Worms

OverallGraphicsSoundAddictivenessStoryDepthDifficulty
6.6897--36

Overall: 6.6

While not nearly being as simple as some of the MAME games, Worms still is a ratherb un-complicated game. A new game begins in an unmarked territory that is randomly generated with several "armies" of worms placed on the map. The game plays out as a turn-based free-for-all war in which you must attack the other worms and try to kill them before they kill you.  To achieve this, you get ten weapons (Bazooka, Grenade, Cluster Bomb, Shotgun, Uzi, Fire Punch, Dragon Ball, Dynamite, Airstrike, Teleport)  that you can choose to attack with each turn (one attack per turn). Each weapon achieves a different effect which can prove more or less effective in each situation. You also have to be careful because it's extremely easy to injure yourself in the blast from the weapons - especially the Bazooka. Oh, and when Worms die, they give off a small explosion that damages any nearby items.

Another neat fact about Worms is that the weapons damage the terrain as quickly and easy as it does the worms that just so happen to be caught in the blast. I have personally seen people use this fact to their advantage to create tunnels and valleys to "trap" other worms.

Graphics: 8

Giving allowance to the fact that Worms is a particularly old game on an equally old console, it has some pretty damned decent graphics. Earning an "8" from me, Worms' graphics manages to cover all the neat little weapons and AOE effects while still maintaining a high image quality [for the age of the system and game, anyhow].

Sound: 9
There's not much that you can say about sound, really; it was clean. Worms' sound is not choppy and plays well. (Although, like all other sound, repetitive listening makes it really old and annoying.) There's no lag to the sound. All of the sound effects are appropriate and work nicely with the game.

Addictiveness: 7
Worms is a rather addictive game; I don't normally care for games similar to Worms. However, Worms has a unique appeal with the battle to master the various weapons as well as puzzle out the best strategy to take out your opponents.

Story: -
To the best of what I can see (and my knowledge...), Worms does not have a story. Can't exactly get a rating in a category that Worms does not have, right?

Depth: 3
Worms earns a "3" from me in the Depth category. This is due to the fact that the game is completely centered around killing the other worms with no story, little scenery, and only a handful of weapons. It's like taking the "guessing" part and mystery part out of Clue and making it just about the people trying to kill each other.

Difficulty: 6
Worms is not an insanely difficult game. Really, the most difficult part about it is trying to avoid splash damage and get your weaponry around the terrain. There's a little bit of strategy in playing with other people, but by yourself? Worms garners a nice "6" in the difficulty category.

So Worms isn't exactly the most difficult, demanding game on the market but it definitely requires at least a little bit of understanding of how the weapons affect you and the terrain. This particular game has no story, little to offer in the way of depth but still holds an appeal. For a SNES game, Worms has good graphics and really damn good sound. And while this game isn't the first one on my Wishlist, it definitely has replay value - especially if you play it with other people.

This is a useful and informative review.  Thanks Ktanaqui.
It's a bit hard to review the arcade games I know, so you did an impressive job!

I love all the fancy formatting in this review. Though you have WAY too much space between the title screen image and your ratings table. Might wanna avoid that next time.

Worms is one of the games I played as a kid and was maybe more addicted to it than was reasonable. I know it wasn't the greatest game in the world, but something about it was still fun and special to me. Now it's a really nostalgic game and I love anything that reminds me of it (like there was a PC game about a decade ago called "Gunbound" that I loved because it was similar in gameplay).

There was one game that I played one that was very similar to worms but it had a story mode and all. I want to know what it was. As for the space - yea, I didn't do that. I'm trying to figure out why it keeps occurring so I can fix it. Thank you

I fixed the space between at the top, you can take a look at what I did to the code. The way you had it with the spaces between each tag caused it to not format correctly.

Also I removed the image of the title screen, renamed the title, and added it as the primary review on the game page. All this was to have it look the way it's supposed to on the game page.

Alright, thank you. I really wasn't sure what was causing it. xD Mind if I keep the format, otherwise?

I don't mind the format. Just make sure when a review is posted that it looks ok on the game page, for example paragraph and table alignment.

How is it that you got the table to work on the game page? The game page was behaving like it ignores HTML.

I dunno, I saw it on the game page as the way it looked on the forum. I removed the spaces between each tag in order to remove the gap that was between the title and the review.

Also, I added an ending tag for the center tag of the title, because before you had the entire review centered with just the opening center tag.

I think there's going to be times that you can't format a lot of stuff like you would in the source of the website, if that makes any sense.

Ah, got it. It didn't look right for me on the webpage until you "fixed" it. Thanks though - I'll make sure to remember that closing tag. (I kept meaning to go add it in.)

It's not necessarily the closing tag that fixed it. Here's another review you've submitted with the same format which I fixed without the ending center tag:

https://www.vizzed.com/playonlinegames/game.php?id=4938

Anyways, the reviews are good, lol, I think this discussion is off-topic. Perhaps it can be continued in the staff forum if needed.
