Welcome back to Sonic 2 month and today, we'll be looking at the European/Japanese version of Sonic CD. Why this particular version of the game? Because the music's better, but I'll get to that later. Sonic CD is considered by some to be the best Sonic game ever created. It's also widely considered one of the only games worth playing on the Sega CD (or Mega CD if you want to get technical about it). That said, let's dive right in to this time traveling adventure shall we?

Graphics
     Sonic's sprite is very similar to his Sonic 1 sprite, but with a few new animations. Just about all the other sprites are completely new though, so it makes up for that. The enemies are all different from just about any previous enemies. The levels are VERY bright and colorful, except for the bad future parts of the levels. The backgrounds are very nicely done and fit with their respective stages. The special stages are in a sort of 3D mode and they look pretty good, even if the 6th one's background is extremely trippy. One thing I don't really like is the look of Eggman's (or Robotnik, I really don't care what you call him) "Eggmobile". I don't know why, but it just looks really weird in this game. Other than that though, I really like the way this game looks.

Sound
     The music is simply amazing, at least the EU/JAP soundtrack is. I honestly really like this soundtrack over the American soundtrack. Really, the only track I liked better from the American soundtrack was the opening, I prefer "Sonic Boom" over "You Can Do Anything" a.k.a. "Toot Toot, Sonic Warrior". Other than that, this soundtrack is vastly superior to the U.S. soundtrack (by the way, this is coming from an American XD). I especially love the Stardust Speedway Bad Future music in this version and apparently, everyone else does too, I mean after all, it is this version that gets all the remixes. A very good soundtrack to say the least, but then again, this IS a Sonic game. Definitely one of the best Sonic soundtracks in history, but there are better ones in my opinion.

Addictiveness
     This game has got this section going for it, with Past, Bad Future, and Good Future versions of each level, you're sure to come back and try to play through them all. The levels are also pretty fun to explore, definitely adding to the addicting qualities of this game. To be honest though, I don't really play this game too often, although that may simply be because the new port is very much superior in just about every way however, so I don't blame that on the game itself. It really is an addicting game and I think you'll find yourself playing this quite a few times.

Story
     Once again, yes this game DOES have a story and so do all the classic games, it's just that you've got to read the manual in order to know what exactly the plot is, so here's my summary. While heading to Never Lake with new character, Amy (who, in the U.S. manual was mistaken for Sally somehow, gotta love American failures) to see Little Planet, which appears once a year, Sonic sees that Little Planet is chained to a giant rock. Amy is kidnapped by a mysterious figure and taken to Little Planet. Eventually realizing that Eggman was behind all of this, Sonic sets out to find not just Amy, but the Time Stones as well, which are hiding in random locations on the planet and have the power to control time (go figure right?). So there's your story, again, not a very long one, but it does its job and at least gives you Sonic's motivation.

Depth
     There are a total of 7 levels in the game, each with 3 acts. There are also 7 Special Stages because of the 7 Time Stones. The levels are as follows: Palmtree Panic, Collision Chaos, Tidal Tempest, Quartz Quadrant, Wacky Workbench, Stardust Speedway, and Metallic Madness. There are Past, Present, and Good/Bad Future versions of each Zone to explore as well. You automatically start in the Present version (*gasp* Really? That's astonishing!) except for the third act of each stage where you're in the Future version (The Good/Bad version depends on if you either got the Time Stones or destroyed the roboticizers in the Past) and you fight the boss. Speaking of bosses, let's talk about those for just a second here. The bosses in this game are very unique compared to the bosses of Sonic 1 and 2 seeing as how in this game, it doesn't really depend on how many times you can hit him, heck, sometimes you don't even need to hit it at all. With Metal Sonic, another new character, all you do is race him. I actually like this approach to the boss fights and I really wish they'd bring back these boss fight styles in the future. The stages are also built more vertical than horizontal, so there is quite a bit to explore, but this also means it will be very tough to find some roboticizers. Each level also has time-travel signs in certain locations allowing you to go either forward or backward in time. This game definitely has a lot to offer in terms of depth, but to be completely honest, I like my Sonic levels built horizontally rather than vertically, it makes the game a bit more fun in my opinion.

Difficulty
     This game isn't too difficult, especially after you play it a bit. The only things that really make this game difficult in any way are finding the roboticizers and the bosses, well some of them anyway. The final boss can be a bit of a pain considering there's no way to beat him without getting hit at least once (or at least no way that I know of). That's really all I've got to say about the difficulty sadly as there's really not much of it.

Gameplay/Controls
     The controls for this game are pretty much the same as any classic Sonic game. The D-pad moves Sonic left or right and lets you look up and down. Pressing any button will allow you to jump. Pressing down while running allows you to roll. The spin dash is also in this game, but it got a very significant downgrade from Sonic 2. To spin dash, simply hold down and press any button, the part about this that's different is that in order to actually perform the spin dash, you have to let it charge completely before releasing it. The more favorable special move, which is only available in this game sadly, is the Super Peel-Out. Performing this is identical to the spin dash, except you hold up instead of down, also you don't have to wait for this one to charge completely before release. In order to travel through time, you need to find a sign that says either "Past" or "Future", then run at top speed for a certain amount of time. In order to enter Special Stages, you collect 50 rings, then jump into the giant ring at the end of the stage. The Special Stages are very different from any others however, as in these, you have to find the UFOs in random locations of the stage and destroy them within a certain time limit and touching any water in the stage will drop your time left down by 10 seconds, so try not to touch any.

Overall, this is a fun experience, but to me, it's not as good as the first game. It's definitely something worth checking out, but I highly recommend the newer port as it makes just about everything better. Since we're talking about the original however, I give it an 8.5 out of 10. Join me next time for Sonic 3!
