The Atari Lynx had technical capabilities that were miles ahead of its competitors, but why did it fail. Here's two reasons,
1 It drained batteries.
2 The games were BAD.
Sure they looked nice, but they are either boring or very difficult. Hydra is a prime example, its a great concept, but its difficult and boring.
GAMEPLAY D: Why is the DOWN button the acceleration button!! You would expect it to be one of the numerous buttons on the Lynx, or at least the up button! So why on earth is it down! That's only one of the problems that make the gameplay so low and mediocre. Another thing is the fact the the collision detection sucks. You shoot the enemies it looks like you shot them but they don't get destroyed! It seems like luck for a little enemy to die! It seems impossible to dodge bullets making this game so freaking frustrating!! However there is a few good things about the gameplay. I like how easy it is the switch special weapons, that's a good thing. Also, despite the frustration you will have. The anger will only push you to do better and shoot like a maniac. This case is common in many Lynx games. The graphics blow your mind, but you DON"T enjoy your self. Isn't that the point of a video game! I thought Atari was good at that, they did a good job with the gameplay on their previous systems games, so why screw it up with the Lynx? There are a few games on that handheld that don't have that god awful "curse."
GRAPHICS A-: The visuals might look like garbage by today's standards, but if you think about it the graphics are amazing! Each difficulty has several different areas that look very detailed and good looking. The visuals are very pixelated, but they look quite good for the Lynx.
SOUND C: There's not much music in the game, the sound effects are alright I'll give the sound a C
ADDICTIVENESS D-: I was really wanting the game to end. I really did, the only reason I stayed on was because I was doing a review for it. So I'll tell you right now. That this game is boring, it might be good for killing 5 minutes of time, but other then that the game is extremely boring.
DEPTH A: With lots of levels, and a HUGE variety of weapons. Hydra has a lot to offer for a Lynx game. The Lynx games came in small compact cards that were the size of a cartridge but thin as a credit card. So for a tiny little card, this game has as much to offer as a Game Boy game.
DIFFICULTY MEDIUM HARD: This game is quite frustrating, but the difficulty level rises quite steadily.
OVERALL RATING C-
Tips
