I noticed that there seems to be no topic regarding these games, which kind of surprises me. I am curious as to who plays these games and what you have achieved. I love them... but I'm not that good at them. I have a nasty habit of restarting and not actually accomplishing much. (lol) Any game that has "Tycoon" in the name fits here - regardless of who made it.

- What's your favorite? I'm torn between Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection and RollerCoaster Tycoon 3: Platinum Edition.
- Which ones do you own? RollerCoaster Tycoon, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2: Wacky Worlds Expansion, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3: Platinum Edition, Mall Tycoon, SeaWorld Tycoon (Adventure Parks)
- Have you ever owned any others? Which ones? Yea, I have. I used to own Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection. The Marine Mania disc got worn out so much that it simply quit working so I have to replace it. Thankfully, there's a store (OfficeMax) down the road from me that sells it for $10. I just have to get the $10 now.

I tend to fail more than I succeed - the people are REALLY hard to please. I've been most successful with RCT3 though. I'm thinking about trying a No-Currency Sandbox and seeing if I can make a park I like. I tried once before (with currency) on RCT2, I believe. Took screenshots and then slideshowed them into this video:

It was fun... until I realized that it was failing. Badly. Long story short: that park got deleted. I intend to re-try with RCT3, though.

So! Share your stories, parks, pictures and videos.

I love the roller coaster tycoon games. The first and second were some of my favorite games ever on the PC (even though they were extremely similar to each other). The third one kinda let me down, but really that's just because I prefer the simple graphics of the first two. I don't know why, maybe it's nostalgia. But the way it looks just kept me from being able to enjoy it.

As for stories, I only have one worth telling that I can remember. I built a big roller coaster, one of the ones that goes pretty slow but turns really sharply, and I ran a test for it. The first turn was far enough from the start that every car was launched before the first one got to it, which was what I wanted. Everything checked out and it looked good to open. So I opened it up and people got on right away. Then I watched as the first car got to the turn and just flew right off the edge. I watched as, one by one, each of the cars flew off and exploded. It was a disturbing sight to see, and it still haunts me.

I have to agree with you on the fact that the graphics from the first two are more preferably. The controls for the first one keeps me from playing it. However, the options for the third one overrule my preference for the graphics on the first two. Do you still play them?

...that story sounds like it'd be pretty haunting. Did you check the launch speed? Sometimes slowing it down will prevent that from becoming an issue - and can also create the issue. I had that happen with one of the "Flying Turns" free coasters - probably the same one that you're talking about. The speed was too great and kept launching the cars off the track. But not in the demo. It annoyed me. I think the added weight of the people may factor in. (Though I would have never thought that weight was a factor at all.) Another one that got me was the Freefall rides. I upp'ed the speed to high - and the cart went right off the column!

I haven't played any of them in a while (a few months), but I still own all 3. The first one I have on GOG, the second I have the actual disc for, and the third one I bought on Steam. They're certainly fantastic to play when you're looking for something slow paced and relaxing to play, but I've been playing Civ V for that lately.

As for the roller coaster I crashed, it does sound like it was probably a Flying Turns coaster. But it definitely crashed because of the speed. I had a hill right before the turn to make it scarier. I'm not sure what would make it work when testing but not when people are on it, but it may just be a bug of some sort.

And I've exploded a few other coasters in my time while testing them. The freefall ride was definitely one of them.

The only thing that I can figure is having people added causes some sort of change. It's the only thing that made sense. Then again, if it's a programming glitch... it doesn't necessarily need to make sense. Oh well. Have any screenshots or videos?

Nope, I've never recorded myself playing a game. And I've only taken screenshots in a few games that I've played before. Roller coaster tycoon is not one of them.

soxfan849 : I find it a lot of fun to record and share the parks that I try to build. What did you think of the one that I was working on in the video? Think it could have possibly worked if I'd finished it?

Honestly, I have no idea. I was absolutely terrible at that game, and my parks failed regularly. But I had a lot of fun while it happened. And your park does look fairly nice, I bet it would've been possible to get it work.

I liked the theme park manager game myself rather than rollercoaster tycoon, i always managed to make a profit but sometimes the margins were low, maybe a couple hundred bucks a day. That made upgrading annoying. I didnt like the loans either because i never knew if i would be able to pay them back. i would end up taking loans to pay my loans.
Theme hospital wasn't bad either. Iv re-downloaed them both on ps3.

soxfan849 :

I think it could have been made to work too, but I didn't like the way it was turning out. Was going to re-do it and try something on RCT3 but I can't get the paths to divide like on RCT2 and the No Entry signs aren't working for me either. :/ (One way paths)

thenumberone :

I have not actually heard of either one of those. Are they both for the PS3 only? And yea, the profit margin for RCT is rather troublesome. It's always been annoying for me. That's why I tended to create "Sandbox" parks & scenarios.

On the update... got another copy of Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection and I've been fiddling around. So - here is another video for you guys to enjoy~

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4FsIZelx8I

You'll have to wait for it to finish uploading though. Should be ready to watch in about fifteen minutes.

Oh! Sweet. I thought I'd have to add it to my list of "Games to buy to try." I went ahead and bought the first one in the RGR. Will get around to trying it asap. (I'm on a roll here. Official Post Sydrome. XD)

For the others, I'll have to see if I can locate a copy of them for my PS2. (Since, thankfully, it runs PS1 discs and I have memory cards for it.)

I looooove Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 & 2. I haven't played the second one that much but I was a champion at the 1st one. I've had some pretty sweet parks too. I'd never thought to take a screen shot, though... which is ridiculous. I'm really stupid, apparently.

soxfan849 : Your being haunted by all of your patrons crashing to their fiery death is sad and hilarious. I had the same experience. I don't really like building the roller coasters because it seems tedious to me and I'd rather be doing other things, so I always just buy them or let Lazlo build them. The first time I built one, something stupid happened where it worked in the tests put when people got on it, the first car was going up this huge incline, but didn't make it and crashed back down into the car behind it that had just filled up with people. It was kind of just one of those moments where when I realized it was happening, I was just able to watch in amused shock and horror. I'M A MONSTER. WHAT HAVE I DONE.

Then there was another time with one of the little launch things where I made it super high and super fast and I was all excited and I forgot to test it, so it shot up and like 5 extensions higher than I had the rails and just hovered for a minute before plummeting back into the park in a fireball. I remember flailing comically chanting "Oh no oh no oh no!" because it seemed like it was in the air forever off the rails and I knew what was going to happen, hahah. That's was one of my most epic and successful parks too.

Oh that sounds like it would have been absolutely hilarious to watch! I bet Lazlo thought you were amusing as hell. Like one of those "Best Reactions to ____" videos on Youtube.
As far as the screenshots go, I wouldn't say that you were stupid for not taking them. It took me awhile to start taking them myself and only because I decided that I wanted to show them to my friends. So I started taking screenshots to show off. Then I wound up making slideshows and uploading them to Youtube. Just kind of chained after that. Now I have Fraps (registered) with intent to do entire videos as well as possibly doing an "LP."
Now, the Coasters? I'm not a big fan of building them either but I consider it a challenge - and I do want to eventually make a park where all the rides in it are completely custom (if they can be). Like the "Ultimate challenge of RCT!" type thing. I don't know. POssibly start doing competitions?

Anyhow.. yea, so. And I had that sort of amused shock/horror reaction when I was doing a flying turns coaster that kept flying. (Go whee people! This will be the last ride of your life!) And then again when I had a park where the people just kept dying and I could not figure out why. Turns out that when I did the "Exit" for one of the Rowing Boats rides, a piece of the path never got laid out/got deleted and I didn't notice. So they'd get on the ride and then when they got off, they'd die.

Then I just watched thousands of peeps drown to death in the water because I was so shocked by the issue. (LOL!)

thenumberone :

Got it. I'm surprised that it's not in the RGR if it is in so many other places, though. (Well, nevermind that... large file probably since it's a disc-based game.) Thank you for the suggestions and I will try them ASAP.

I really like RCT3. It made the wait for summers and amusement park trips less torturing. I got to control every thing, I even got to have a virtual ride on my amazing roller coaster creations. Then I got into game console collecting which is where I'm at now, and my computer apparently quit reading discs. So now I await to play the game again, someday my computer might be replaced or fixed but currently it does not read discs sadly :'(

G@mehe@d :

You could always get downloadable versions, instead of discs. I'm trying to switch mine to downloads so that I don't have so many discs that I need to carry with. (lol...) And RCT3 is great for getting the thrill of the amusement park at your fingertips :3

The game I miss playing is the Theme park sim game called Sims Theme Park.  Although if you can get RCT on here imagine all the other wonderful games you could put on here! Of course once you bring one Computer game on here then you might as well bring them all on here.   I wonder if there is a site dedicated to older Computer games like that?

Deadman9001 :

I doubt it. That would take a huge, huge amount of bandwidth. On top of that, PC games are a helluva a lot more protected because they're newer and most have sequels, pre-quels, etc. So, you'll be waiting awhile before the chance that one can even pop up. I think.
