Decathlon was released in 1983 by Activision for the Atari 2600. The game is not bad, but it lacks detail and sound. It's just one of those Olympic button tapping games. This game is unique however, instead of using the single button on the joystick or the keyboard if your playing on an emulator. You use the arrow keys or the handle on the joystick to make the people run. This leads to confusing controls, because you might think that since your using arrows as the running buttons you'll think that the up button is the button you use to jump. Actually it's the fire button or the spacebar. Lets take a closer look at this title.

GRAPHICS: The game needs detail, A LOT OF DETAIL. It seems like your guy is the only person there. There is no detail in the stadium just a track, a green field and seats for the spectators. Which have a few spectators in them but they don't even look like living things. However your contestant is smoothly animated during the events. Which is just your guy by him self. No competition at all. The only way to get some competition is to play with up to 3 other players. That's right up to 4 players can play this game. This is done by each person taking turns after every event.

SOUND: The sound is fairly good. There is a little song in the beginning and in the end, but the game lacks sound during the events. Just a few beeps that don't even sound different. Pitfall 2 was released on that same year, and it had a song that played until you beat the game. So there's no excuse that the technology wasn't there.

ADDICTIVENESS: Despite the mediocre graphics and sound. The is very addicting, since there is a ton of events to chose from you will be busy for a while.

DEPTH: The game has a lot to do. There are 10 different events plus the Decathlon which is a major competition which is best played with other people, the Decathlon is just a event that combines all the events for a huge competition. I did mention you can play with 3 other player which is quite innovative for an Atari 2600 title.

DIFFICULTY: The game is extremely easy because you can't compete with other computer players. The only reason why this is a little difficult is because it might take a little more time to get used to the controls then normal.

OVERALL RATING 8.3
The game is a great party game and it has a lot to do. However the mediocre graphics and sound might make this game a little unexciting.
