For a while now I've been searching the Internet for games I could like on the PS2, needless to say I haven't had any luck. I decided the smartest way to find what I want is to post the games I like and give details on why I like them. While I was staying with my fiancé I played some of his PS3 games, he had a few popular series such as the GTA and Silent Hill series, however I couldn't get into those. The ones I did get into were The Elder Scroll series and Fallout 3, I liked Fallout 3 more though, since you could use guns and the setting seemed more unique than Skyrim's.

Fallout 3:
-I loved the post-apocalypse environment
-I loved the old time music
-The option to use both first person and third person
-Variety of weapons
-Good storyline along with many side quests
-Character customization is a plus, but not necessary.
-Very important The addition of humor into the game (Moira Brown, as annoying as she could get, was probably my favorite character since she added humor to a serious situation)

A few game options that I've found, but I'm not too sure about are Devil May Cry, God of War, and Metal Gear Solid. So if you could also tell me if I could like those, based on what I like about Fallout, that would be great. Remember, I'm looking for PS2 games, please don't recommend PS3 games since I don't have one. So thanks for taking time to read this, and I hope to get replies.

Well, since you have a PS2 you could try out Persona 3:FES and Persona 4. Both are good JRPGs with great stories, likeable characters, and perfect music.

NameEntry :  Turn based fighting? I love RPGs, but I'm not usually able to finish them due to way too much grinding.

I agree with NameEntry; Persona 3 and Persona 4 would be a good option; they both have a good storyline, weapons variety, and some humor. I would say play Persona 3 as it will give you an idea on what Persona 4 would be like. Now as to the games you listed...

Grand Theft Auto: Yeah by what you listed, this wouldn't be the ideal selection.

Silent Hill: This could be a good option as its somewhat apocalyptic environment, variety of weapons, and good storyline. But it depends on what Silent Hill game you played on your Fiance's PS3. If you wouldn't mind; could you tell me what Silent Hill games you played?

Devil May Cry: My favorite series if you ask me. Has a lot of humor (most sarcastic humor), decent storyline, and a variety of weapons. However this is more of a Beat em Up style game compared to Fallout 3 which is more RPG style game. Its very fun to play thou. I would suggest playing Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening as this was the best game of the series and would best fit your criteria. You may not like the lack of character customization, apocalytic environment, and music (all hard core rock n roll). Give the game a shot and see how it goes.

God of War: If you didn't like GTA, then your not going to like God of War. It is very fun, but its a lot of blood, violence, and has some sex scenes (all of camera, but you still hear it). You can try God of War 1 since the rest of the games is an improvement of the 1st; but I bet you won't like it.

Metal Gear Solid: This could be a good idea. This has a variety of weapons, good story, and customization. Try playing Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater as I bet that you'll enjoy that game.

If your don't mind playing some old school PS1 games on your PS2. You can try these games as they are similar to Fallout 3 (at least to me)...

Final Fantasy 7-10
Legend of the Dragoon
Alone in the Dark
Resident Evil 1,2,3
Psychonauts
Bully (I more "fun, kid friendly" version of GTA)
Castlevania: Curse of Darkness

Lol, ok, so I guess I have to try Persona now.

As for Silent Hill, I tried 2 and 3 as those were the more popular ones he had. He also gave me his PSP since he didn't use it, and Silent Hill: Origins is among the few games he had for it. In those games I found myself walking around, not quite sure where to go, and in 2 at least...I don't know, it just seemed like when I tried to make James attack most of the time it didn't. I don't know if it was something temporarily wrong with the button, but I lost my patience.

God of War: I actually borrowed a friends copy, and I loved it. The blood, sex, and violence didn't bother me at all. I don't consider it similar to GTA, I like the environment of God of War and I constantly wanted to know more about the story.

Metal Gear Solid seemed promising, so now I definitely want to try it out along with Devil May Cry.

I'm definitely ok with trying old school PS1 games, I just hope I can find ones that are still playable, most PS2 games I find aren't playable.
Out of that list, Resident Evil is one I can't play, I love zombies, but they also scare the crap out of me. Just the idea of being pursued by a slow moving, or fast, flesh eating monster is enough to give me nightmares. At least in those nightmares I have perfect aim with a gun though. I always like the stories in Final Fantasy, so I'll definitely give those a shot.

Thanks for that list, I hope I can enjoy hours of fun with those games.

By the way, isn't there an Alone in the Dark game on this site? Maybe it was for the GBA.

Well there is a great bit of grinding but for good reason.

The higher your level, the better personae you can equip. You don't have to get to level ninety-nine to finish the game, but you have to get that level to unlock the strongest persona in the game.

Also in Persona 4 you can gain what amounts to loot and sell this loot for money. This is your main way of making money to spend on weapons, armor, and items. BUT what you sell at least a certain number of much of the loot, you unlock new weapons, armor, and other items like rings. Many of these give abilities and such that can only be found on higher level persona so are well worth the grinding and extrta money earned.

NameEntry :  Hmm.. Well I'll give you an example of what I hate, I love Pokémon, but I often hate catching new ones since I need to level them up, it wouldn't be bad, but the pattern continues on and on. I know that's one case where people don't mind, but unfortunately I do. Persona  is sounding similar, but I'll give it a shot regardless.

But what happens is you have the persona equipped and it basically allows you to battle. Whatever the persona is strong/weak against becomes your strengths and weaknesses. The persona's skills become your skills. It is quite possible, later in the game, to make a persona which voids all but one type of damage.

Just look up footage on YouTube or something. I can't really explain terribly much without telling you everything about the game. There's not a certain number of times you can use an ability, there's MP that each character has. Also there's a limited number of skills a persona will learn so when you gain levels, even a lower level persona just can't do the damage needed or take care of a situation a persona higher up in the arcana can do.

It's actually not that much like pokemon  and I think that the game itself is mature enough to shrug off the few similarities.

michelle1091 : Sorry about not seeing your post (next time just click reply post as it will summon me with a notice that you responded). Well I'm glad that you enjoyed God of War. I'm not sure if Alone in the Dark is on Vizzed, but you should play the PS1: Alone in the Dark: A New Nightmare as that one is considered the best of the series. If you enjoyed Final Fantasy, then I would recommend Legend of the Dragoon as it is similar to Final Fantasy, but it has a different battle system (best I can describe it; it uses a QTE-style battle system).

Silent Hill is not suposed to be about attacking the enemies its more about running away from enemies unless its a boss (unless you play some of the Modern Silent Hill games, then that is not the case). I would have recommended Fatal Frame as its a combination of Silent Hill (enviornment, creepyness) and Resident Evil (in terms of enemies...except they are Ghosts and not Zombies); but if you didn't like Resident Evil, you definitly not going to like Fatal Frame.

Just a warning on the Devil May Cry series if your going to try it out. The first one is a good one, but its considered the 2nd in the series in terms of story and it doesn't have as much customization as the 3rd. Avoid the 2nd game at all costs as its considered the worse of the series and you might never want to play a Devil May Cry game after playing 2 (its that bad). 4 is good, but the main character of the series is replaced with another character and some customization become diminished from 3 to 4. There is however another Devil May Cry game coming out soon for PS3 (its a reboot) so you could wait a little bit to play that game (you can check out some videos of the game in action to know what its about).

Oldschool41 :  I thought I was clicking reply to post, I must have messed up that time, or maybe I've been clicking the wrong button. Yeah, Alone in the Dark is on here for GBC actually, but I'll just ignore that one and give the PS1 a chance. Are any of the games listed a fps?

michelle1091 : Alone in the Dark would be considered a third person shooter (its similar to Resident Evil 2, 3 in that it uses fixed camera angles). Devil May Cry is mostly hack and slash, but if you use a certain style then it can become a third person shooter. Legend of the Dragoon is an RPG. Fatal Frame is a Survival Horror Game that is First Person Shooter.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is a Third Person Shooter (that I remember, its been a while). Resident Evil: Dead Aim, I know is an FPS-style game, but thats only when your aiming the gun. I'll try to find some FPS PS2 Games that I've played, but none of the games I've posted are FPS (well Fatal Frame kind of is).

Oldschool41 :  For Metal Gear Solid, is it easy enough to aim while in third person? I know in Fallout it's easier to aim in first person.

michelle1091 : From what I can remember it was pretty easy (again this is just Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.) I'm kind of sandwhiching your thread so if you have any other questions go to my profile and send me a message there if you have any other questions.

For a PS2? I loved my Playstation 2... I have to say that my most frequented games were probably Burnout 3: Takedown and The Bard's Tale (which is just absolutely hilarious but inappropriate for younger ages).

Ktanaqui :  Actually, The Bards Tale sounds incredibly fun. The type of game sounds like something I've played before, but I can't think of it.

If you are into platformer/shooting games I suggest you try the Ratchet and Clank series. Especially the second and third game. They are very
addicting and fun to play.

I say Jak 1, 2 and 3. They are fun platformers I rotted my brains playing. In Jak 2 and especially in Jak 3 you can explore tons of apocalyptic open world areas- stuff from GTA, and Fall Out (GTA: Open world. Fall Out 3: Apocalyptic areas EVERYWHERE!)

I just wanna give a quick note on the earlier Persona suggestions if you haven't tried them yet... your earlier grind concerns are very valid for this series. Particularly if you wish to play Persona 3:FES and are doing the after-story entitled "The Answer". That portion of the game is pretty much ALL grinding with very little story thrown in between. It's ridiculously hard just for the sake of being hard... which is kinda what the game is in general, but this is amplified.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Persona, but I wouldn't recommend that game to someone who doesn't care for grinding. It's very difficult to overcome statistically differences without a fair amount (though enemies are displayed on the screen, so you're able to avoid battles if you so desire). If you do decide to play any version of Persona 3, I would recommend the PSP version. This gives you the option of playing as a female character and has been made a lot more bare-able of a game to play difficulty-wise. It borrows some new things added in Persona 4 which makes it not so crappy to play. Persona 4 is an excellent game in my opinion, by the way.

If you do like RPGs, I recommend series like Tales (try Tales of the Abyss if you're looking for PS2). This has a real-time battle system that gives you the ability to overcome statistical differences with pure skill (since you can dodge attacks), meaning you don't necessarily hafta grind just to win. It has a serious story that can get a bit sad at times... but still has its lighthearted moments and some characters that are just cartoonishly weird.

Unfortunately, I don't really play any post-apocalyptic games, so I can't offer you anything on that.
