Source: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/plague-confirmed-man-save-mouse-16577682#.T-gwMxee4bA

So, in a summary of the event, an Oregon man was bitten by a stray cat while trying to take a dead mouse out of its mouth and got the bubonic plague.

For you history folk, you already know what this is. For those who don't know, this is the plague that killed over a third of the population of Europe.

When you really think about it, this is some pretty scary news, considering the fact that this incident could be a red flag signaling that this could be starting over again.

So, what are your thoughts on this subject, Nya~.

Hey Kitty how are you? hey whats in your mouth? Is that a... Mouse!? Well let me get it out of your mouth.... Ouch!! Meow. 5 Days later. Bubonic Plague has stricken from a cat.... how sad. That really stinks and since it was just a normal cat it's kinda scary so I wouldn't want to pet any random cat or a cat from somebody else's house.

Yea i mean that is scary because it was in oregon, within the U.S. Last case i seen reported was in Mexico, these american hickers contracted it but lived through the ordeal. I always thought the plague was gone and over with but it just shows that it doesn't just "go away". Scary stuff.

Well the plaque comes from rats. So the cat got it from catching rats. Sad because cats are meant to catch rats... Makes me wonder about my cats we have them to catch rats in and outside our home.

These diseases spread when people don't take care of themselves and are careless around wild animals such as stray pet like animals, rodents, and bugs.

If you suspect you live in an area of great disease do not use cats/dogs to catch the bugs or rodents use traps or poisons. Just make sure that you don't have children around and if you do contact an exterminator. Keep your house clean at all time that means every day sweep and mop the floors and clean down the counters using bleach. This will minimize the likely hood of attracting bugs and rodents.

Not that surprising with the amount of world trade. The Bubonic Plague is actually endemic in places like India (it's like chicken pox there)... it devastated Europe because there were no resistances to it at all. Kinda like what smallpox did to the Native Americans when the colonists and explorers arrived.

Elara :
the fact that there was not drinking water, (people drank beer instead), houses didn't have windows because they were taxed, family's lived in 1 room, and they ate nothing but cheap vegetables, didnt help either, since they had literally no immune system.
Although ironically, the plague actually benefited europeans afterwards, it meant that the remainng peasants couldnt be treated like slaves, the wealthy needed there labour too much so they got real wages.

Untill the industrial revolution.

MegaRevolution1 : Yeah I know as I was saying it could be any rat. So if one of my Dad's cats caught a rat and it had the disease and I came over to my Dad's house and it got angry and it bit me and I got the Disease that would stink and it could happen to anybody. Of course they have cures for it now.

It's not just carried in the rats, it's spread due to their fleas.

The thing about the plague is that there's now treatment available for it in the form of antibiotics, so there's little chance it could kill a large number of people due to the health care infrastructure in Canada & the US. xD I thought this was obvious.

According to the Wiki page, if you get antibiotics within 24 hours of showing symptoms, you'll likely survive.

Quite some cryptic stuff there. He did save that mouse from that cat, for what reason, it must be a mouse lover, and gets disease'd from it. That's a shame.

If you start feeling masses in your armpits, seek medical help immediately. But I don't think this will be another outbreak of the Plague, just an isolated incident.

MegaRevolution1 : Actually the "Plague" has never left. This isn't a sign of anything since there are about 10 cases of Bubonic Plague reported every year. It is nothing but a bacteria infection that affects lymph nodes.

I'm not afraid of the black death coming back, Modern day science has proven that the spread of the black death can be prevented just by washing your hands and being sanitary.. That and they probably killed off all the host and carriers of the virus by now.

It is more likely this guy contracted the disease from getting blood from the mouse into the wound from the cat bite. While cats CAN pass on the plague to humans, it is an extremely rare occurrence. In fact, cats do more to halt the spread of the plague than anything. By killing the infected rats, they help decrease instances of humans coming in contact with said rats or their fleas, which could also pass on the disease.

The sad truth about the Bubonic Plague is that humans brought it on themselves during the Dark Ages. By foolishly buying into sill superstitions like 'cats are evil demon spawn that enjoy the company of witches' and subsequently killing off most of the feline population in Europe, they allowed rats to proliferate and spread this horrible disease. Call it god smack if you will, but this is what will always happen when people give in to irrational fears and do things that disturb the delicate balance that exists on this planet.

Isn't there a 'cure' for the bubonic plague now? If someone gets it today, they can just take medicine for it to go away before it gets bad and spreads, I believe.

That's the only reason it killed off 1/3rd of the population of Europe; they didn't have antibiotics yet.

People can still die from the bubonic plague, but the death rate is much, much lower.

Well I know I posted a rant in the apocalypse discussion a few days ago saying that there was no way that the human race was going to die out any time soon, but things like this make me second guess myself. The real problem is when everyone panics and thinks that the plague is going to kill the world. Then they get health departments to start giving off vaccines that kill more people than the disease itself, and people try to leave populated cities out of fear, only spreading the problem..... Yeah, we've seen stuff like this before. Look up the Mad Cow Disease that started in Europe. Officials believed that hundreds of thousands would die, but the actual result was 176. Don't get me wrong, 176 deaths is nothing to sneeze at (actually quite tragic), but it is also nothing to cause sheer panic over. But I tell you, bubonic plague...  that's bad news.

Izziah : As I understand, the main reason why it was so devastating and common at that period of time was because they didn't have proper cleaning methods back then, basically living in filth, which had resulted in the catastrophic number in deaths. Although, taking a little bath definitely won't help you when it was contracted through a bite from an animal, definitely, Nya~.
It is true that people freak out way too early. Indeed, the mass chaos and fear of dying strikes more deaths than the actual disease itself. In fact, during a pandemic outbreak such as this, the panic can cause more fatal accidents through human flaws (Such as being trampled trying to escape a crowd rushing from a condemned area/person) rather than the disease itself, really. It's sad, honestly, that we have nobody but ourselves to blame for why such avoidable deaths and accidents happen other than ourselves, Nya~.
