Here's a news story I found-

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2012/06/11/middleboro-town-meeting-to-vote-on-20-fine-for-swearing/

What do you think?

I think it's kinda dumb and it will be a pain to enforce. All someone needs to do is say they don't have an ID with them and they can't do anything. It's not criminal, so they can't justify arrest (or anything that would let them search you). It just won't work.

Well, f#@#! I'd be s*&$ outta money by the end of the week.

This is a dumb law honestly. The kind of thing put into effect by old grandmas. Either way, it's not like they could ever apply a law like this to a larger city. Rascally kids would just cuss at the top of their lungs and run away, just to push buttons.

Yeah that is a stupid law. I mean, who are they to take away the rights of being able to talk however you like? If people don't like it, then they can more or go elsewhere.

MASSIVE EDIT :
Right, as far as I'm aware, there is already measures in place to deal with inappropriate behaviour, so picking out this tiny aspect of that is pointless.
There has been nothing stopping people dealing with this before, so why now?

Did the law come first? Are we incapable from dealing stuff like this properly?
Anyway, there isn't a issue, so this "fining people" thing is just another excuse to get some easy cash.

Doesn't this encourage teenagers to do it to test the law ?

Ah, it doesn't really matter. I can't wait for the day when rebel fighters start to do bombings to cigarette factories to hopes of banning smoking.

This is pretty stupid, but I hope the people of Middleborough see it as an opportunity to get creative and take "legal" words to come up with extremely offensive things to shout in public.

MegaRevolution1 : The law is only for speech in public places like parks, it does not infringe on freedom of speech as it does not stop people from speaking such words in their homes and whatnot. Freedom of speech does not mean you can say anything without consequences. Obviously you cannot shout "Fire!" in a movie theater if there is no fire in the first place. Likewise, this law is only to stop the use of profanity in public places. Not everyone wants to hear someone curse like a sailor, and I personally wouldn't want my kids (when I have kids that is) to learn such words until I think they are old enough to understand what is profanity and why they shouldn't use it.

I am optimistic about this law, though I can understand if it is challenging to enforce for the first few weeks. We will just have to wait and see what happens.

That's (Messed) up, they think they can (freaking) change whatever the (Heck) they want with (dang) laws! It's not even constitutional This is a public place can they [The government] change what we say and still get away with it? The bill of Rights stands in they're way as an impediment.Okay I understand they are thinking about children but still, violation of freedom of speech..... (I did the parenthesis at the start of this to prove a point,) I think I've rested my case

I do not swear but I do think this is a stupid law. Plus a person can contest the fine in court and the police probably would not have evidence against the person in question. I highly doubt this law will work. It also goes against our rights of free speech and that also covers public places unless it causes a fight.

AuraBlaze :

So if the government outlawed public prayer it would be alright, since you could still pray in your home?

And the reason you can't shout fire in a public building is that it puts people's lives in danger. To quote the Supreme Court: "The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic … . The question in every case is whether the words used are used in such circumstances and are of such a nature as to create a clear and present danger." Swearing in public causes no such danger.

I don't mind the law personally. I'd prefer if there was some sort of restriction on certain language in public. I'm tired of coming across a group of people who feel the need (or right) to swear as much as they want. I'm okay with that.

The real problem I see is enforcement. Unless a cop hears you swear there is almost no way to enforce this law making it pretty pointless.

The fun part will be when people challenge the fine in court. I'd love to see a group of people go out and swear subtly to get tickets then challenge them in court. That would be a fun day for the judge.

soxfan849 : This discussion has nothing to do with public prayer. The use of profanity is fined only on public property; anyone can swear until their lungs bleed when they are on private property. I should not have to be forced to keep my children in my house 24/7 to avoid exposing them to profanity, I want to be able to take them to the park. Yes, I would not be able to keep them away from it forever, but I would want to teach them why it is called offensive language in the first place; it offends people; it offends me.

If you are cussing so loud a cop can hear you then you probably have serious anger issues and should be arrested on the spot for noise disturbance. Most the people who are likely to cuss at at a high volume are either drunk or mentally unstable anyway. Freedom of speech is one thing, freedom to be a douchebag and not respect other peoples peace is another. That is where the misconception is with this law.

AuraBlaze :

Except that public prayer is a form of speech. And there are those who would want to restrict it to only private property. That's not a good thing and it would be infringing on our rights. My point was to illustrate, using speech that you would definitely not want taken away, that just because you can say it at home does not mean your rights have not been taken away. Freedom of speech includes what we have a right to say in public.

And I'd like to see you explain why profanity offends you in another thread. It's never made any sense to me that anyone could be offended by the words a person uses, instead of the message that they try to convey.

Freedom of speech is not the same thing as freedom of assembly, freedom to petition the government, nor is it the same as freedom of religion. Fining people for saying specific four-letter words, in public places like parks where children play, that make other people uncomfortable, is not an infringement of rights. Also, despite the fact that JigSaw himself used some profanity, he is right. You have a right to free speech, but you have to be respectful to other people as well.

I read that, and that is just wrong. I mean, not only is there the fact of freedom of speech, but do you know how many people are going to curse? That's a whole bunch of court fees, just to pay a $20 dollar fine. And what if it's a 5 year old? You going to give them a ticket too? IF a student curses in class, you going to call the SRO into the classroom to write the student a ticket? I mean, come on now. That is just stupid. Give me a break.

I saw that story awhile back and I think it's stupid. Censorship of any kind is stupid. Honestly if people get offended by a simple word (Not a direct attack on you) then those people need to lighten up

Okay, this isn't very logical. I thought one of the good things about living in the USA is the right of free speech! There's no way they can enforce this. Too bad for people in Boston.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
