Area 88 is under attack and it is up to you to save the good guys from disaster. U.N. Squadron is another shoot em up on the SNES, so love or hate 'em this is it. For me this game takes everything from the genre and does it right, not adding much to the standard recipe, but hey why fix what isn't broke.
The controls for the game are crisp and responsive, and also fairly basic. You have your directional buttons to control direction of course! Then the default controls are set to have X for changing weapons Y for firing your basic weapon and B for firing your special weapons. For my personal preference they make it easy to change this set up and I like to change the basic attack from Y to A since I just feel like A should be the most used button and in this game the default controls leave it unused.
This game has a more modern setting straying from the standard futuristic setting. I prefer this because it makes the game feel more realistic. Actually becoming immersed in my ship and feeling like I am in control of a fighter jet.
GRAPHICS: 9 I really like the graphics for this game. The intro right away took me into the game and had me impressed by the 3D effects. I was surprised at how well it was done for a SNES game. The game contains different levels that have unique themes that bring you into the games different areas. Their is also a lot of different enemy's and bosses that each look like proper time was spent giving them individuality. I think the only thing that may have been better done for this game would be flashier special effects for the explosions and different special weapons.
SOUND: 8 I enjoyed the games soundtrack and thought the music was fitting for the games theme. The different levels also have their own songs so you are not left hearing the same music over and over. Again one thing that may have been done better was the games special effect sounds for when you use your weapons.
ADDICTIVENESS: 9 For me shoot 'em ups are just innately addicting games to play. Maybe it is because I'm not especially good at them so it takes me forever to actually get anywhere in them ahaha. The game also has a well made score system creating the competitive edge to top everyone else's score on vizzed.
STORY: 7 Shoot em ups are not really games played for their story's so as usual the story for the game is fairly basic. You are the pilot of a fighter jet and you must destroy the attacking enemy's.
DEPTH: 9 The game has plenty to do for a shoot em up. It contains multiple levels so you will have plenty of places to go. The game allows you to upgrade your jet through earning cash by completing missions and destroying enemy's. This adds a lot of fun to the game allowing you to customize your jet. You are allowed to choose between 3 Pilots being Shin Kazama, Micky Schymon or Greg Gates. Each pilot has his own advantages between being able to repair quicker, having improved maneuverability or better weapons. I personally find Greg Gates, the pilot who is allowed to repair quicker, my favorite due to my poor piloting and constantly getting hit I need his fast repairs to keep me alive longer.
DIFFICULTY: 9 Like I said, I'm not all too good at these games and I often find them pretty difficult and this game is no different. For me, I need to get a good feel for the levels by playing and dieing but getting to see the enemys patterns. After quite a bit of practice I can finally get a good rhythm going and finally accomplish something but it does take practice and could become frustratingly difficult.
OVERALL: 8 Overall I really enjoyed this game, and think it's a great game to get into the action quickly for fast fun. For haters of shoot em ups don't play this game because that is this game and I doubt it would change anyone's mind about the genre. Although the game should cater well to fans of Gradius or RType who couldn't get enough because it is just the same or anyone interested in a good introduction to classic shoot em up games.
