Hello, Pandora Koopa here.

I would like to ask you all a question and feel free to reply (well, that isn't up to me! ). What are YOUR feelings about Super Mario Brothers 2? I feel it is my least favorite Mario game, but I still saw it as fun. It's just that it didn't fit in with the other Mario Games. I mean no Goombas, Koopas, ? Blocks, or Bowser. Not only that, but it took Mario's "fighting" style to a more advanced level. Simply jumping on enemies didn't kill them, instead you had to either use other enemies you picked up or by plucking a turnip out of the ground.

Now that I have said my opinion, you can post yours now!

I liked it to a certain extent, but it's not one that I like to play unless I'm extremely bored. I'd much rather pick up Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World instead.

I like the different style they gave it, but I would only play when I'm in the mood for a game that was a little different, same with Zelda II, not my favorite but still fun.

I like it. It is definitely not as fun as either the first or third Super Mario Bros. games, but I enjoyed it. I liked the change in gameplay, but I'd still rather play basically any other game in the Super Mario series.

I actually happen to find it the best in the original NES trio. You get four different characters to give you different play-styles, addictive music, and a different plot to the usual, which is kind of nice. For once, the princess gets to be a hero, her first hero role in the series, along with Toad's.

Love the game so much, I have been hunting down and playing hacks or remakes of it on the site, haha.

I think the problem with this is that it is not a bad game. I personally love it. The thing that rubs people the wrong way is the fact that the playable characters are Mario characters. Now, let me explain what I mean. This game was not originally a Mario game. This is actually a game called Doki Doki Panic:

https://www.vizzed.com/play/doki-doki-panic-(english-translation)-fds-online-famicom-disk-system-36484-game

Now, Nintendo literally took this game, and replaced the 4 hero characters with 4 Mario Characters. They didn't change anything else. Not the enemies, levels, anything. So what you can do is play Doki Doki Panic. It makes it easier to judge it as it's own game rather than judge it as a Mario game. It really is a great game. But because Nintendo took it and put Mario characters in it, people can't help but compare it to other Mario games, which makes it look bad.

This game was not nintendos best work. 2 is kind of nintendos trademark "We should throw out everything before, and then after we realize our mistake we will make a super awesome third game" For example, Super Mario 2, and then super Mario 3. And Zelda 2 (Which I personally think is an alright game,I liked the spells in it) and a link to the past arguably one of the best Zelda games. So nitendo, I love you guys, and your experiments bring in some things I like (like the magic meter in legend of Zelda, implemented in Zelda 2) but you have to stick to the script sometimes

rcarter2 :

Actually, they did do a few sprite and music edits. 1-Ups, Mushrooms, and the magic potions to open doors were originally different; 1-Ups were the character's head of the one you are playing, hearts were given instead of mushrooms to extend life, and magic potions were originally magic maps. Also the music behind the magic lamp doors did not have the Mario tune in it, but Doki Doki's themes song (which is also heard when you get a Star)..They also took out an Albino Mouser to replace it with... something else, I forget what.

And in Doki Doki, to complete the game you had to beat every level with every character. Nintendo changed the game just enough to make it seem more like Mario, as well as a few enhances and bug fixes (waterfalls used to stream so fast in doki, and Pow blocks were not animated).

ruesen : Yeah, I don't know why that didn't even come to mind. *derp*.

Regardless, those are super small changes. The game is still Doki Doki panic.

Honestly it was really nothing I was completely interested in, though I'd be lying if I said I hated it, but to its merit it did introduce some of the enemies we love to hate so much and it is a rather difficult, but fair game. It's okay, nothing short of good, but compared to Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World, my favorite game, it is really nothing to be excited over :/

I've know that the game is Doki Doki Panic for a long time. Nintendo was in a hurry to make another Mario release, they saw Doki Doki Panic, Said AH HA! and put them in that game. that's the story really.

I like it, but not so much as the ones after it. You have to hand it to them though, I mean, it wasn't another clone like "lost levels" (the actual SM sequel), it was an attempt at a new route even though it was an almost perfect clone of another game. Still with the first two being identical in design and pretty much everything, they showed initiative in surprising everyone with this huge departure from the rut they were making. It threw us all for a loop, but at least it kept us from more clones. Risk rewarded, Nintendo.

I enjoyed it even though it was a complete copy of doki doki panic.
Nintendo felt super mario bros 2: the lost levels were too hard for the US and Europe
So they just smacked together a game which hadn't been released outside of Japan.

It was sort of Nintendo's experiment to see if they took an off-brand game, changed to a widely known character like Mario if it would catch on. The worst experiment they ever but a noteworthy one. Plus the original SMB2 was shrouded in mystery as the Lost Levels. It was eventually released in the US in All-Stars but it took almost ten years to get the game in it's entirety over here. Yeah. We had to wait TEN FRICKING YEARS! Nice job Nintendo.

It was kind of fun to hear about Doki doki panic. I mean, the Super mario I thought was so cool and innovative in the series was actually just a remake of a game that was made of some silly Japanese tv-show? Well, it still really stands out in the series, like it or not. And I really saw it as fun and interesting. Why? Well I dont know... Super mario 3 after that was more "back to roots" and seemed like a step back in level design in a way.

apeman : No the worst experiement was the one with Phillips that became the CD-i Mario and Zelda games ;-)

As far as SMB is concerned, it's not like there had been some huge history with the franchise. It was one game, and you know what? It's more interesting than the Japanese version of Super Mario 2, I can tell you that. All that game was was basically a re-hash with some new levels. Nothing too interesting.
