointless. You will have to think a lot about the best course of action, but, sometimes, brute force is the only way.
When you reach Metal Gear, the story gets even more interesting. But i'm not going to spoil it. There is a versus mode, which i find quite useless for this kind of game.Metal Gear Solid is not a shooter,i repeat,Metal Gear Solid is not a shooter, understood? If you're not sure on your sneaking skills, you can warm up using the VR simulator. VR stands for Virtual Reality. In this world, you are safe from danger, and you must complete a variety of missions without being spotted.
The replay value of the game lies in the VR Simulator, and in the rankings you can get by finishing stages in the main game mode. The Graphics are incredibly detailed, they surely don't feel like GBC graphics. The soundtrack is quite astonishing too,it is really good, full of suspense and emotion. It is quite hard for a console like the GBC to have a soundtrack like that. There is not much more i can say about this game. That's just Metal Gear Solid in a nutshell.
You will make a lot of decisions in this game, and whether or not you can make it to the end...well,it will depend on those choices. It is an instant classic, certainly not the best GBC game ever, but still a fair match for the other GBC games. You will spend some time with this game if you're going for 100% completion. It is also a rather difficult game,so you will get frustrated a lot. But the game is forgiving, there are many checkpoints, and a lot of hiding places in case you get spotted. There is also a wide variety of weapons and gadgets, which help you immensely on your journey to destroy Metal Gear. The bosses are not ridiculously hard, and they follow certain patterns. Just follow the basic rules of espionage, and you will do just fine. Now,go and destroy Metal Gear, once and for all!
