Also, you can't really quarantine a disease like H1N1 these days.

exactly.... that Australia case is a prime example. 1 person shows up that has the virus.... so you round up everyone on the place... except everyone on the plane (100, 200? people) have all come in contact with at least 1 other person (direct contact minimum) but probably close to the range of 5-10 at least. So your 100 people that might be infected has just gone up to 500-1000.... and all those people probably contacted at least 5-10 people before realizing they were sick so now you have 2500-10000 people potentially infected.... and that's just Australia.

Now I'm not suggesting we purposely get everyone sick but trying to prevent H1N1 from spreading seem futile.

Because it isn't possible. The second the people exit the plane, the virus gets into the airport and will find its way into the people there. Also, it isn't that bad of a disease, so let it take its course while scientists trying to find a cure like they do for most diseases.

well, there won't be a cure since it's a virus, but they can add it to the yearly flu vaccine at least.... other than that it'll probably just end up being yet another version of the flu that people can get.... and it'll kill some people.... that's what happens. That's life.

That's what I meant

but so far, it really seems like the regular flu is more of a killer than this one.

The hype over this flu has been so annoying! My friend said she went to school at CSU Fullerton in Orange County and people were walking around wearing f***ing masks like people in China did during the SARS outbreak.

My school, CSU Long Beach, had the first confirmed case in Los Angeles County. We had no masks, even though the city called a health alert. All they really did was encourage people to maintain healthy habits to prevent them from falling ill, like getting enough sleep and water. Honestly, I liked Obama's advice best: cover your mouth when you cough and don't forget to wash your hands. No medicine, no masks, just plain common sense.

But if the media can make a ridiculous hype about it and get more attention, then why not do that? (sarcasm, by the way)

well, they can do it if they want to.... but I think there is a moral obligation for the media to report truthfully about things, not that they actually follow it anymore it seems....

I personally think that part of the reason why stories like this go so much attention is so that the government can get some things done quietly while the media is so focused on other issues. I mean during the big week or 2 of H1N1 coverage, how many stories about the government were there? Besides reports about what they were doing to avert the "crisis".... probably not very many.

The media is in the business of selling news.... and if a pig flu virus gets attention then they report on it....

same thing happened with Octo-mom, or Jon and Kate Plus 8, or the FLDS compounds. They are stories while for a week or 2 at the most and then people get bored.... usually because nothing very new happens. Although the story will come up every once in a while for the next year or more if something worth talking about does happen...

Oh, the news station I listen to still talked about other stuff that was going on, but seriously the flu talk was just annoying. That major earthquake in Mexico City only got like twenty minutes of air time, which I took as blessed relief from the damn flu talk.

In comparison, the 4.7 quake we had here last night was the talk of the news for a good two or so hours.

yeah, but if no one is actually dying then it's not worth spending too much time on.... I'm sure tomorrow it will already be old news.... unless gas lines have broken and buildings start blowing up

in reference to the Mexico City earthquake or the 4.7 one in Elara's area?

anyway, we could go on for a while about how the media doesn't cover the right stories etc. but that is a little too far off topic. It could be the subject of a new thread.

U.S. UPDATE: 5,710 cases with only 8 deaths. I'M SOOOOO SCARED

Don't forget that all of the deaths were due to combinations with other conditions like being very very young or having other health problems... just like regular flu death *gasp*

And while the death toll in Mexico is much higher, that is largely due to people that live in poor areas that don't have access to proper health care. It happens. It sucks, but it happens.

I heard that the swine flu is getting worse and that it started in Mexico (duh!). Also that some people died after getting the flu shot which is unusual.

Well I know a fair few vaccines (including the flu shot) have some dead virus cells in them.
In other words, the flu shot has dead flu cells in it.
Not sure if that was what tr33l3x was meaning, but there you go.

DH: I think tr33l3x thinks that people don't know that vaccines aren't totally innocent and harmless things.

Yet, I seem to see millions of people get them and survive.... I personally think the vaccine regimine needs to be spread out a little bit because there are things in vaccines that aren't exactly "good" for you... but the overall effect of a vaccine is better than the detrimental effects in my opinion. And spreading those out would be an even better thing.

Some vaccines should be personal choice (like flu) and others shouldn't be.
